Which Concerns Affect the Lower Face?

Ageing can have a significant impact on the appearance of the lower face. Loss of collagen and elastin, sagging skin and lines and wrinkles all influence contours of the lower face.

The speed that lower face concerns develop, and how dramatically they appear, can be impacted by lifestyle factors such as sun exposure, genetics and facial weight changes. In some instances, concerns affecting the lower face can also occur naturally with no external influences such as Chin Shape and Volume, Double Chin or Jawline Definition.

Here, we look at some common concerns which affect the lower face, as well as some popular Injectable treatments which can address these conditions quickly and effectively.

Chin Shape or Volume

The shape and size of the chin can have a significant impact on the overall appearance and impression of the face. Concerns such as a Cleft Chin where a Y shaped dimple develops in the middle of the chin, giving an uneven appearance to the bottom edge of the chin affect the shape of the chin.

The natural shape of the chin is usually dictated by genetics – this is the case for a Cleft Chin which is caused by the two sides of the jawbone not fusing during development. However, the shape and volume of the chin can also be affected by ageing, weight changes or injury. Ageing and weight gain can lead to the chin looking softer and less defined – also known as having a weak chin. This can affect the balance of the face, creating a disproportionate appearance.

Having an undefined or weak chin can worsen the appearance of other concerns such as a Double Chin, Jowls or Smoker’s Lines. This can affect the overall appearance of the face giving a closed look or making someone look older than they are.

Double Chin

A Double Chin is characterised by an accumulation of fat in the area under the chin, between the face and neck. This gives the face a very rounded appearance and can give the impression that someone is larger than they are, which can create an unbalanced appearance.

Regardless of overall weight, a Double Chin can develop and can be caused by weight gain, ageing, or genetics. Many people find that a Double Chin is resistant to typical weight loss techniques such as diet change or exercise.

Having a Double Chin can make the jawline and chin look less defined, as well as making concerns such as Jowls look more severe.

Jawline Definition

For many people, the ideal jawline is sharp and defined. When the jawline becomes softer this can make the face look more aged and can also affect the proportions of the face.

The definition of the jawline is affected by a number of factors including weight gain, ageing and genetics. Similar to a Double Chin, excess weight around the jawline can be difficult to reduce with conventional lifestyle changes.

Having a soft jawline can exacerbate the appearance of other lower face concerns such as Jowls or a Double Chin.

Jowls

Jowls are the sagging skin which can appear hanging over the jawline. Whereas a Double Chin or undefined jawline are usually the result of excess fat in the lower face area, Jowls are loose skin.

Some people have Jowls due to genetics and they are naturally part of their face shape. It is also possible to develop them later in life due to collagen and elastin breaking down as part of the natural ageing process. Dramatic weight loss can also lead to Jowls appearing as the underlying fat disappears and the stretched skin isn’t able to return to its original position.

The appearance of Jowls can create a softer appearance around the jawline and also worsen the appearance of a Double Chin.

Marionette Lines

Marionette Lines run downwards from the outer corners of the mouth to the outer corners of the chin. They can create a very disjointed and aged appearance to the face.

The development of Marionette Lines is caused by the natural ageing process or dramatic weight loss. Their appearance can be worsened, or they can be caused to develop earlier by smoking or not using regular sun protection.

Marionette Lines can exacerbate the appearance of other concerns around the lower and central face including Nasolabial Folds, Smoker’s Lines, having thin lips or a weak chin or jawline.

Pebble Chin

A Pebble Chin appears as small pits or dimples in the chin, leading to the chin area looking bumpy and rough when the mouth moves.

Dimpling in the chin is caused by weakness or overactivity in the chin muscles, leading to texture appearing during movement in the lower face.

Having a Pebble Chin can make a Double Chin, a Weak Chin or an undefined jawline appear more severe. Chin Dimples can affect the proportions of the face giving an unbalanced overall appearance.

Injectables for Lower Face Concerns

Concerns affecting the lower face are centred around the chin and jawline and usually create the appearance of a softer, rounder face. Different injectable treatments can be used to effectively alleviate and address these concerns. Treating lower face concerns can increase confidence and make people feel more comfortable to wear open neck tops.

Injectable treatments can all be used as standalone treatments or combined to enhance the final result, depending on the severity of the concerns and the patient’s desired results.

Anti-Ageing Injectables for Lower Face Concerns

Anti-Ageing Injectables are an effective treatment for several concerns which affect the lower face. Controlled use of a neurotoxin (the active ingredient in Anti-Ageing Injectables) relaxes the underlying muscle which smooths the skin and calms overactive muscles.

Anti-Ageing Injectables can be used to address:

  • Double Chin – Anti-Ageing Injectables can be used to tighten and lift the skin around the chin, which can reduce the appearance of a Double Chin by creating a slimmer appearance to the chin area.
  • Marionette Lines – Anti-Ageing Injectables are one of the most effective treatments for lines and wrinkles. By relaxing the muscle which is lying under the skin where the wrinkles are located, the skin becomes smoother and more toned.
  • Jawline Definition – For patients who are worried their jawline appears too broad, Anti-Ageing Injectables can be used to relax the jaw muscles, giving the appearance of a slimmer jawline.
  • Pebble Chin – Pebble Chin is caused by overactivity in the chin muscles resulting in the skin showing dimples and texture when the jaw moves. By injecting Anti-Ageing Injectables into the area, the muscles are relaxed which limits their movement and either reduces the appearance of the dimples or prevents them from appearing entirely.
Jowls – In cases where Jowls have only just started to develop or aren’t severe, Anti-Ageing Injectables can be used to lift and tighten the skin in the jawline, reducing the appearance of the Jowls and sharpening the jawline. In instances where the Jowls are more severe, Anti-Ageing Injectables may not be a fully effective solution. Your consultant will discuss the best options with you during your consultation.

Anti-Ageing Injectables aren’t permanent and follow-up appointments are needed to retain the results. The length of time between top-ups varies between different people and can also depend on the concern being treated. For most patients, follow up treatments are needed every 3-4 months, however consistent use of Anti-Ageing Injectables can lead to a compounding effect, where treatments are needed less often.

Dermal Fillers for Lower Face Concerns

Dermal Fillers are primarily used to add volume into areas of the face which are hollowed or uneven or provide support to sagging skin. They are made from Hyaluronic Acid, a natural substance which is found in the skin, joints and eyes.

Dermal Filler can be used to treat several concerns affecting the lower face:

  • Chin Shape and Volume – For people who dislike the shape of their chin, or feel their chin is too small, Dermal Fillers can be used to increase the size of the chin or adjust the shape, resulting in a stronger line. Dermal Fillers are also an effective treatment for evening out the shape of a Cleft Chin, filling the gap in the middle of the chin and leaving a straight line at the bottom of the chin.
  • Jawline Definition – Dermal Fillers are a popular treatment option for addressing a weak jawline, resulting in a sharper jaw contour. By injecting Dermal Filler along the jawline, a new shape can be created, which is proportionate and flattering to the rest of the face.
  • Jowls – Dermal Fillers are an effective method for supporting and lifting loose and sagging skin. When injected into the Jowl area the definition of the jawline is improved and the loose skin is lifted, reducing the sagging skin around the lower face.
  • Marionette Lines – In instances where Marionette Lines are quite deep set, Dermal Filler can be injected to fill the space and lift the skin creating a smooth and even skin tone. In this treatment, your consultant may opt to inject Dermal Filler alongside Anti-Ageing Injectables to give the best result.

Dermal Fillers last for different amounts of time depending on the area treated and how quickly the patient naturally breaks down Filler. For most people, Filler lasts 6-12 months, and follow-up appointments are needed to maintain the results.

Sculptra for Lower Face Concerns

Sculptra is an alternative treatment to Dermal Filler which is also designed to increase volume and support sagging skin. Whereas Dermal Filler works by directly increasing the volume in a hollowed or sagging area, with Hyaluronic Acid, Sculptra’s active ingredient, Lactic Acid, stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin creating a fuller appearance.

Sculptra can be used to address the following lower face concerns:

  • Jawline Definition – When injected into a weak or softened jawline, Sculptra creates a stronger and more defined appearance around the jaw. By encouraging natural collagen production in the jawline Sculptra typically creates a slightly more subtle result than Dermal Fillers when addressing Jawline Definition.
  • Jowls – Like Dermal Fillers, Sculptra can be used to support sagging and loose skin. For people with Jowls, Sculptra can be injected to encourage collagen production to lift and tighten the Jowls, leaving a more even and defined lower face contour.
  • Marionette Lines – Sculptra can be used to treat deeper set Marionette Lines in a similar way to Dermal Fillers. Naturally produced collagen fills out the space left by the Marionette Lines resulting in a smoother appearance in the lower face.

Concerns affecting the lower face can impact confidence and exacerbate the appearance of other concerns around the face and neck. Injectable treatments provide effective treatment options which restore confidence and achieve a smooth, defined and balanced lower face.
