What is Chin Liposuction?

Chin Liposuction, also known as double chin surgery, is a simple facial fat removal procedure using Liposuction to help get rid of a stubborn double chin

Chin Liposuction London at the Cadogan Clinic is intended for those with excess fat around the chin and lower portion of the face, which can cause a lack of definition around the lower face.

How Does Chin Liposuction Work?

During Chin Lipo, the surgeon will insert a small tube called a cannula into different locations in the chin. The tube is moved back and forth to break down the fat and the loosened fat cells are extracted from the body. The cannula that is used is very fine, so only small incisions are needed, leaving minimal scarring.

As well as facial fat removal, double chin liposuction leaves the patient with a smoother, more defined, profile.

How popular is Chin Liposuction?

Chin Liposuction is an extremely popular facial liposuction treatment for both men and women, accounting for roughly 10% of all Liposuction procedures.

Liposuction of the chin is popular for different reasons. Whereas women are seeking a leaner profile, men generally hope to achieve a more chiseled, masculine shape. Fatty deposits in the chin are often an issue for men. Men benefit from a more simple and precise liposuction technique as their skin is thinner and not as elastic as in a woman.

Can I combine other procedures with Chin Lipo?

Chin liposuction can be combined with other surgical and non-surgical treatments, such as a neck lift, mini face lift or Morpheus8 focusing on improving the lower portion of the face, for an enhanced result. Many chin liposuction UK cases are conducted in isolation, but just as many combine these different approaches and procedures.

Although Chin Liposuction is a great facial fat removal technique, it does not improve skin quality. You may not be a good candidate for double chin liposuction if your skin isn’t very elastic and looks loose and saggy.

If you are aged over 50 with substantial skin laxity, your consultant may recommend a Neck Lift alongside face lipo. A Neck Lift will correct a double chin and address loose, hanging skin around the neck. Although liposuction is an invasive treatment, facial liposuction is less invasive than a Neck Lift.

Those aged in their 40s or 50s with problematic sagging skin on the lower part of the face, including the chin, jaw, jowls and upper neck, would benefit from a Mini Face Lift, either with or without Chin Liposuction.

Your surgeon will be able to discuss all the available facial fat removal treatment options with you at your initial consultation.

Why do people have Chin Liposuction?

Why do people have it & Who is suittable

There are a number of reasons why men or women may opt to undergo face lipo to treat a double chin or lack of jaw definition:

  • They are bothered by the appearance of excess chin fat
  • Diet or exercise is having no effect on the chin fat
  • To restore a more youthful appearance to the lower part of a woman’s face
  • To restore a more chiseled, masculine appearance to the male face
  • Desire for a quick result
  • To restore definition to the lower part of the face
  • Double chin is causing unhappiness or insecurity
  • Chin fat is having an impact on overall mental wellbeing.

Whilst this surgical procedure is 'small' compared to body surgeries, it is very powerful. Chin liposuction before and after cases, as well as chin augmentation and implant patients, can truly change a patient's face.

Who is Suitable For Chin Lipo?

Cadogan Clinic considers individuals fit for facial liposuction and double chin surgery, if all of the following are true of them:

  • Physically and psychologically fit and healthy
  • Bothered by the appearance of a double chin
  • Does not have excessive sagging skin around the lower part of the face
  • Have realistic expectations of what can be achieved by surgery
  • Are over the age of 18 years old

Chin Liposuction Surgeons

We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.

What to expect

Below you will find some key information to help you prepare for surgery and make necessary arrangements to ensure you have the support you need and that everything runs smoothly on the day.

Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic will start with up to two consultations with one of our leading specialist plastic surgeons at our award-winning premises in Chelsea. These consultations will take between 30 and 60 minutes. We will talk you through any accessibility concerns, including the double chin liposuction cost options if you are looking to potentially combine with other procedures.

A thorough consultation

You will first come to the clinic for an in-person consultation with one of our expert face lipo surgeons. During your consultation, your surgeon will ask about your expectations for your double chin surgery and talk about what will happen during the procedure. They will also explain the results that are possible for you, and how you may benefit from Chin Liposuction.

It is important that you are open and honest about what you hope to achieve through surgery to help ensure the best possible result. Your face lipo surgeon will be happy to answer any questions you may have at this point. It may be a good idea to write your questions down before attending the consultation. Having established what you want from the surgery, and what is possible given your facial anatomy, several key measurements will be made and standard clinical photography will be taken. Your medical history will be discussed and a physical examination will be carried out.

If your face lipo surgeon feels you are a good candidate for Chin Liposuction, you are then invited to consider whether you would like to proceed with your double chin liposuction or not following a two week 'cooling off' period.

During this cooling off period, we do implore our patients to consider their own health and safety and not to 'cut corners' by seeking options from other countries. The dangers of travelling abroad for cosmetic surgery far outweigh personal budget concerns, as the chin liposuction cost UK surgeons such as ourselves standardise can also be accommodated with finance options. This ensures we can keep our patients safe with care that is accessible to them both geographically and financially.

Preparing for Chin Liposuction

If you decide to proceed with your Chin Lipo procedure, you will be asked to follow these instructions to prepare for your surgery:

  • You will be sent a medical and psychological questionnaire to complete. This is to ensure your surgeon and medical team have all of the correct information ahead of your procedure
  • If you smoke or vape, you will be asked to stop for at least 6 weeks before your Chin Liposuction surgery. Smoking and vaping can both impact your recovery and healing
  • You should stop drinking alcohol at least 48 hours before your surgery. Alcohol can increase inflammation which may impact your procedure and results
  • You will be asked to stop taking some medications and supplements such as aspirin and turmeric which can thin the blood and may cause complications during your surgery
  • You will need to organise a chaperone to come and collect you following your surgery. This should be a responsible friend or family member who can either drive you home themselves or accompany you in a taxi
  • Before you arrive at the clinic, you should not consume any solid food, juice or milk in the six hours before you arrive, and drink nothing but clear fluids (such as water, black tea or black coffee) up to two hours before you arrive.

Your surgery day

When you arrive at the clinic on the day of your surgery, you will be greeted by one of our nurses, who will check your heart rate, blood pressure and temperature to make sure you are well for surgery. They will ask you to put on a surgical gown and compression socks, and will give you somewhere to store anything you have brought with you.

Your surgeon and anaesthetist will then come to meet you and answer any final questions you have. Your surgeon will make any marks around your chin they need to and you will then be taken into theatre.

Once you are in theatre, your anaesthetist will make sure you are comfortable, and will then administer the anaesthetic so you are asleep throughout your Chin Liposuction surgery. At Cadogan Clinic, all surgical procedures are performed using Trans Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA). This allows for faster recovery and better patient comfort including less risk of nausea post-surgery. Your surgeon will then complete your Chin Liposuction procedure.

When your Chin Lipo procedure has been completed, you will wake up in our recovery ward. Our nurses will monitor your blood pressure, temperature and heart rate and will make sure you are comfortable. Once you are fully awake, you will be taken into an ambulatory room, where you will have something to eat and drink. Once you are ready, our nurses will give you the aftercare instructions you require and will ask your chaperone to come and collect you so you can continue your recovery at home.

Chin Liposuction recovery

Most patients find that recovery following Chin Liposuction is reasonably straightforward. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising during the first few days and you will have been provided with any painkillers you may need to reduce discomfort. After one week, you will come back to the clinic to see our specialist nurses, who will check your incisions and answer any questions you have. You will then see your surgeon six weeks after your Chin Lipo procedure to discuss your recovery and results.

The Patient Journey

Words from Our Founder

Mr. Bryan Mayou

Liposuction to the chin is a simple and minimally invasive procedure that creates a slimmer jawline and more defined neck contour. As it can be performed very quickly, often under local anaesthetic, the impact can be as quick as it is dramatic. Having pioneered Liposuction in the UK, 40 years ago, I am pleased to see it being used in this way - subtly, but with striking results.

Frequently Asked Questions

When considering jawline liposuction, you may also come across a similar technique known as Chin Liposculpture. Whereas Liposuction simply extracts fat from the area, Chin Liposculpture focuses on enhancing facial contours and definition.

Although Chin Liposculpture also utilises Liposuction, it may be more suited to patients who are concerned about having a weak jawline, as well as excess fat around their lower face. In some cases, Chin Liposculpture may also involve Fat Transfer to reshape the jawline.

Your consultant will discuss all of the options with you during your consultation and will help you to decide between Chin Liposculpture and Chin Lipo.

Although both procedures target concerns around the lower face, Chin Lipo and Jaw Lipo are slightly different. Jawline Lipo targets the entire jawline – from under the ears to the centre of the chin.

This is suited to patients who are concerned about excess fat around their entire lower face. Chin Liposuction targets the area directly under the chin, in the centre of the face. This specifically addresses the common concern of a double chin and won’t take fat from further up the jawline as well.

Both Chin Lipo and Jawline Liposuction result in a contoured and defined lower face, but the correct procedure will depend on your exact concerns and where the fat deposits are located in your face. Your surgeon will discuss both options with you, and will help you to decide Chin Liposuction and Jawline Lipo.
