A Vasectomy is a surgical procedure which involves cutting the tubes which carry sperm from the testicles to the penis (the sperm ducts). This means that sperm is not able to be transferred during intercourse, preventing pregnancy from occurring.
Although a Vasectomy is a permanent option for male contraception, reversibility of Vasectomy can be considered in cases where circumstances change. Also known as Vas Reversal or Reverse Vasectomy, Vasectomy Reversal surgery is a simple and straightforward procedure, often carried out under local anaesthetic.
There are two procedures which can be performed to undo Vasectomy depending on the nature of your initial procedure and how your body has responded in the following time:
Reversing a Vasectomy is suited to patients whose circumstances have changed since they had their Vasectomy. This may include deciding they want more children, or they have a new partner who they would like to have children with. Additionally, in some rare instances (1-2%) patients experience chronic scrotal pain following Vasectomy. Reversing the procedure alleviates this pain.
During your consultation, your surgeon will explain that reversing a Vasectomy is not always successful, and that pregnancy following a Vasectomy Reversal is not guaranteed. Vasectomy Reversal success rate depends on how long it’s been since your initial procedure, the type of Vasectomy you had, and the type of reversal surgery required.
Typically, the sooner the reverse Vasectomy is carried out, the higher the chance of the procedure being successful. Patients whose initial Vasectomy was performed as Microsurgery (where a microscope is used to magnify the sperm ducts during the procedure) are more likely to have a successful Vasectomy Reversal procedure.
The Vasectomy reversal success rate is measured by sperm being present in the semen after the surgery. However, this doesn’t guarantee pregnancy, which can depend on age and male and female fertility as well as a successful Vasectomy Reversal.
The chances of getting pregnant following a partner’s Vasectomy Reversal surgery are affected by the length of time since the initial procedure:
It is important to discuss all of these factors, along with your reasons for considering a Vasectomy Reversal procedure with a consultant Urologist to allow you to decide the best way to proceed.

Your surgeon will assess your suitability for Vas Reversal during your one-to-one consultation at our award-winning clinic based in Chelsea, London.
Your personal patient advisor will book your consultation with a consultant Urologist. The urologist will discuss your reasons for considering a Vasectomy Reversal, and your medical history, as well as performing a physical examination.
Your consultant will consider the following factors when determining if you’re suitable for a Vasectomy Reversal:
Your surgeon will explain whether you are suitable for Vasectomy Reversal surgery during your consultation and will also address your chances of being able to have children, if this is something you are considering.
Patients undergo Vasectomy Reversal surgery for many reasons, and there are several benefits to this surgery:
We have handpicked a selection of the UK's best consultants to work at Cadogan Clinic, providing the highest-quality patient care and outcomes.
Although Vasectomy Reversal is straightforward, it takes slightly longer than an initial Vasectomy procedure, usually 1-2 hours, depending on what’s involved.
Your surgeon will make small incisions in your scrotum to locate the sperm ducts. They will then cut above and below where they were sealed during the initial procedure. The tubes will be gently opened to check the fluid inside. This will allow your surgeon to see if there’s a blockage in the epididymis, where the sperm is stored.
If there is no blockage, the surgeon will continue with performing a Vasovasostomy. They will join the openings of the sperm ducts back together using dissolvable stitches before closing the incisions.
If there is a blockage, your surgeon will perform a Vasoepididymostomy. They will join the sperm ducts directly to the epididymis, in a section which bypasses the block. This is a slightly more complex procedure and will take longer to perform. The surgeon will then close their incisions and your procedure will be complete.
Your surgeon will provide guidance and information on having your sperm levels tested following your Vasectomy Reversal. It usually takes three to six months for sperm levels to return to a normal level following Vasectomy Reversal, but it can take up to a year. If you have had a Vasoepididymostomy, it may take longer for your sperm level to be restored.
Most patients will have their sperm level tested three months after their Vasectomy Reversal procedure. Depending on the results of the testing, you may need further testing every three months, until the expected levels of sperm have returned.
If the sperm level hasn’t returned to the expected level after 18 months following a Vasectomy Reversal, your surgeon will discuss why the procedure hasn’t been successful, and what your options are. They may suggest another Vasectomy Reversal procedure to rejoin the sperm ducts, or fertility treatments such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, where the sperm is extracted from the epididymis to allow it to be transferred to the egg.
Mr. Bryan Mayou
Vasectomy Reversal is a highly beneficial procedure, which offers patients who have undergone a Vasectomy the option to restore their fertility. Reversing a Vasectomy is a straightforward procedure, but it is important to find an experienced and qualified consultant Urologist to perform the surgery to ensure the best results. Prioritising your safety and also allowing for the best chances of success are the most important factors when considering Vasectomy Reversal.Mr. Bryan Mayou
Can a Vasectomy be reversed?
Yes, a Vasectomy is a reversible procedure. Patients consider a reverse Vasectomy procedure for many reasons, most usually that they want to be able to have children or expand their family. It is important to remember that although it is possible to undo Vasectomy surgery, the success of the procedure is dependent on several factors, including when your initial Vasectomy was performed and the type of surgery performed.
Can a Vasectomy reverse itself?
Although Vasectomy has a 99% success rate, there are extremely rare cases where over time the sperm ducts reopen and small amounts of sperm is able to travel through, which may result in pregnancy. This is known as spontaneous re-canalisation.
Can a Vasectomy be reversed after 15 years?
A Vasectomy can be reversed at any stage following the initial surgery. However, if you wish to have children following a Vasectomy Reversal, it is important to remember that the longer the time between the initial procedure and the reversal, the lower the chances are of getting pregnant. The likelihood of getting pregnant following a Vasectomy Reversal, 15 years after the initial procedure are around 30%.
What is the average time to get pregnant after Vasectomy Reversal?
The length of time it takes to get pregnant following a Vasectomy Reversal will depend on the type of procedure and how long it takes for the sperm levels to restore. On average, most patients will find their partners can get pregnant within three to nine months of the Vasectomy Reversal. However, it can take over a year for sperm levels to restore to the expected levels. Patients who have undergone a Vasoepididymostomy may find their sperm levels take longer to restore than patients who have had a Vasovasostomy.
How successful is Vasectomy Reversal?
The vast majority of Vasectomies are able to be reversed successfully. Reversibility of Vasectomy success is measured by whether sperm is detected following Vas Reversal surgery. However, patients may consider other factors to be successful, such as whether they are able to have children. This will depend on how long the Reverse Vasectomy UK has been performed after the initial procedure and the type of surgery that was used for the original surgery.
Complications are rare although, as with all surgery, possible. Your surgeon will discuss each of these risks comprehensively at your consultation.
