Liposuction for Men

While liposuction is a well-known and popular cosmetic treatment for women, it is also a popular choice for men who are concerned about excess and stubborn fat or who are unhappy with the contours of their body.

Popular areas for liposuction treatment in men include:

The face - Men often contend with fatty deposits in the chin and neck regions, especially as they age.  Liposuction around the face needs to be precise and carefully carried out, to prevent scarring which may impact facial hair growth and skin quality.

The abdomen - Liposuction is an effective treatment for stubborn subcutaneous fat (which lies under the skin, not the muscle). Many men are seeking a contoured midriff, and our surgeons can use Liposuction etching techniques to define the muscle lines.

The flanks - The area around the hips is another common concern among men, often causing unflattering bulges over the waistband of trousers. Liposuction is a highly effective treatment for this area; however, some patients may experience some residual loose skin.

Gynaecomastia - Male Breast Reduction is one of the most sought-after procedures for men at Cadogan Clinic. Liposuction can be used alongside the excision of tissue to enhance the procedure and create a flatter more defined chest or pectorals.

Why do men have Liposuction?

Many men find that dissatisfaction with the size and shape of their body can lead to insecurity, especially when losing unwanted weight has not been possible through changes to diet and exercise. Liposuction is also effective in enhancing the body’s contours and improving bodily proportions. Our surgeons can use a Liposuction technique to define the contours of muscles in the abdomen, creating a visible six-pack. This means liposuction before and after male cases can be truly transformational, revealing definition previously not seen.

As London liposuction for men surgeons and consultants, we appreciate that our male patients may not feel comfortable in their skin. You may be surprised to learn how many men choose to undergo male lipo in London; in fact, BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) found that liposuction was the 4th most sought-after surgical procedure for men in their 2022 audit.

Following Liposuction, patients feel more confident in their appearance and are more comfortable in fitted clothing and sportswear.

Who is suitable for Male Liposuction?

Liposuction is not intended as a weight loss procedure, and despite common misconceptions, you must be a healthy weight to undergo Liposuction. Our consultant surgeons will assess whether you are suitable in a one-to-one bespoke consultation. They will discuss your concerns and your desired results before showing you some before and after photos.

They will also assess your general health and wellbeing to make sure you are fit and well for a general anaesthetic procedure. You must be over 18 to have lipo for men.

Liposuction for Men Procedure

What can you expect from your Liposuction journey at Cadogan Clinic and how should you prepare for your procedure.

You will have up to two consultations at our award-winning clinic to discuss your UK male liposuction procedure. Consultations are between 30-60 minutes long and your surgeon will discuss your concerns and explain the best approach and techniques for you to achieve your desired results.

To get the most from your consultation, we recommend writing your questions down to bring with you. This will allow you and your surgeon to structure your consultation in the best way for you to understand how male lipo may benefit you and how best to tailor the procedure to your desired results and body. After this initial discussion, your surgeon will also conduct a general health and wellness assessment, take your measurements and take photos of your treatment areas for your medical records.

If your surgeon decides you are suitable for male liposuction, your surgical patient advisor will contact you to explain the proposed procedure and the pricing. They will help you to plan a suitable surgery date, before giving you a compulsory two week cooling off period to consider whether you wish to undergo the procedure.

If you decide to go ahead with your Liposuction procedure, your surgeon will ask you to take certain steps, to make sure your procedure and recovery are as smooth and effective as possible.

  • You will need to complete your pre-operative questionnaires so your surgeon, anaesthetist and nurses can review your medical and psychological history and confirm you are ready to go ahead with Liposuction.
  • You must stop smoking and vaping for six weeks ahead of your surgery. This is vital to ensure your recovery is smooth and you heal fully and properly.
  • You must not consume any alcohol in the 48 hours before your Liposuction procedure.
  • For 7 days before your procedure, stop taking any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, as well as any herbal supplements as these can all increase the risk of bleeding
  • You need to ask a chaperone to collect you after your surgery. This should be a family member or friend who can either drive you or accompany you in a taxi and stay with you for the first night.
  • You cannot consume any solid food, juice or milk (including tea or coffee) for 6 hours before you arrive at the clinic on the day of your procedure. You can have sips of clear liquids (water, or black tea and coffee) up to 2 hours before you arrive at the clinic.

You will be asked to arrive at the clinic an hour before your surgery is scheduled to begin. You will be welcomed by our nurses, who will measure your blood pressure, temperature and heart rate, as a final check that you are ready for surgery. You will then speak to your surgeon and anaesthetist so you can ask any final questions.

You will then be taken into theatre, and your anaesthetist will administer your general anaesthetic, so you are completely asleep and unaware of the procedure. All procedures at Cadogan Clinic are done using TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) which is beneficial as it minimises post-operative sickness and allows for a faster initial recovery, meaning you can be discharged more quickly.

Your surgeon will then carry out the procedure. Depending on the number of areas that are being treated, Liposuction for men can take anywhere between 90 minutes and over 4 hours. Once your procedure is completed, you will wake up on our recovery ward, where a nurse will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. Once you are awake and comfortable, you will be taken into our ambulatory to have something to eat and drink. A nurse will talk you through any medication you need to take once you leave and how to look after your dressings. When you are ready, the nurses will contact your chaperone and you will be discharged.

Most patients say that the pain level following male liposuction is manageable and is usually compared to an aching sensation. Your surgical team will have prescribed any medications you may need to help to control any discomfort. It is important to try and be as mobile as possible following Liposuction to keep your circulation active, this will also assist with your healing.

You will be asked to wear a compression garment, covering the areas that have been operated on for up to 8 weeks, day and night following Liposuction. This helps with healing, to reduce swelling and stop fluid from collecting. The garment will also protect your incisions and prevent infection.

One week after your surgery you will have an in-person appointment with our nurses so they can assess your incisions and make sure you are healing well. They will explain how to continue looking after your dressings and answer any questions you have about your recovery.

Your final aftercare appointment will be six weeks after your procedure. You will meet your surgeon again so they can discuss your recovery and results and answer any questions you have about how the procedure went. After six weeks, if you have any questions or concerns, you will still be able to contact the team and speak with one of our specialist nurses.

The Patient Journey

Frequently Asked Questions

Liposuction, often referred to as "lipo," is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body.

During the procedure, fat cells are broken down using either vibrations or a high-pressure water jet. Small incisions are made to introduce a cannula, which is used to loosen and suction out the fat. Where a larger area requires treatment, multiple incisions may be necessary. Excess fluids and blood are carefully drained before the treatment site is sutured and bandaged.

After undergoing liposuction, patients are provided with a compression garment to wear for several weeks, helping to reduce swelling and bruising.

In certain cases, a tummy tuck and liposuction can be performed concurrently. While liposuction primarily targets fat removal, a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, focuses on excess skin removal, resulting in a firmer, flatter abdomen. Abdominoplasty can also address other concerns, including stretch marks, weakened abdominal muscles, and uneven fat distribution.

Abdominoplasty is known for delivering impressive results with minimal downtime.

The Cadogan Clinic was founded by Mr. Bryan Mayou, a pioneer who introduced liposuction to the UK over 40 years ago.

Today, we house the country's leading team of liposuction experts, boasting unparalleled experience in various techniques. Our extensive expertise allows us to offer diverse liposuction methods tailored to your specific needs. Currently, our offerings include Lipomatic, MicroAir, BodyJet, MicroLiposuction, and SmartLipoMPX, utilising ultrasound for liposuction.

Liposuction offers a quick, safe, and effective solution for permanently eliminating stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Unlike weight loss, which shrinks fat cells, liposuction removes fat cells entirely.

This means that even if you gain weight in the future, the treated areas will retain their relative shape. The procedure enhances body proportions, improves clothing fit, and minimises scarring thanks to small incisions.

You should be aware that liposuction is not an effective solution to cellulite or obesity. If you need treatment for cellulite you should discuss combining procedures with your surgeon. Consult with your surgeon if you are looking for weight loss advice, where liposuction may be part of a long-term treatment plan.

Recovery following liposuction is relatively quick, thanks to the procedure's simplicity.

Recovery begins as soon you awaken from sedation, with advanced TIVA anaesthesia techniques ensuring a quicker and more comfortable wake-up experience. We recommend taking approximately one week off from work to allow for mild bruising and swelling to subside.

Pain is typically minimal, and most patients can resume their daily activities and light exercise within a few weeks, avoiding strenuous activities during this period. Wearing a compression garment for six weeks aids in reducing swelling.

Liposuction recovery is finally complete in around six weeks when results should start to be visible. Full results will take between six to 12 months.

When choosing a provider or surgeon for your liposuction procedure, safety and quality of care should be your top priorities. The level of experience that both the clinic and surgeon have with liposuction procedures is essential. However, it's undeniable that cost also plays a significant role in your decision-making process.

The cost of your liposuction surgery is a critical factor to consider when selecting a clinic. Prices can vary widely across the UK, influenced by several key factors such as reputation, experience, and the quality of the clinic, surgeon and nursing staff, as well as the quality and track record of the pre-and post-operative care.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we exclusively collaborate with top-tier surgeons and nursing staff at our specialised facilities in Chelsea. Our primary focus is on delivering safe, high-quality surgery and providing exceptional value for our patients.

The cost of a liposuction procedure at the Cadogan Clinic starts at £3,950 for one area. For liposuction in two areas, the cost is £6,000, and for three areas, it's £6,900.

Please note that the prices quoted online are approximate and subject to confirmation during an in-person consultation. The cost may vary depending on whether you choose local or general anaesthesia.

The Cadogan Clinic offers financing options through various reputable high-street providers. Our patient advisors can assist you in finding a trusted finance provider accepted by the clinic.

It's important to mention that liposuction costs in the UK are exempt from VAT as they are considered medical procedures.

Liposuction can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. While local anaesthesia may be suitable for smaller areas like the neck, it can be less comfortable and more time-consuming.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we prefer Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) for most procedures. TIVA ensures a more comfortable and quicker wake-up experience, allowing patients to return home on the same day.

Both men and women undergo liposuction each year to achieve various goals. Liposuction can effectively address gynecomastia in men and common areas like the stomach, hips, and thighs in women.

Consider liposuction if:

  • You have stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise.
  • You seek improved body proportion and contour.
  • Your skin is in good condition.
  • You have realistic expectations.

Liposuction may not be suitable if you have loose, sagging skin or require significant weight loss. Cellulite treatment may also require a different approach.

While liposuction is the preferred method for substantial fat reduction, alternatives exist. These include:

  • Surgical Fat Excision (effective for smaller areas)
  • Chemical Injections (multiple treatments, limited control)
  • Non-Surgical Options (less effective, limited results)

Liposuction scars are minimal due to the small incisions used during the procedure. At the Cadogan Clinic, we prioritise minimising these scars by using as few incisions as possible and employing gentle techniques to minimise trauma.

For those prone to severe scarring, we also offer a comprehensive scar management program utilising high-energy devices and lasers.

While liposuction is a relatively low-risk procedure, it's essential to be aware of potential side effects, including numbness, infection, embolism, oedema, and allergic reactions.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we have over 40 years of experience in liposuction and take extensive precautions to manage these risks. Our 24/7 nursing on-call service is available for any post-surgery concerns.

Selecting an experienced and qualified surgeon is crucial for your liposuction procedure. A good surgeon will provide in-depth explanations of the procedure, recovery, and potential risks. They should have a portfolio of liposuction before-and-after photos and offer patient testimonials. Your surgeon should prioritise your physical and psychological well-being.

Ensure your surgeon is a registered doctor or surgeon on the General Medical Council (GMC) online register. Membership in professional associations like BAAPS or BAPRAS may also be indicative of expertise, but it's essential to consider the surgeon's qualifications and experience.

What are the risks?

Before opting for Liposuction, it is vital to be aware of the potential risks and complications that may arise during and after your surgery. Your surgeon will discuss all possible complications with you during your consultation and will assess your personal risk. They may ask you to follow certain steps as you are preparing for surgery to reduce your risk level.

Some potential complications include:

  • Hematoma or Seroma - This is the build-up of blood or fluid beneath the skin and will require treatment from your surgeon
  • Poor wound healing - Healing complications or infection can affect the incision sites
  • Asymmetry - Occasionally, the areas that have been treated, may appear uneven
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Allergic reaction to general anaesthetic
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a vein)

All of Cadogan Clinic’s consultant surgeons are highly skilled and have performed Liposuction numerous times. Any complications that arise are not a reflection of your surgeon’s skill and qualifications.
