What are Private GP Services?

Private GP Services offer treatment from General Practitioners (GPs) outside of the NHS.

General Practitioners offer primary care and are often the first point of contact when patients have concerns about their own or their family’s health. They are trained in a wide range of general health concerns, and are able to provide treatment, or develop a treatment plan with you to ensure you receive the care you need.

GP Services are usually based within the community, meaning they often form strong relationships with people and their families. They will support their patients through many life milestones making them important figures within the community and people’s lives.

Cadogan Clinic’s GP Services are also available to anyone who is travelling and needs to seek care away from home. This can often provide reassurance and peace of mind to those experiencing health concerns in an unfamiliar place.

Which Private GP Services are available at Cadogan Clinic?

Cadogan Clinic has a comprehensive Private GP Service available from our award-winning clinic based in Chelsea, London. Patients can choose to see a Private GP to discuss any of their primary health concerns and establish the best treatment options.

General Practitioners are qualified to provide care and treatment for a wide range of physical, psychological and social concerns, rather than specialising in a specific area.

Primary health concerns that our Private GPs see and treat regularly include:

Common acute illnesses

  • Colds
  • Flu
  • Infections, such as Ear Infections or UTIs
  • Tonsilitis
  • Appendicitis
  • Gastrointestinal illnesses

Chronic illnesses

Musculoskeletal conditions

  • Tendonitis

Your GP may be able to offer immediate treatment and support for your condition, or they may need to refer you for further tests or treatment with a specialist consultant. In cases of chronic health conditions, they may work with other medical professionals to execute your treatment plan.

General Practitioners are often central to family healthcare. They are often one of the first medical professionals women speak to when they first find out they are pregnant, and will continue to provide care throughout pregnancy and after childbirth and into adulthood.

This strong relationship between GPs and their patients is crucial, as often they will have the strongest knowledge of their patients’ medical history.

  • Pregnancy including any required vaccinations
  • General check-ups
  • Common childhood illnesses
  • Developmental conditions
  • Mental health concerns
  • Family wellbeing support

There are a number of vaccinations that children in the UK are recommended to have to prevent several diseases and protect their health.

As well as the UK Childhood Vaccination Programmes, Cadogan Clinic’s GPs are fully trained in the American and European Vaccination Programmes for children, ensuring your children are fully protected wherever they may travel.

Childhood Vaccinations in the UK include:

  • 6-in-1 vaccine – Protection against Diphtheria, Hepatitis B, Hib, Polio, Tetanus and Whooping Cough
  • Rotavirus vaccine – Preventing against Rotavirus, a common cause of diarrhoea and vomiting
  • MenB vaccine – Helps to protect against Meningococcal Group B bacteria which can cause Meningitis and Sepsis
  • Pneumococcal vaccine – Preventing Pneumonia, Sepsis and Meningitis as well as Sinusitis and Ear Infections
  • MMR vaccine – Protection against Mumps, Measles and Rubella
  • 4-in-1 pre-school booster – Provides extra protection against Diphtheria, Polio, Tetanus and Whooping Cough
  • HPV vaccine – Protects against the Human Papillomavirus, which is connected to certain cancers
  • 3-in-1 teenage booster – Further protection against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Polio
  • MenACWY vaccine – Additional protection from Meningitis and Sepsis

Your GP will be able to advise on when each vaccination should be administered and if multiple doses, or boosters, are required at any stage. It is also recommended that you are up to date with your vaccinations before you go to university.

There is a series of vaccinations which are recommended for adults for different reasons. It is important to speak to your GP about whether these may apply to you and the best time to get them for maximum protection.

  • Flu vaccine – Given annually to anyone aged 65 and over and to pregnant women during flu season
  • Pneumococcal vaccine – One dose at the age of 65
  • Shingles vaccine – Two doses to anyone aged 65 and over
  • RSV vaccine – One dose for anyone aged 75-79, or for women who are at least 28 weeks into their pregnancy
  • COVID-19 vaccine – Given to anyone aged 75 or over annually
  • Whooping cough vaccine – For any woman at least 20 weeks pregnant

There are also some vaccinations which are recommended to younger adults if they have a weakened immune system or other underlying conditions.

When travelling to certain countries, there are recommended vaccinations, and some countries may ask for proof of vaccination to travel there. It is important to prepare in advance, as you may need the vaccination a few weeks before you travel to maximise protection.

The vaccinations you require will vary depending on the country you are visiting, and the activities you are taking part in or the environments you may be exposed to. Cadogan Clinic’s GPs are all trained in the latest travel vaccination advice and will be able to provide any paperwork you need alongside your treatment.

  • Polio
  • Typhoid
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Cholera
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Tick-borne Encephalitis
  • Meningitis
  • Rabies
  • Tuberculosis
  • Yellow Fever

You may also require a course of medication to prevent Malaria. There are several treatment options, and it is essential to discuss your travel plans and medical history with your GP to establish the best one to meet your needs.

Over the last few years, there has been an increasing interest in prescription Weight Loss Medication to help those struggling with stubborn weight gain. While there are many benefits to these medications, for losing weight and improving weight-related health concerns, it is essential that their prescription and treatment are managed and supervised by a qualified medical professional.

Most weight loss medications work by reducing appetite or blocking the absorption of some dietary fats.

Cadogan Clinic’s GPs are trained and highly experienced in administering weight-loss medication treatment plans. They will discuss your concerns and requirements to establish the right medication for your needs:

  • Semaglutide – Available as Wegovy, Ozempic
  • Liraglutide - Available as Saxenda
  • Tirzepatide – Available as Mounjaro
  • Orlistat – Available as Xenical

Where appropriate, your GP may recommend that you speak with a Dietitian alongside your weight loss medication to enhance your treatment.

Regular health screening is an effective way of identifying existing health conditions and increased risk of health conditions in individuals, even if they appear healthy. There are several reasons people choose to undergo health screening:

  • General health assessment
  • Achieving and maintaining fitness goals
  • Preparing for a surgical procedure
  • Monitoring health risks
  • Detecting potential health concerns early, before symptoms appear
  • Gaining personalised insights about health and wellbeing

Many patients consider that investment in preventative screening is more cost-effective than having to treat complications from untreated illnesses later in life.

Health screening is designed to be bespoke to you, based on your concerns and requirements. Cadogan Clinic’s Private GPs will put together the right series of tests to give you the best insight into your health.

  • Blood tests
  • Blood pressure
  • ECG test
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Body fat percentage
  • Urine tests
  • Lung function
  • Targeted cancer screening
  • Lifestyle assessment

Your GP may perform some of these tests themselves or refer you to a specialist if they feel it is necessary. Pathology tests will be taken at the clinic and sent to our partner lab to be analysed. Once your results have been returned, your GP will compile your results to create a personalised report, allowing you to fully understand your results.

If you require any further tests or treatment, your GP will guide you on the best approach and support you to get the correct care.

Our General Practitioners are experienced in offering dedicated Men’s Healthcare services and provide a range of medical screening and treatment options.

  • Prostate screening
  • Testicular screening
  • Men’s fertility advice

If required, our GPs may refer to our dedicated in-house Urology Consultants for further care and treatment.

Our Women’s Wellness Service provides medical screening and care for specific female concerns. Our GPs are fully qualified to perform a range of screenings and tests relating to women’s health, as well as offering advice and support.

  • Cervical screening
  • Breast examinations
  • Women’s fertility advice
  • Menopause care, including HRT
  • Coil Removal

Our Women’s Wellness services can be made bespoke to your needs, depending on your age, concerns and medical history.

Working closely with our team of Consultant Dermatologists, our GPs are able to examine, treat and manage a range of skin concerns and conditions.

Where appropriate, our GPs may refer you for further treatment with a specialist Consultant Dermatologist, in-house.

For patient convenience and an extra level of discretion, Cadogan Clinic’s GPs are pleased to offer House Visits for our patients.

This allows you to be seen in the comfort of your own home to discuss your health concerns and, in many cases, begin your treatment.

To organise a House Visit, please get in touch with our specialist patient advisors who will be happy to discuss availability and assist.

Frequently Asked Questions

People often want to know if a Private GP can refer to NHS services. In the UK, private and NHS medical services are separate, and a Private GP cannot typically refer to the NHS. If your Private GP feels you need to see another medical specialist to discuss your concern further, they can refer you to a Private Consultant, or you can choose to speak to your NHS GP about being referred to an NHS Consultant.

No, at Cadogan Clinic, patients can self-refer for all of our services, including our Private GPs. In some cases, patients may require GP approval ahead of a surgical procedure.  However, as part of our dedication to integrated care, it is often possible to see one of our Private GPs for a pre-surgery assessment.

If you would like to organise a Private GP consultation at Cadogan Clinic, please get in touch with our dedicated patient advisor team for more information on availability and pricing.

In the UK, Private and NHS healthcare are managed separately. Therefore, your Private GP cannot access your NHS records and vice versa. If you have relevant information about your health concerns in your NHS records for your Private GP, you will need to request this yourself. Similarly, if you seek care from a Private GP and then return to the NHS for further treatment, it is important to obtain copies of your records to pass this information on.

Private GPs can provide prescriptions in precisely the same way as an NHS GP. However, it is essential to consider that there may be an additional cost for any medication which you will pay to the pharmacy.

A Private GP consultation at Cadogan Clinic starts from £250.00. Your GP will discuss the cost of any treatments or prescriptions during your appointment so you understand the total cost.
