Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery is often associated with a curvier frame and many patients feel they require a significant level of fat to transfer from their body to the buttocks. For those with a slimmer build BBL may not appear to be a suitable choice to enhance the contours of the body and add volume to the buttocks, however Skinny BBL is a variation on the original Brazilian Butt Lift surgery, which allows those with less fat available, to achieve natural and flattering results.

For many patients being skinny goes against current trends. Bodies come in every shape and size and there is nothing wrong with having a lower BMI. However, some people do feel self-conscious about being skinny and desire a curvier frame. What is a Skinny BBL?

The original Brazilian Butt Lift involves using Liposuction to remove excess fat from areas of the body such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and hips, before it is treated and injected into the buttocks to increase volume and lift. This results in larger buttocks, but also a contoured (snatched) waist and an enhanced, even curve to the thighs and hips. Many slimmer patients are intimidated by the apparent need for large quantities of fat and assume that this procedure cannot be adapted to suit a petite frame.

Skinny BBL is a variation of the BBL procedure to allow for an increase in volume and lift to the buttock area, as well as enhancing the waist and contours of the hips and thighs but with smaller amounts of fat. The results are often more subtle; however this tends to be more suited to a slimmer frame and allows for a more natural, flattering result for thin patients. Although this procedure has been adjusted to suit a slim frame, your surgeon will still require a certain amount of fat to transfer and make the procedure successful. As part of your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the Skinny BBL weight requirements and may ask you to gain some weight to achieve the best results.

What’s the difference between a regular BBL and Skinny BBL?

The main difference between a regular BBL and Skinny BBL is the quantity of fat that is extracted and injected into the buttocks. Skinny BBL if offered to patients with a thin frame and therefore naturally less fat. Slimmer patients also are less suited to the dramatic results of a regular BBL as it would create an unbalanced appearance. Your surgeon will use the smaller amounts of fat available to create a subtle increase in the size of the buttocks, whilst also injecting fat into the surrounding areas to enhance and create curves which a slimmer frame may not have naturally. Although your surgeon is working with less fat, they are still able to create your desired results. To achieve this, you may need to undergo multiple procedures a few months apart to allow for an increase in the volume and shape on each occasion.

What are the benefits?

Many slim patients are self-conscious about their frame, and feel uncomfortable wearing certain clothing or taking part in activities where they may have to reveal their body such as swimming. This may also affect intimate relationships. Skinny BBL will help to tackle this loss of confidence by enhancing the curves of the waist and hips and adding volume and lift to the buttocks. Many patients find this increases their quality of life and allows them to feel comfortable and confident wearing certain outfits and taking part in activities they previously avoided.

Who is suitable for a Skinny BBL?

Your surgeon will assess your suitability for Skinny BBL as part of your one-to-one bespoke consultation at our Chelsea based hospital in London. They will examine your buttocks, and determine how much fat you have available to transfer. They will discuss your concerns and your desired results, before explaining what would be possible for you. They may also suggest gaining some weight, if you don’t meet the Skinny BBL weight requirements, allowing you to have enough fat available to transfer. Your surgeon will also carry out a general health and wellness check to ensure you are fit and healthy for a surgical procedure under general anaesthetic.

Skinny BBL Shapes

During your consultation, your surgeon will not only discuss how much fat you would like to be transferred, but also the final shape you would like your buttocks to be. The most popular shapes for Skinny BBL are:

A-Shaped Buttocks
A-Shaped buttocks have more weight at the bottom (closer to the thighs) with a slimmer shape at the top to enhance a slim (snatched) waist. This creates a curvaceous appearance and can be adapted for a range of body shapes to create a natural, flattering result.

Inverted Heart Buttocks
This shape is very similar to the A-Shape with more width to the hips as well as the added volume in the bottom of the buttocks (in the shape of an upside- down heart). Whereas patients undergoing a regular BBL may be looking for their hips to be treated with Liposuction, to reduce the size and enhance the contours, Skinny BBL patients may have fat injected into this area to create more shape and volume.

O-Shaped Buttocks
O-Shaped buttocks are highly rounded and have volume throughout the entire buttock. This is the shape that is most associated with the Regular BBL and may not be suited for some Skinny BBL patients as it could create an unbalanced overall result. However, this will depend on the result you are looking for and your initial frame. Your surgeon will be able to discuss these options with you during your consultation.

Recovery from a Skinny BBL

Recovery from Skinny BBL usually takes between 6-8 weeks. Your surgeon will instruct you to wear a surgical garment throughout this time which will maintain your surgical results and will assist with the healing process. Depending on the number of Liposuction areas, you may require more than one surgical garment to cover different areas. You will also need to use a BBL cushion while you are sitting down during your recovery period to prevent excess pressure on your buttocks, which may stop the newly injected fat from being accepted by your body.

It is important to prepare for your Skinny BBL recovery in advance of your surgery, and your surgeon will provide you with all the aftercare instructions you will need at your consultation.

How does Skinny BBL surgery work?

Skinny BBL surgery works by removing excess fat from areas such as the abdomen, back, thighs and flanks, before it is processed to remove any impurities and excess fluid. The treated fat is then injected into your buttocks, as well as around the thighs and waist area to create volume and curves that a petite frame does not naturally have. In comparison to the Regular BBL, the Skinny BBL may involve more areas of Liposuction and fat transfer to create the curves and contours you are looking for to achieve your desired results.

The risks of a skinny BBL

When considering a Skinny BBL or any cosmetic surgery, it is crucial to understand any potential risks and complications. Your surgeon will explain how these complications and risks may impact your surgery should they occur and will also make sure you understand what you need to do to prevent them from arising. They will also measure your personal risk level, and may ask for certain tests or adjustments to your preparation to mitigate these risks.

Hematoma - This is the build- up of blood beneath the skin and will require treatment from your surgeon

Poor wound healing - Healing complications or infection can affect the incision sites

Seroma - This is the formation of a lump under the skin caused by buildup of fluid around the incision sites. This will require treatment from your surgeon.
