What is Penis Enlargement surgery?

Penis Enlargement, also known as a Penoplasty, is a procedure which is carried out to increase the length or width (girth) of the penis. It typically adds one to two inches to the length of the penis. Many patients opt to have their girth and length increased at the same procedure.

Penile Elongation involves releasing a ligament, resulting in the penis moving forward and dropping down, adding length to the penis when it is in its flaccid state. To increase the length of the penis in its erect state, after the surgery, the patient will be given a penile extender, which will help to increase the length of an erection over the following 12 months.

Fat Transfer can be used to increase the girth of the penis. Penis Girth Surgery involves fat being extracted from other areas of the body, using Liposuction before it is injected into the penis, adding more volume.

Some men also undergo a Circumcision (foreskin removal) at the same time as their Penile Augmentation surgery as the increase in girth achieved through surgery can make the foreskin feel overly tight.

The results of Penis Enlargement surgery are permanent, and it is the most effective way to increase the size of your penis. Although non-surgical options for Penis Enlargement are available, they are often risky, and don’t deliver the desired results.

Why do people have Penis Enlargement?

Men choose to have Penis Enlargement surgery because they are dissatisfied with the length or girth of their penis. This dissatisfaction can lead to self-consciousness about their appearance, which may prevent them from forming intimate relationships.

Although sexual intercourse may or may not improve following Penis Enlargement, a boost in confidence can help to make sex a more relaxed and pleasurable experience improving intimate relationships and overall quality of life.

This self-consciousness can also lead to men avoiding certain activities, such as swimming and going to the gym, or other activities that involve using a communal changing room or wearing tight fitting, or revealing, clothing. Often these feelings stem from insecurity, rather than any physical problem with the size of their penis.

Sometimes having a Micropenis, a congenital condition where the penis measures less than three inches when erect, can make penetrative sex impossible. This can also occur in men who have a condition called Buried Penis. This is an acquired problem most commonly caused by obesity where the penis is concealed by abdominal fat or skin. Penis Enlargement can help with both of these concerns.

Who is suitable for Penis Enlargement Surgery?

Your consultant will assess your suitability for Penis Enlargement during your consultation at our award-winning clinic, based in Chelsea, London. During this appointment, they will discuss your concerns, as well as your general medical and mental health history. They will examine your penis, and make sure you are fit and well for a general anaesthetic surgery.

Cadogan Clinic’s consultants consider individuals fit for Penis Enlargement, if:

  • They are physically and psychologically fit and healthy
  • They are dissatisfied with the length or girth of their penis
  • They have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with surgery

You may also be experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Low self-esteem or a lack of self-confidence
  • Depression or anxiety
  • Difficulty forming and maintaining intimate relationships
  • Difficulty having penetrative sex
  • A congenital condition such as a Micropenis or Buried Penis

What Does Penis Enlargement Involve?

Penis Enlargement surgery is carried out at the Cadogan Clinic as a day case procedure, meaning you will be discharged on the same day as your surgery to recover in the comfort of your own home.

To carry out a Penis Extension, your surgeon will make an incision at the base of your penis to gain access to the suspensory ligament, which is attached to the pubic bone. They will then proceed to partially divide the suspensory ligament (known as Ligamentolysis) allowing the penis to move forward and down. This allows the penis to gain around one to two inches in length. A silicone buffer will be inserted to ensure that the separated ends of the ligament do not reattach, making the results of the procedure permanent.

Although the penis appears longer because its position has been changed, the procedure does not actually alter the length of the penis – it allows more of the penis to be visible. This increase in length can only be seen when the penis is flaccid. Once you have recovered from surgery, a penile extender can be worn for one-two hours each day for 12 months, adding about one inch in length to an erect penis when used as directed.

If the aim is to introduce girth to the penis, this is done using Fat Transfer. Also known as a fat graft or lipofilling, Fat Transfer is a surgical treatment which involves moving fat from one part of the body to another. Liposuction is used to extract unwanted excess fat from areas of the body, such as the thighs or abdomen. This fat is then treated before being injected into the penis. Fat Transfer can achieve an increase of 1-2 inches to the girth of the penis, when both flaccid and erect.

After Penis Girth Surgery, you may wish to consider Circumcision as another part of your Penis Enhancement to remove your foreskin. The increase in girth can make the foreskin feel overly tight, which can cause difficulty or discomfort when urinating or during sexual intercourse.

What to Expect During Your Penis Enlargement

Below you will find some key information to help you prepare for surgery and make necessary arrangements to ensure you have the support you need and that everything runs smoothly on the day.

Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic will start with a consultation with one of our leading specialist penis enhancement surgery consultants at our award-winning premises in Chelsea. These consultations typically last between 30 and 60 minutes.

During your consultation, your surgeon will ask about your expectations for penis surgery and discuss your concerns. They will also talk about what will happen during the procedure and how the procedure will affect you.

It is important that you are open and honest about what you hope to achieve through Penile Elongation to help your surgeon achieve your desired outcomes. Your surgeon will be happy to answer any questions you may have throughout your consultation. You may wish to write your questions down before attending the consultation, so you are able to get the most from your appointment. Having established what you want to achieve from your Penis Enhancement, and what is possible given your anatomy, and your concerns, key measurements will be taken, and standard clinical photography will be recorded. Your medical history will be discussed, and a physical examination will be carried out.

If your surgeon feels you are suitable for Penis Enlargement, you are then invited to consider whether you would like to proceed with your surgery or not following a two-week cooling off period. During this time, you will be in contact with your dedicated surgical patient advisor who will be able to help you with any questions, as well as explaining the final price of Penoplasty surgery, and the dates that are available.

In the weeks running up to your Penile Augmentation surgery, you will be asked to prepare to ensure you are ready for your procedure:

  • If you smoke or vape, your surgeon will ask you to quit, at least 6 weeks before your procedure can take place. Smoking or vaping can have a negative effect on your body’s healing ability. You may be asked to quit smoking or vaping before your surgery date can be confirmed.
  • You should stop taking any anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen or painkillers such as aspirin for 5 days before surgery. Your surgical team may also ask you to stop taking herbal supplements as well. This lowers your risk of bleeding, which can affect your surgery and your healing.
  • You should avoid drinking alcohol for 48 hours before your surgery. Alcohol can increase inflammation within the body which may impact your surgery and recovery.
  • You will need to organise a chaperone to come and collect your following your Penile Elongation. They must be a friend or family member, over the age of 18, and be able to drive you themselves or accompany you in a taxi. You must not drive yourself.
  • In the 6 hours before you arrive at the clinic, you cannot consume any solid food, juice or milk and you can only have sips of water, tea or coffee without milk up to 2 hours before you arrive.

Following these steps will ensure your procedure and the healing go as smoothly as possible.

When you arrive at the clinic, one of our specialist nurses will greet you and accompany you to the pre-operative area. They will carry out some health checks, including measuring your blood pressure, heart rate and temperature. You will be asked to change into a surgical gown and compression stockings and given a locker to keep your possessions. Your surgeon and anaesthetist will come and speak with you and answer any final questions, before you are taken into the theatre.

You will be given a general anaesthetic to put you to sleep, so you will not be able to feel any pain during the procedure. All general anaesthetic procedures at Cadogan Clinic are carried out using Total Intravenous Anaesthetic (TIVA) which has a lower risk of post-operative nausea and sickness, making your initial recovery more comfortable.

Following your Penis Enlargement surgery, you will recover in our ambulatory recovery rooms. You may feel a little drowsy, but this often wears off within a few hours.  Once you have had something to eat and drink, and our specialist nursing team are happy that your initial recovery is complete, you will be allowed to leave the clinic with a friend or family member. Someone should stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.

You should expect to take up to a week off work following your Penile Enhancement. All sexual activity (including masturbation) contact sports and strenuous exercise should be avoided for six weeks after surgery. Once this healing period has finished, you may start using the penile extender, if appropriate.

You will have two follow up appointments at the clinic, following your surgery. The first will be a week after your procedure, with our nurses, to assess your incisions and check you are healing well. The second will be with your surgeon, 6 weeks following your penis surgery to discuss your recovery and results.

Our on-call specialist nursing service is open 24/7 during your recovery period to help with any questions or queries that you may have.

It is important that you follow all the aftercare instructions issued by your doctor. Failure to do so may impact on your recovery and the final result.

We are deeply invested in ensuring that every step of your surgical journey with us is as informative and reassuring to you as it can be. This article outlines what you can expect at each stage of the journey

The Patient Journey

Frequently Asked Questions

It takes around six weeks to fully recover from Penis Enlargement surgery. This includes Circumcision if you opted to have this procedure alongside your surgical Penis Enlargement.

You may wish to take up to a week off work following your Penile Elongation, but if you have a sedentary job, for example, then you may find that you can return within two or three days. Avoid heavy lifting for four weeks and avoid sex, contact sports and the gym for six weeks to allow for healing and prevent injury or infection.

If you are choosing to use a Penis Elongator following your procedure, this will take 12 months of consistent use following your recovery.

Your surgeon will advise waiting at least 6 weeks following your Penile Enhancement before you resume sexual activity. This is important to prevent injury or damaging your incisions. You should wait until you feel completely recovered and comfortable (even if this takes longer than 6 weeks) and if you aren’t sure, speak with your surgeon.

Here at the Cadogan Clinic, our Penis Enlargement surgeons are highly skilled and experts in their field. Many men come away from surgery satisfied with their new-look penis.

Penis Extension surgery can add an extra inch or two on to your penis length, but the exact length can never be guaranteed. It is important that when you choose to undergo this surgery you have realistic expectations as to what can be achieved depending on your anatomy and concerns.

Sometimes, an alternative treatment, such as Phalloplasty, may be more appropriate. Your surgeon will discuss the options with you at your initial consultation.

There are several non-surgical Penis Enlargement options. However, these are often ineffective and can even lead to long lasting damage to your penis.

You may have seen supplements and lotions on sale, particularly online, which claim to give you a larger penis. These may contain vitamins, herbs or hormones. However, there is no scientific evidence to demonstrate that these remedies work.

Another Penis Enhancement treatment that you may have seen advertised online is a vacuum pump, or penis pump. This device draws blood into the penis, causing it to swell and look larger. But the effect is only temporary and if used incorrectly, or for a prolonged period, this can permanently damage delicate elastic tissue in the penis. If this tissue is damaged, then you will find that your erections are less firm.

Specific exercises, designed to force blood from the base to the tip of the penis, have not been proven to work either. These may also lead to the penis becoming disfigured or cause pain or discomfort. A stretching device may be used to help add an inch to an erect penis. However this takes a long time, some men find it uncomfortable, and it does not always work.

Penis Enlargement surgery is the safest and most effective way to improve the length and girth of your penis permanently.

It is common to experience swelling, pain and redness in the days following Penile Elongation surgery. Other risks and side effects may include:

  • Developing a bend or kink in the penis
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Loss of sensation in the penis
  • Needing further surgery which may leave the penis shorter

General complications from any type of surgery include pain, scarring, blood clots (deep vein thrombosis) and an adverse reaction to the anaesthetic.

Penis Enlargement surgery cost in the UK varies from around £9,000 to £14,000 upwards. Pricing will depend on a number of factors:

  • The exact combination of procedures being carried out
  • The surgical techniques used The location of the clinic – Capital cities tend to have higher prices generally than other areas
  • The experience and expertise of your surgeon
  • Pre-operative assessments – Are these included into your surgical package, or are they an extra cost?
  • The aftercare package provided – It is important to make sure you understand how your aftercare is planned, ahead of your surgery to ensure you achieve your desired results
