What is Otoplasty Surgery?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure which reshapes and repositions the ears, addressing many common ear concerns which can affect confidence and self-image.

The term Otoplasty covers a wide range of procedures that address different aspects of ear appearance and form:

  • Pinnaplasty: Also known as Ear Pinning, Pinnaplasty pins the ears back to address over-projection in the concha and antihelix
  • Ear Reduction: Ear Reduction involves reshaping and resizing the external part of the ear, known as the pinna, including the earlobe
  • Cauliflower Ear Treatment: A combination of non-surgical draining and ear reshaping to address the deformation of the ear cartilage resulting from trauma to the ear, known as cauliflower ear

Cadogan Clinic has brought together a team of the UK’s best Consultant Facial Surgeons, who have performed thousands of Otoplasty procedures. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reports that in 2025, Otoplasty was the fourth most popular facial surgery among men and women in the UK.

The ears are a prominent facial feature, and their appearance can be affected by a number of factors:

  • Genetics
  • Ageing
  • Injury
  • Piercing

Due to their visibility, concerns affecting the ears can have a significant impact on confidence, making individuals feel self-conscious.

Otoplasty is an umbrella term covering a range of procedures which address ear size, shape and position, improving confidence and quality of life.

What Happens After Your Otoplasty at Cadogan Clinic?

Your initial recovery following an Otoplasty at Cadogan Clinic will vary slightly, depending on whether the procedure has been carried out under local or general anaesthetic.

If your Otoplasty has been performed under local anaesthetic, you will remain in a consultation room for around 1 hour after your procedure, to allow our dedicated nurses to monitor you, and ensure you are well to go home. Once you are ready, they will provide you with your written recovery and aftercare instructions, and any medication your medical team has prescribed, before discharging you.

For patients whose Otoplasty procedure has been performed under general anaesthetic, you will first be taken to our recovery ward, where our specialist surgical nurses will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature while you wake up from the anaesthetic. Once you are awake and comfortable, you will be taken to your own room in our ambulatory ward, where you will have something to eat and drink and be prepared for discharge. When you are ready, the nurses will provide you with written recovery and aftercare instructions, any medication you require, and your chaperone will come to collect you.

Whether your Otoplasty procedure has been carried out under either local or general anaesthetic, your initial recovery will be in the care of our specialist nursing team, who will make sure you are comfortable and ready to be discharged.

Otoplasty Recovery Timeline

Otoplasty and Ear Pinning recovery time varies slightly between patients, depending on a number of factors, which your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss with you ahead of your procedure:

  • Type of surgery: Recovery times between different types of Otoplasty surgery may be different
  • Extent: More involved Otoplasty procedures may involve a longer recovery period
  • Personal factors: Your healing following Otoplasty surgery can be affected by underlying medical conditions and other health and lifestyle factors

Although it isn’t possible to anticipate a patient’s exact Otoplasty recovery day by day, there are several healing milestones to anticipate as part of the Otoplasty recovery timeline. Ahead of your procedure, your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss any personal health or lifestyle factors that may affect your Otoplasty or Ear Pinning Surgery recovery.

2-3 Days After Your Otoplasty

In the first few days after your Otoplasty procedure:

  • Mobility: Otoplasty surgery is unlikely to affect your mobility, but it is important to move carefully and avoid any sudden head and neck movements
  • Swelling and bruising: Following an Otoplasty, it is normal for the ears and surrounding area to be swollen and bruised
  • Garments: Depending on the Otoplasty procedure you have undergone, your surgeon may ask you to wear a compression headband for a few weeks to protect your ears and maintain their new position
  • Discomfort: You should expect some slight discomfort in the first few days after surgery, which may include a tight, numb or itching sensation. Your medical team will prescribe any medication you may need to manage this

1-2 Weeks After Your Otoplasty

Most patients feel they are starting to return to normal around 1-2 weeks after Otoplasty surgery:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your first follow-up appointment around 7 days after your Otoplasty with our specialist surgical nurses. They will remove your sutures, check your incisions and answer any questions you may have
  • Swelling and bruising: Any swelling and bruising around your ears will start to resolve
  • Continuing recovery and aftercare: You should continue to wear your compression headband as instructed and keep the surgical area clean and dry

1 Month After Your Otoplasty

1 month after your Otoplasty procedure, you can expect to be at least close to full recovery, in most cases:

  • Exercise and activity: Depending on your surgeon’s instructions, you may be able to resume gentle exercise at this stage. However, you should still avoid strenuous activities
  • Swelling and bruising: If not completely healed, any swelling and bruising should now be almost completely resolved
  • Garment: Your surgeon may instruct you to either reduce the amount you wear your Otoplasty headband or allow you to stop wearing it entirely

6-8 Weeks After Your Otoplasty

After 6-8 weeks, your initial Otoplasty healing should be complete, and you will be enjoying your results:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your second post-operative appointment at Cadogan Clinic, with your Consultant Facial Surgeon, to discuss your Otoplasty results and recovery
  • Exercise and activity: Unless your surgeon provides personalised guidance, you should be able to resume most exercise and activity from this point
  • Garment: If you are still wearing your compression Otoplasty headband, in most cases, you should be able to stop wearing it

3 Months After Your Otoplasty

3 months after your Otoplasty surgery, most patients are entirely healed and recovered:

  • Scarring: Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will have been careful to place their incisions in a concealed area. But your scars after Otoplasty will continue to fade over time
  • Ongoing aftercare support: You will have 24-hour access to Cadogan Clinic’s specialist surgical nurses by phone for up to 2 years after your Otoplasty procedure if you have any questions or require support

Your specialist Otoplasty surgeon at Cadogan Clinic will prepare you for any personal aspects of your recovery period; however, there are many typical recovery points that you can expect.

Otoplasty Recovery Tips

During your Otoplasty recovery, it is crucial to follow your surgeon’s instructions to prevent complications and achieve your desired results.

Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss what to expect from your Otoplasty or Ear Pinning Surgery recovery during your initial consultation and will also continue to support you in the run-up to your procedure, ensuring you are fully prepared.

What You Should Do During Otoplasty Recovery

  • Wear your Otoplasty headband: If your surgeon has asked you to wear an Otoplasty recovery headband, it is important to wear it as instructed to control swelling and protect your ears in their new position
  • Keep your head elevated: Sleeping on your back, slightly upright, will help to reduce swelling and aid healing
  • Protect your ears: Once your dressings have been removed, it is important to be gentle around your ears, including being gentle when pulling shirts or jumpers over your head, and brushing your hair

What You Shouldn’t Do During Otoplasty Recovery

  • Wear jewellery or glasses: To protect your ears, it is important to not place any pressure on them too early in your recovery, including wearing glasses or earrings. If you are a glasses-wearer, your surgeon will discuss options with you during your consultation
  • Strenuous exercise: Resuming strenuous exercise too soon may increase the risk of complications developing after your Otoplasty procedure. Activities such as weightlifting and contact sports may need to be paused for a few months to protect your ears
  • Tanning: While the area is healing, it will be more sensitive to UV light from the sun and from tanning beds, which may lead to the scars darkening and being more visible. It is essential to wear sunscreen and keep the area covered during your Otoplasty recovery to optimise your healing

At Cadogan Clinic, your surgeon will discuss the best Otoplasty recovery tips during your consultation to prevent complications and achieve the best results following your procedure.

Is Otoplasty Painful?

It is normal to experience some discomfort in the first few days following Otoplasty surgery, which is manageable with standard pain relief medication. Most patients experience some tightness, itching and numbness.

As with any surgical procedure, you should expect a degree of swelling and bruising after Otoplasty surgery, which may take around 2 weeks to fully settle. Wearing your compression headband and following your surgeon’s recovery instructions will aid the healing process.

It is normal for Otoplasty recovery to involve some slight discomfort, but this is usually easily managed and resolves within a few days. Your medical team at Cadogan Clinic will support you throughout your recovery period to ensure you are comfortable and achieve the best results.

What Otoplasty Recovery Support Does Cadogan Clinic Provide?

All Otoplasty surgical packages at Cadogan Clinic include full coverage recovery and aftercare support. Comprehensive aftercare is essential after any procedure to safeguard patients and prevent complications from developing.

When you are discharged after your Otoplasty procedure, you will be given the phone number for Cadogan Clinic’s specialist surgical nursing team, who will provide 24-hour recovery support if you have any concerns or questions.

In the weeks following your Otoplasty surgery, you will have at least 2 post-operative appointments with our nursing team and your Consultant Facial Surgeon to monitor your recovery and results. These appointments will be booked at the same time as your surgery to allow you to plan ahead. It is essential to attend your post-operative appointments in person to ensure your medical team has the most accurate information about your recovery.

Cadogan Clinic prioritises providing the best quality aftercare support following all Otoplasty procedures to maintain patient safeguarding and high-quality surgical outcomes.
