There are many reasons why you may be considering surgery - to resolve a long-standing health problem, to look younger or to give your confidence a much-needed boost after a major life change, such as giving birth or extreme weight loss.

Whatever your reason, it is vital that you choose a surgeon who is qualified and experienced to ensure the very best results. A good surgeon is open and honest about what can be achieved via surgery and what side effects to expect.

Here are seven questions to ask your surgeon at your consultation.

How many of these procedures have you done?

This will help to determine whether the surgeon has experience in this specific procedure.

What qualifications and training do you have?

Check if the surgeon is a member of a relevant professional association that shows they meet set standards in training and skill.

What pain can I expect afterwards?

This will also help with expectations in regards to post-surgery pain management.

How long should recovery be?

The surgeon should cover how long you need off work and how long to wait before having sex and resuming exercise.

What are the most common complications of the procedure?

It is very important that you know what to look out for and how and where to get help if needed.

What aftercare can I expect and who will look after you?

Caring for the surgical sites is important to ensure the best results. The surgeon should be able to tell you how to do this, who you can contact with questions and when you will need to return for a follow-up.

How long will my results last?

It’s important to clarify whether the results are permanent or not and how these results can be maintained.

What can I expect to look like after the procedure?

A surgeon should be able to offer realistic expectations as to the final result.
