What is a Face Lift for Men?

A facelift for men is a surgical procedure which tackles wrinkles and sagging skin, caused by the natural ageing process. Facelift procedures are carried out by lifting the skin and tightening the underlying structures resulting in a more youthful and defined facial appearance.

A Facelift is a popular surgery option for men who want to address any signs of ageing which may be impacting their confidence. Facelifts for men are becoming increasingly popular, with the number of male Facelifts performed jumping by 45 percent in just five years.

Facelifts for male patients differ from female patients due to the differences in the facial anatomy between men and women. Men typically have denser bone and facial structures, meaning the surgeon may have to manipulate the tissue more dramatically than they would have to for a woman to get the same result. At Cadogan Clinic our surgeons respect gender-specific anatomy and will carry out surgery to maintain and enhance male features, such as retaining a defined, chiselled chin and avoiding introducing too much volume to certain areas, which can feminise the face. A London face lift for men at Cadogan Clinic typically tackles concerns such as under-eye bags, hollowed temples and sagging skin around the jawline, known as jowls.

Your surgeon will be able to recommend the best type of Facelift for men to address your concerns in a one-to-one consultation.

1 in 10 facelift patients at the Cadogan Clinic is male. This figure has grown massively however in the past 5 years, with patient volumes growing 4x since 2019.

What is involved in a Male Facelift?

Depending on your specific concerns and the results you are hoping to achieve, there are a number of Facelift techniques your surgeon may suggest.

This is a modified version of the traditional facelift, and is less invasive, generally focusing on the lower portion of the face. This technique is especially effective in addressing loose skin around the jawline and can be performed alongside other procedures such as a Chin Augmentation which is popular with men who wish to have a more defined, and masculine, jawline.

There are several different Mini Facelift techniques suitable for men which we use here at the Cadogan Clinic.

  • The S Facelift is named after the shape of the incision and your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat to contour the lower portions of the face. This results in a defined profile, a popular request for men seeking a facelift.
  • The SMAS Facelift, also known as the Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System Facelift, targets the bottom two-thirds of the face. This addresses male concerns of excess fat, sagging skin and unwanted jowls. It can also restore lost volume to the cheeks if desired.
  • The Deep Plane Facelift is a more invasive technique with a longer lasting result. Your surgeon will cut into the deeper layers of tissue between the fat and muscle and manipulate and lift the layers of tissue to provide masculine definition to the cheeks and jawline.

These techniques target the lower part of the face, but they can be combined with surgeries which target other problem areas, such as Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Reduction), which tackles eye bags and dropping eyelids, both common male concerns.

As leading male facelift London surgical providers, we are proud of the tailored approach to each of our patients' journeys. This is to say, we offer plenty of techniques to best suit your skin quality, desired results, and facial anatomy.

Also known as a Rhytidectomy, a traditional full facelift for men targets deep set folds and wrinkles, improving and lifting the appearance of the whole face. As it is a more extensive and invasive procedure, the incisions are longer, resulting in a higher likelihood of visible scarring, compared to the mini facelift. This means it may not be a good choice for men who are experiencing or are concerned about hair loss.

The Micro Facelift is an innovative procedure, suited to younger patients, who are experiencing the early signs of ageing. It is minimally invasive and has subtle results with very little scarring.

This particular Facelift option targets the mid-section of the face, from below the eyes, around the cheekbones and down to the upper lip. This section of the face is prone to the early signs of ageing including common male complaints of hollowed eyes and deep nasolabial folds.

This technique restores masculine cheekbone definition by addressing sagging cheek fat, and results in a natural, more youthful, appearance. A Micro Facelift can also be combined with other surgical procedures, such as a Neck Lift, for an enhanced result. A micro facelift is often a precursor to a Mini or full Facelift.

Why is a Facelift Different for Men and Women?

Typically, male and female facial features are different. Men generally have thinner lips which are set further away from the base of the nose, as well as more prominent noses and larger foreheads. They will also usually have more angular cheeks, with a squarer jawline and chin.

These differences in the anatomy of the male face mean that Facelifts for men are carried out differently from how a similar procedure would be performed on a female patient.

Men have denser facial bone structures than women. This means that Facelift surgery is slightly more easily carried out on a woman as the tissue is easier to manipulate. Men often also have thicker skin, especially around the neck, jaw and bottom portion of the face. This is why many Male Facelifts focus on tackling concerns in this area, as the skin is more likely to sag dramatically here due to natural collagen depletion - part of the natural ageing process. This leads to jowls around the jawline and sagging cheeks. As a man’s face is naturally more angular than a woman’s face, this can make a male face appear softer and more feminine with age.

Another way the male face differs from a woman’s is the presence of facial hair. Your surgeon may opt to use this hair to conceal incisions. Some men can find that the movement of their skin results in a change in the position of their beard as well. If this change is unwanted, laser hair removal can adjust the shape of the beard.

Your surgeon will ensure they carry out your Facelift in the best way to leave a flattering and masculine result. To discuss your concerns and your aims from surgery, book a consultation with one of our expert surgeons.

Face Lift Surgeons

We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.

Male Facelift Procedure

How should you prepare for your Facelift procedure at Cadogan Clinic, and what can you expect when you choose surgery with us?

You will have up to two consultations with your surgeon at our Chelsea based clinic, in the heart of London to discuss your concerns, your desired results and the right surgery for you. Consultations are usually up to an hour long and is the best way to understand what a Facelift can do for you.

To prepare for your consultation, we recommend writing down any questions you may have for your surgeon. This may include:

During your consultation, your surgeon will also carry out a health and wellness assessment, take some measurements of your face and take photos for your medical records.

Following your consultation, your surgeon will send your bespoke surgical plan to your patient advisor. If you are suitable for surgery, your advisor will contact you to explain the treatment plan, pricing and discuss some potential surgery dates. You will then have a two-week cooling off period to reflect on your consultation and surgical plan and decide whether you would like to proceed with your surgery.

If you decide to go ahead with your male face lift, you will next come back to Cadogan Clinic on the day of your surgery. In the weeks running up to your surgery, you will be asked to prepare using the following steps:

  • Along with your confirmation pack, you will be sent a medical and psychological questionnaire to complete. This will be reviewed by your surgeon, anaesthetist and our nurses to make sure you are ready to proceed with surgery.
  • If you smoke or vape, your surgeon will ask you to stop for at least six weeks before surgery can take place. This is vital for your recovery as smoking can have a serious impact on your body’s ability to heal.
  • You will be asked to cut down on drinking alcohol as excessive alcohol consumption can also impact the healing and recovery process. You must not consume any alcohol in the 48 hours before your surgery.
  • For 7 days before your procedure, avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, as well as any herbal supplements such as turmeric as these can increase the risk of bleeding during your procedure.
  • You will need a chaperone to collect and supervise you following your Facelift. This should be a family member or friend who can either drive you themselves or accompany you in a taxi and stay with you for the first night.
  • For all procedures being carried out under general anaesthetic or sedation you will be asked to fast. You mustn’t eat any solid food or consume any juice or milk (including tea or coffee) in the 6 hours before you arrive at the clinic. You may have sips of clear liquids (water, or black tea and coffee) up to 2 hours before you arrive at the clinic, and then no food or drink in the final 2 hours.

On the day of your facelift for men, you will be asked to arrive at the clinic an hour before your surgery time. When you arrive, our nurses will take you into the pre-op area to make sure you are ready for surgery and carry out some brief checks - your blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. They will also ask you to put on a surgical gown and compression stocking. You will then speak with your surgeon and anaesthetist to ask any final questions, and your surgeon will make any markings around your face that they require.

When you are taken into theatre, you will get settled on the bed and your anaesthetist will administer your general anaesthetic. All procedures at Cadogan Clinic are done using TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia). This is a gentler anaesthetic and has a lower rate of post-operative sickness and a faster initial recovery time.

Once your surgeon has completed your Facelift, you will be taken to our recovery ward, where you will wake up from the anaesthetic and a nurse will monitor your vital health signs. Once you are awake and comfortable, you will be taken into our ambulatory ward where you will have something to eat and drink. A nurse will talk you through any medication you need to take once you leave and what you can expect in your first few days of recovery. When you are ready to leave, the nurses will ask your chaperone to come and collect you and you will be discharged.

In the first few days after your procedure, you may experience some pain. Your surgical team will have prescribed any medications you will need to help to control this. Following a Facelift, most patients find they are mobile within a day and able to bathe normally in three days.

Your surgeon will ask you to sleep on your back for at least two weeks following your Facelift, to prevent any pressure being put on to your incisions. Depending on the type of Facelift you have had, your surgeon may also ask you to wear a garment to support the face and neck and reduce any swelling.

One week after your surgery you will have an in-person appointment with our nurses where they will assess your incisions, remove your stitches and make sure you are healing well. They will provide any advice you need on dressings and will be able to answer any questions you may have about your recovery. Depending on the nature of your procedure, you may be asked to come back again a week later for another wound check.

Six weeks after your Facelift, you will have an appointment with your surgeon where they will discuss your recovery, assess your results and take another set of photos. After six weeks, if you have any questions or concerns, you will have access to our specialist nursing helpline.

The Patient Journey

Frequently Asked Questions

Facelift surgery will tackle concerns such as sagging and wrinkling skin around your lower face and prevent new lines from forming as quickly in areas such as the forehead. You will look refreshed and rejuvenated.

This procedure will give your face a more masculine appearance, giving more definition to the chin, jawline and cheeks. The overall effect of the surgery will be enhanced if you have opted to undergo other procedures alongside your facelift, for example, a brow lift.

The final results are usually visible around six weeks after your facelift procedure, with ongoing improvements likely to appear beyond this point. It can take up to 12 months for the healing process to be fully complete. We advise planning ahead if you are thinking about having the procedure ahead of a big event, such as a wedding and we recommend allowing around two to three months for recovery ahead of such an occasion.

As well as the numerous physical benefits, facelifts for men can also help improve confidence and self-esteem, therefore having a positive impact on overall mental health.

You should have a day of rest after surgery and should be reasonably mobile within one to two days following your procedure.

Your surgeon will suggest taking up to two weeks off work as part of your recovery. Vigorous exercise and activity, including going to the gym, and lifting any heavy weights should be avoided for four to six weeks post-surgery.

Your surgeon will recommend sleeping on your back for two to three weeks to avoid putting pressure on your face. During your initial recovery period, you will experience bruising and swelling around your face, so this area will be particularly tender.

You may gently shower and wash your hair 48 hours after Facelift surgery, taking particular care on the treated areas. You can also blow dry your hair on a cool setting. Be gentle when brushing or combing your hair so that you do not catch your comb in the suture lines.

You should expect a full recovery from your facelift by six weeks.

Words from Our Founder

Mr. Bryan Mayou

Male cosmetic surgery has vastly increased in popularity in the past few decades, with facial surgeries such as facelift among the most popular surgeries for men. Whilst the proportion of male facelifts remains quite low at 1 in 10 of all those that we see at the Cadogan, this number has grown fourfold in the past five years at our Clinic. Our approach specifically adresses desired male characteristics such as a strong cheekbones and jawline, and differs in approach from our female patient base.

The Risks of a Facelift for Men

Facelifts for men are a safe procedure all of Cadogan Clinic’s surgeons are highly experienced and have carried out this procedure numerous times. However, it is common to experience the following temporary effects after Facelift surgery:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Temporary numbness
  • A small amount of visible scarring

Male facelift surgeries carry some risk of complications. Following your procedure, there is a small chance you may experience one or more of the following:

  • Nausea
  • Bleeding or infection
  • Poor healing of incisions and scarring
  • A collection of blood underneath the skin known as a haematoma
  • A collection of fluid underneath the skin in the surgical area known as a seroma
  • Death of fat tissue (fat necrosis) or embolism
  • Hair loss or hairline distortion
  • Excessive bleeding (haemorrhage)
  • Developing a blood clot in a vein. Also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • An allergic reaction to the anaesthetic

Your surgeon will discuss these risks at your consultation and will assess your personal risk for each of them. To reduce the risk of complications, your surgeon may ask you to follow certain steps to prepare for your surgery and during your recovery including stopping smoking and wearing compression stockings. Following all of this advice for pre- and post-operative care, your male face lift before and after results should heal properly and appear the best they can be.
