What is Weight Loss Medication?

Weight Loss Medication is a range of prescription-only treatments which can be used to help patients lose weight.

They are often recommended for patients who:

  • Are affected by a weight-related medical condition, such as Type II Diabetes
  • Have struggled to lose weight through methods such as diet management and exercise alone
  • Meet certain weight and BMI criteria, depending on the type of medication and their medical history

For many patients, Weight Loss Medication is a vital tool to aid their weight loss progress. As well as being connected with many related health conditions, stubborn weight gain can dramatically affect an individual’s confidence and quality of life, including how they dress and their physical comfort.

Interest in Weight Loss Medication has dramatically increased over the last few years. Although the convenience of online options can be appealing, it is essential that patients taking Weight Loss Medication are properly supervised by an experienced medical professional for their safety and also to ensure they achieve their goals.

Cadogan Clinic’s specialist consultants are all experts in their field and are committed to patient safety and outcomes.

What Weight Loss Medication Options Are Available?

There are several prescription Weight Loss Medications available, depending on your personal requirements and eligibility. Your specialist consultant will discuss your concerns and reasons for considering Weight Loss Medication in your initial consultation before offering you the best Weight Loss Medication for your concerns and needs.

The most recognisable Weight Loss Medication, GLP-1 Receptor Agonists, are injectable treatments. There are a few different types, based on different active ingredients; however, they work in a similar way.

Semaglutide

Medication Names

  • Wegovy
  • Ozempic
  • Rybelsus

Semaglutide Eligibility

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance suggests the following criteria for patients seeking Semaglutide treatment:

  • BMI of 35 or over, with at least one weight-related health condition
  • Patients who have a BMI below 35 may be eligible if they have been selected for specialist weight management services
  • Lower thresholds apply for patients of South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean backgrounds

How does Semaglutide work?

Semaglutide medications work by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1. This has several effects on the body:

  • Stimulates the release of insulin after eating to lower blood sugar
  • Prevents the liver from releasing glucagon and raising blood sugar
  • Slows down the speed which food moves through the stomach
  • Supresses your appetite by acting on the area of your brain which controls how hungry you feel

How is Semaglutide administered?

Semaglutide is given as a self-administered weekly injection, and courses usually last for up to two years. During this time, you will be supervised by a weight loss specialist who will monitor your progress, health, diet and exercise to ensure your safety and that you are meeting your goals.

Semaglutide availability

Of the three types of Semaglutide medication, only Wegovy is licensed as a Weight Loss Medication. Both Ozempic and Rybelus are primarily treatments for Type II Diabetes, and their availability has been affected by the increase in off-license prescribing for weight loss.

Medication manufacturers have been working to ensure that suitable levels of all of these drugs are maintained for their intended purposes. You may find that your specialist recommends an alternative option, which means your access is less likely to be disrupted.

Liraglutide

Medication Names

  • Saxenda

Saxenda Eligibility

NICE guidance for Liraglutide eligibility includes the following criteria

  • BMI of 35 or over with no Prediabetes and a high risk of cardiovascular concerns

How does Liraglutide work

Liraglutide works in the same way as Semaglutide, mimicking the GLP-1 hormone to:

  • Reduce blood sugar levels
  • Suppress your appetite

Keep you feeling full for longer

However, randomised studies have shown that Liraglutide is slightly less effective for managing blood sugar levels than Semaglutide, hence the risk of Type II Diabetes plays a key part in the eligibility guidance.

How is Liraglutide administered?

Liraglutide is a self-administered daily injection. You will be carefully monitored, and if you haven’t lost at least 5% of your initial body weight in the first 12 weeks of treatment, you may be moved on to a different Weight Loss Medication. If Liraglutide is successful for you, treatment can be continued for up to two years for most patients.

Very similar to GLP-1 Agonists, Dual GIP/GLP-1 Agonists are another popular and recognisable injectable Weight Loss Medication.

Tirzepatide

Medication Names

  • Mounjaro

Mounjaro Eligibility

Under the NICE guidelines, patients are considered suitable for Mounjaro treatment if they meet the following criteria:

  • BMI of 35 or over with at least one weight-related health condition

Under the NHS, eligibility criteria differ slightly, requiring patients to have a BMI of 40 or over, along with four or more weight-related health conditions.

How does Mounjaro work?

As well as GLP-1, Mounjaro also mimics the effects of the hormone GIP. This controls blood sugar and suppresses appetite, similar to Semaglutide and Liraglutide medications, but some studies suggest that the effect is strengthened as two hormones are being mimicked rather than just one.

How is Mounjaro administered?

Mounjaro is a self-administered injection which is taken one a week. A medical professional will monitor your progress, dosage and health while you are taking Mounjaro, to ensure you are meeting your weight loss goals, and that side effects aren’t impacting you.

Orlistat is an alternative Weight Loss Medication which is taken orally as a tablet, instead of being an injection.

Medication Names

  • Xenical
  • Alli

Orlistat Eligibility

Patients who are considering Orlistat medication should be aware of the following eligibility criteria:

  • BMI of 30 or over
  • BMI of 28 or over if additional risk factors are present, such as Type II Diabetes

How does Orlistat work?

Orlistat is a lipase inhibitor which prevents around a third of the fat from the food you eat from being absorbed. When paired with a controlled diet, this can help to avoid further weight gain and may also help patients to lose weight.

How is Orlistat administered?

Orlistat is a tablet, which is taken up to three times a day either with liquids during a meal, or up to an hour after eating. It is also important that the amount of fat you eat while you are taking Orlistat is reduced. A medical professional will monitor your progress and health while you are taking Orlistat to ensure you are healthy and meeting your goals.

Words from our clients:

Why Do People Take Weight Loss Medication?

There are several reasons why an increasing number of people are considering Weight Loss Medication:

  • Stubborn weight gain: For patients who have found that they haven’t been able to lose weight through diet and exercise alone, Weight Loss Medication can be a valuable tool to progress their weight loss journey.
  • Weight-related health conditions: Patients who are affected by weight-related conditions such as Type II Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease, Sleep Apnoea, and Osteoarthritis may find there is an improvement in their overall health as well as a decrease in their weight thanks to Weight Loss Medication. Especially in cases of Type II Diabetes, GIP and GLP-1 Agonists are formulated to balance blood sugar levels as well as tackle weight gain.
  • Surgery preparation: In cases where a patient has been asked to meet a certain weight requirement for the safety of a surgical procedure, Weight Loss Medication may be an option to help them achieve this.
  • Eligibility or referral: Many patients who meet the eligibility requirements for Weight Loss Medication, or who have been referred to specialist services by a doctor, may find that prescription treatments help them to lose more weight than they would be able to through other methods.

Your consultant will discuss why you are interested in taking Weight Loss Medication during your consultation, so it is important to consider your reasons ahead of your appointment.

Who is Suitable for Weight Loss Medication?

The eligibility guidelines for Weight Loss Medication are purposefully kept strict to ensure that availability isn’t affected and that certain risks and benefits are carefully balanced for patient safety.

Although the eligibility for each type of medication varies, the factors that your consultant will consider to determine whether you are suitable for Weight Loss Medication include:

  • Your BMI: Most Weight Loss Medications are most beneficial to patients whose BMI is 35 or over. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight (kg) by your height squared (metres); however, other factors such as your ethnicity, muscle mass and fat distribution can affect the figure.
  • Medical history: Patients who are either affected by or at higher risk of conditions such as Type II Diabetes, Hypertension, Cardiovascular Disease, or Sleep Apnoea may benefit from Weight Loss Medication, as losing weight may also improve their overall health.
  • Other weight loss methods: Your consultant will consider whether you have tried any other weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, and how effective these were.
  • Your ethnicity: Patients from South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African Caribbean backgrounds may have different eligibility as they may be at higher risk of weight-related health conditions, which Weight Loss Medication may help to manage.

If your consultant decides that you are suitable for Weight Loss Medication, they will discuss the costs and treatment plan, as well as how often you will need to be seen for follow-up appointments. They may also refer you to a Dietitian who will work alongside your consultant during your treatment plan.

Mr. Bryan Mayou

Frequently Asked Questions

Weight Loss Medication is a safe and effective way to lose stubborn weight which has been resistant to other weight loss options such as diet and exercise.

There is a strict list of eligibility criteria for all Weight Loss Medication which ensures there is a careful balance between any potential risks and the overall benefits of weight loss drugs.

To ensure optimal patient safety, it is crucial that patients are supervised thoroughly throughout treatment to protect their health.

Weight Loss Medication does have some associated side effects, which it is important to understand and discuss with your consultant. As well as the examples given below, there may be others which are drug-specific, or connected to your personal medical history.

  • Gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Inflammation of the pancreas
  • Gallbladder issues
  • Hair thinning
  • Depression
  • Loose skin (sometimes known as Ozempic Face or Ozempic Butt)

The length of time it takes for Mounjaro to work depends on your initial weight. The progress of all weight loss drugs is measured in percentages. When taking Mounjaro you can expect to lose:

  • Around 6% of your initial body weight after two months
  • Around 9% of your initial body weight after three months
  • Around 11% of your initial body weight after four months
  • Around 21% of your initial body weight after eighteen months

This will differ for every patient, and your consultant will discuss the results you can expect in your consultation.

Mounjaro first became available on the NHS in 2025. The eligibility criteria for getting Mounjaro on the NHS are stricter than the NICE guidelines in order to make it available to patients in the most serious need. To get Mounjaro on the NHS, patients must have a BMI of 40 or over (37.5 or over for certain ethnic backgrounds) and also have at least four weight-related health conditions.

Mounjaro and Ozempic are both weight loss injections which work by mimicking digestive hormones to control blood sugar and suppress appetite.

Ozempic was originally developed as a treatment for Type II Diabetes, and only mimics the GLP-1 hormone. The Mounjaro injection was developed as a weight loss drug and mimics both GLP-1 and GIP hormones, meaning it may be more effective for patients who wish to lose weight.

Wegovy and Ozempic are both semaglutide weight loss drugs, but are licensed for different uses.

Whereas Ozempic is licensed primarily for treating Type II Diabetes (but can be prescribed for weight loss), Wegovy is licensed for weight loss.

Some studies have found that Mounjaro may be the most effective option of the weight loss injections. This is because it mimics two digestive hormones, GIP and GLP-1, which increase its ability to suppress the appetite and control blood sugar. Wegovy only mimics one of these hormones, GLP-1. It is important to note that Wegovy has been shown to be highly effective in weight loss, but for some patients Mounjaro may be the better option.

If you think you may be eligible for Weight Loss Medication and you are interested in discussing whether it may be beneficial for you, speaking to a specialist consultant is the best way to establish if you qualify. Get in touch with our dedicated patient advisors who can further discuss your concerns and organise your initial consultation.
