What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction stands as one of the foremost choices in cosmetic surgery within the UK, representing approximately 10% of all cosmetic procedures in 2021.

This transformative procedure targets and eliminates persistent pockets of fat in areas resistant to diet and exercise, offering a highly efficient solution. Liposuction sculpts the body, creating more defined contours and harmonious proportions. These areas of enhancement encompass the buttocks, hips, thighs, abdomen, chin, upper arms, breasts, and knees.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we specialise in delivering the most effective liposuction techniques, catering to both men and women. Our offerings include traditional liposuction, Body Jet liposuction, and laser liposuction.

The credit for introducing Liposuction, often affectionately called 'lipo,' to the UK goes to our founder, the esteemed plastic surgeon, Mr Bryan Mayou, who brought this transformative procedure to our shores three decades ago.

Under Mr Mayou's guidance, we've curated a world-class team of surgeons here at our Chelsea clinic, nurturing their expertise in this specialised field. As a result, we've emerged as the leading destination for liposuction in London, known for our commitment to delivering excellent results through minimally invasive techniques.

Our commitment to excellence drives us to continuously explore and refine our methods. Following extensive research, we've opted not to offer Vaser or Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction, as we believe they provide no significant advantage and may introduce unnecessary complexities.

Before and After Liposuction

Why do people have it?

For many individuals, regardless of gender, dissatisfaction with their size and shape can lead to insecurity, especially when conventional diet and exercise efforts fall short of achieving desired results.

Liposuction presents a simple yet effective solution to bring about these transformative changes, offering not only enhanced physical appearance but also a profound boost in psychological well-being.

Who is suitable?

Why do people have it & Who is suittable

At Cadogan Clinic, we carefully evaluate individuals to ensure they are suitable candidates for the procedure. We consider individuals eligible for liposuction if all the following criteria apply to them:

  • They are troubled by concerns related to their size or shape.
  • They are in good physical and psychological health.
  • They hold realistic expectations regarding the achievable outcomes of the surgery.

What are the options?

We are world leaders in the field of liposuction, so we only offer the most up-to-date and effective techniques available.

Traditional liposuction involves the insertion of a tube into the targeted area to suction out fat cells. This method is commonly employed for the removal of small fat deposits, often under local or general anaesthesia, such as in the neck or chin regions.

Traditional liposuction is known for its high effectiveness and straightforward nature, boasting minimal potential for complications. We also utilise this technique to extract fat for fat grafting procedures.

Microliposuction is a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthesia, requiring minimal downtime. The name "microlipo" is derived from the tiny cannulas, measuring 0.9mm to 2.3mm in thickness, used to extract fat—a significant decrease from the industry-standard 6-8mm thick cannulas. This technique is particularly effective for areas like the chin, underarms, and jawline.

Laser-assisted liposuction employs lasers to heat and soften fat in the treatment area, facilitating its removal through liposuction. This process not only tightens the skin, as is common with liposuction, but also enhances skin tightening by promoting collagen production. The effects are especially noticeable in areas with thinner skin, such as the inner thighs and arms. Laser-assisted liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that results only in minimal swelling and bruising.

Power assisted liposuction (PAL) is a mechanically enhanced form of liposuction that utilises MicroAire and Lipomatic motorised cannulas. These cannulas move in multiple directions, making fat removal easier and faster. Recent studies indicate that PAL removes 30 per cent more fat than manual liposuction, with less bruising and a shorter recovery time. This technique is ideal for patients with a significant amount of fat to be removed or those who have previously undergone liposuction.

Also known as BodyJet liposuction, this method retains the benefits of traditional liposuction while excelling at targeting stubborn fat deposits, including those in the breast area. It allows for the efficient removal of larger fat areas and enables simultaneous injection of local anaesthetic fluid during the liposuction procedure.

Cellulaze is an advanced laser treatment designed to address underlying cellulite tissue and fat while simultaneously tightening the skin's surface.

Common Liposuction Treatment Areas

Liposuction for Women

This is because it offers an effective solution for addressing stubborn fat that resists conventional diet and exercise. Liposuction proves particularly impactful in contouring various areas of a woman's body, such as:

  • Abdomen: Liposuction can be tailored to target both the upper and lower sections of the abdomen. It can effectively tackle persistent fat accumulation between the belly button and rib cage. Additionally, it's a versatile method for addressing the notorious 'muffin top' in the lower abdomen.
  • Facial contouring: Liposuction is an excellent approach for addressing concerns related to cheek, chin, and neck fat. Combining liposuction with other facial or neck treatments can further enhance the overall outcome.
  • Hips and waist: For those seeking a classic 'hourglass' figure, liposuction offers a reliable way to sculpt the hips. It also effectively addresses 'love handles,' which can be resistant to diet and exercise alone.
  • Thighs: Thigh liposuction serves various purposes, from eliminating 'saddlebags' on the outer thighs to creating a 'thigh gap' by sculpting the inner thighs. It also helps contour the back of the thighs, enhancing buttock definition.
  • Knees: Liposuction can be used around the knees and targets stubborn fat deposits in this area, often combined with thigh liposuction to enhance overall appearance.
  • Back: Liposuction effectively addresses excess fat that may spill over around bra straps, a common concern among women.
  • Buttocks: Despite the popularity of larger bums, liposuction remains a sought-after treatment for this area. It can help to harmonise buttock proportions with the rest of the body and reduces the appearance of dimpling.
  • Arms: 'Bingo wings,' or loose fat in the upper arms, can be a common concern, even among those who are not overweight. Liposuction tightens and smoothes this area, rejuvenating the appearance of the arms.

Liposuction for Men

While liposuction is a well-known and popular cosmetic treatment for women, it also ranks as the fifth most popular cosmetic surgery choice among men.

Men commonly encounter unique challenges associated with fatty deposits that differ from those faced by women. Popular areas for liposuction treatment in men include:

  • Facial contouring: Men often contend with fatty deposits in the chin and neck regions.  The simpler and more precise the liposuction technique is, the better in these areas, as male skin tends to be thinner and less elastic due to facial hair.
  • Abdomen: An expanded waistline can result from either fat within the abdominal cavity or fat beneath the skin. Stomach liposuction effectively targets the subcutaneous fat, helping men achieve a more contoured midsection.
  • Flanks: Loins or flanks pose another common concern among men, often causing bulges that spill over the waistband of trousers. Liposuction is highly efficient at addressing this issue; however, older patients may experience some residual loose skin.
  • Breast reduction: Among the various liposuction procedures offered at Cadogan Clinic for men, male breast reduction stands as the most sought-after. In some cases, this procedure includes direct excision of the firm breast tissue located behind the nipple, resulting in a more enhanced chest.

Liposuction Surgeons

We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.

What to expect

Below you will find some key information to help you prepare for surgery and make necessary arrangements to ensure you have the support you need and that everything runs smoothly on the day.

Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic begins with up to two consultations conducted by one of our esteemed specialist surgeons at our renowned Chelsea premises. These consultations typically last between 30 and 60 minutes.

During these consultations, your surgeon will engage in a comprehensive discussion about your expectations for your liposuction. They will provide insights into the procedure itself, including its impact and the expected recovery process. Open and honest communication about your desired surgical outcomes is crucial for achieving the best results, so feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Your surgeon will look into your medical history and perform a thorough physical examination to ensure your suitability for the procedure. If your surgeon determines that you are a suitable candidate for the surgery, you will then have a two-week "cooling off" period to reflect on your decision before proceeding.

If you decide to move forward with the surgery after the cooling-off period, you'll return to the clinic on the day of the procedure. To prepare effectively, please consider the following steps:

  • Quit smoking: It's essential to quit smoking, as smoking can hinder skin blood flow and impede the healing process. Your doctor will recommend that you stop smoking six weeks before surgery and throughout the recovery period.
  • Adjustment medication: Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements in the week leading up to your surgery, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Avoid alcohol: Refrain from consuming alcohol for 48 hours before surgery, as alcohol can negatively affect the healing process.
  • Organise post-surgery assistance: Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after leaving the hospital.

In the six hours before surgery, abstain from food and most drinks, except for small sips of clear fluids, such as still water, black coffee, and black tea, which are allowed up to two hours before your admission to the clinic.

Upon the day of your scheduled procedure, we kindly request your arrival at least an hour before the agreed-upon surgery start time. During this time, a nurse will take your vital signs, including blood pressure and other relevant measurements. You will also have the opportunity to meet with your anesthesiologist and surgeon for final preparations and mark-ups.

The liposuction procedure itself is a straightforward process conducted under general anaesthesia, typically spanning one to three hours. It entails the insertion of a cannula into the targeted area where fat removal is needed. The cannula is gently moved back and forth to break down fat, and high-pressure suction is then employed to safely extract the loosened fat cells from your body. Thanks to the fine cannula, incision sites are exceptionally small, often measuring just several millimetres, resulting in minimal scarring.

After the procedure, you'll recover in our specialised ambulatory recovery rooms for a duration ranging from two to three hours, contingent on the procedure's scope. Your recovery is closely monitored by our expert nursing team. Once our specialists are confident in your initial recovery and deem it safe for you to return home, you will be discharged. We strongly recommend having a friend or family member accompany you on this return journey.

Upon your return home, you will gain access to our dedicated on-call nursing team, available around the clock, seven days a week. This specialised team is committed to your comfort, pain management, and addressing any immediate post-operative questions or concerns.

Recovery following liposuction is generally quick, with any residual discomfort usually subsiding within a matter of days. We advise complete rest for several days post-treatment, along with strict adherence to wearing a compression garment. This garment supports the healing process, enhances comfort, and aids in the even distribution of remaining fat cells in the treated area. To facilitate recovery, we recommend taking at least one week off from work. Additionally, we advise avoiding exposure to UV light for a period of one to four weeks to support the scarring process.

Approximately one-week post-surgery, we request your presence at our clinic for a thorough review of your incision sites by our nursing team. During this visit, we also encourage you to consult with one of our on-site aestheticians to discuss ongoing treatments aimed at promoting healing and minimising scarring, including targeted messages of the treated areas.

Finally, at the six-week mark, we'll schedule a post-procedure check-up with your surgeon to ensure your recovery is progressing as anticipated and address any remaining questions or concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Liposuction, often referred to as "lipo," is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to remove stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body.

During the procedure, fat cells are broken down using either vibrations or a high-pressure water jet. Small incisions are made to introduce a cannula, which is used to loosen and suction out the fat. Where a larger area requires treatment, multiple incisions may be necessary. Excess fluids and blood are carefully drained before the treatment site is sutured and bandaged.

After undergoing liposuction, patients are provided with a compression garment to wear for several weeks, helping to reduce swelling and bruising.

In certain cases, a tummy tuck and liposuction can be performed concurrently. While liposuction primarily targets fat removal, a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, focuses on excess skin removal, resulting in a firmer, flatter abdomen. Abdominoplasty can also address other concerns, including stretch marks, weakened abdominal muscles, and uneven fat distribution.

Abdominoplasty is known for delivering impressive results with minimal downtime.

The Cadogan Clinic was founded by Mr. Bryan Mayou, a pioneer who introduced liposuction to the UK over 40 years ago.

Today, we house the country's leading team of liposuction experts, boasting unparalleled experience in various techniques. Our extensive expertise allows us to offer diverse liposuction methods tailored to your specific needs. Currently, our offerings include Lipomatic, MicroAir, BodyJet, MicroLiposuction, and SmartLipoMPX, utilising ultrasound for liposuction.

Liposuction offers a quick, safe, and effective solution for permanently eliminating stubborn fat deposits that resist diet and exercise. Unlike weight loss, which shrinks fat cells, liposuction removes fat cells entirely.

This means that even if you gain weight in the future, the treated areas will retain their relative shape. The procedure enhances body proportions, improves clothing fit, and minimises scarring thanks to small incisions.

You should be aware that liposuction is not an effective solution to cellulite or obesity. If you need treatment for cellulite you should discuss combining procedures with your surgeon. Consult with your surgeon if you are looking for weight loss advice, where liposuction may be part of a long-term treatment plan.

Recovery following liposuction is relatively quick, thanks to the procedure's simplicity.

Recovery begins as soon you awaken from sedation, with advanced TIVA anaesthesia techniques ensuring a quicker and more comfortable wake-up experience. We recommend taking approximately one week off from work to allow for mild bruising and swelling to subside.

Pain is typically minimal, and most patients can resume their daily activities and light exercise within a few weeks, avoiding strenuous activities during this period. Wearing a compression garment for six weeks aids in reducing swelling.

Liposuction recovery is finally complete in around six weeks when results should start to be visible. Full results will take between six to 12 months.

When choosing a provider or surgeon for your liposuction procedure, safety and quality of care should be your top priorities. The level of experience that both the clinic and surgeon have with liposuction procedures is essential. However, it's undeniable that cost also plays a significant role in your decision-making process.

The cost of your liposuction surgery is a critical factor to consider when selecting a clinic. Prices can vary widely across the UK, influenced by several key factors such as reputation, experience, and the quality of the clinic, surgeon and nursing staff, as well as the quality and track record of the pre-and post-operative care.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we exclusively collaborate with top-tier surgeons and nursing staff at our specialised facilities in Chelsea. Our primary focus is on delivering safe, high-quality surgery and providing exceptional value for our patients.

The cost of a liposuction procedure at the Cadogan Clinic starts at £3,950 for one area. For liposuction in two areas, the cost is £6,000, and for three areas, it's £6,900.

Please note that the prices quoted online are approximate and subject to confirmation during an in-person consultation. The cost may vary depending on whether you choose local or general anaesthesia.

The Cadogan Clinic offers financing options through various reputable high-street providers. Our patient advisors can assist you in finding a trusted finance provider accepted by the clinic.

It's important to mention that liposuction costs in the UK are exempt from VAT as they are considered medical procedures.

Liposuction can be performed under local or general anaesthesia. While local anaesthesia may be suitable for smaller areas like the neck, it can be less comfortable and more time-consuming.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we prefer Total Intravenous Anaesthesia (TIVA) for most procedures. TIVA ensures a more comfortable and quicker wake-up experience, allowing patients to return home on the same day.

Both men and women undergo liposuction each year to achieve various goals. Liposuction can effectively address gynecomastia in men and common areas like the stomach, hips, and thighs in women.

Consider liposuction if:

  • You have stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise.
  • You seek improved body proportion and contour.
  • Your skin is in good condition.
  • You have realistic expectations.

Liposuction may not be suitable if you have loose, sagging skin or require significant weight loss. Cellulite treatment may also require a different approach.

While liposuction is the preferred method for substantial fat reduction, alternatives exist. These include:

  • Surgical Fat Excision (effective for smaller areas)
  • Chemical Injections (multiple treatments, limited control)
  • Non-Surgical Options (less effective, limited results)

Liposuction scars are minimal due to the small incisions used during the procedure. At the Cadogan Clinic, we prioritise minimising these scars by using as few incisions as possible and employing gentle techniques to minimise trauma.

For those prone to severe scarring, we also offer a comprehensive scar management program utilising high-energy devices and lasers.

While liposuction is a relatively low-risk procedure, it's essential to be aware of potential side effects, including numbness, infection, embolism, oedema, and allergic reactions.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we have over 40 years of experience in liposuction and take extensive precautions to manage these risks. Our 24/7 nursing on-call service is available for any post-surgery concerns.

Selecting an experienced and qualified surgeon is crucial for your liposuction procedure. A good surgeon will provide in-depth explanations of the procedure, recovery, and potential risks. They should have a portfolio of liposuction before-and-after photos and offer patient testimonials. Your surgeon should prioritise your physical and psychological well-being.

Ensure your surgeon is a registered doctor or surgeon on the General Medical Council (GMC) online register. Membership in professional associations like BAAPS or BAPRAS may also be indicative of expertise, but it's essential to consider the surgeon's qualifications and experience.
