What is a Brow Lift?

A Brow Lift is a surgical procedure which involves lifting the position of the eyebrows to increase the space between the upper eyelid and the eyebrow. This achieves an open appearance to the upper face, increases the field of vision and improves facial expression.

Cadogan Clinic is a specialist surgical hospital, based in Chelsea, London, working with a team of the best Consultant Facial Surgeons in the UK. Our Clinic’s leadership have been rated Outstanding by the CQC, and 100% of our surgical patients would recommend us to their family and friends.

The brow area can be affected by several factors, including ageing, genetics, weight loss, and conditions such as facial palsy. The most common concern affecting the brow area is brow ptosis, causing the eyebrows to drop, resulting in a heavy and unbalanced appearance.

A Brow Lift can be combined with other procedures such as Facelift or Blepharoplasty to enhance the final results. Between 2024 and 2025, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported a 27% increase in the number of Brow Lift procedures performed in the UK, showing that relatively small, but highly transformative procedures are increasingly popular.

Cadogan Clinic’s team of surgical advisors are experts in supporting patients throughout their surgical journey, and are available to answer your questions and match you with one of our UK-leading Consultant Facial Surgeons.

A Brow Lift is a surgical procedure which increases the distance between the upper eyelid and the eyebrow, achieving a more open eye appearance and enhancing facial expression and balance.

When you are ready, you will be given a written copy of your Brow Lift recovery instructions, along with any medication you have been prescribed. Your chaperone will collect you and you will continue your recovery at home.

Cadogan Clinic’s specialist surgical team will supervise you throughout your initial recovery following a Brow Lift surgery, to make sure you are comfortable and fully prepared to be discharged.

Brow Lift Recovery Timeline

Brow Lift Recovery time can be different for each patient and there are several factors which influence your personal healing time. During your consultation, your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss anything personal to you which might affect your Brow Lift healing time.

  • Type of Brow Lift: There are several types of Brow Lift to address different concerns. For example, Endoscopic Brow Lift recovery time will be less long than a Coronal Brow Lift as it is less invasive
  • Extent of surgery: Brow Lift procedures with more dramatic results may require a longer recovery period
  • Personal factors: Various health and lifestyle factors, and your personal medical history can affect Brow Lift healing and recovery time

Ahead of your procedure, your Consultant Facial Surgeon may not be able to predict your exact Brow Lift recovery day by day; however, there are specific recovery milestones which you can expect to reach throughout your Brow Lift recovery.

2-3 Days After Your Brow Lift

In the initial stages of your Brow Lift recovery:

  • Swelling and bruising: Brow Lift swelling and bruising around the upper face is a normal part of healing and recovery
  • Mobility: Brow Lift surgery is unlikely to affect your mobility, but you should still move carefully and avoid any sudden head and neck movements
  • Discomfort: It is normal to feel some tightness, numbness, tingling or itching during the early stages of Brow Lift healing

1-2 Weeks After Your Brow

Most patients are usually starting to return to their normal daily activities in the couple of weeks after a Brow Lift:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your first post-operative appointment with our specialist surgical nurses to discuss your initial Brow Lift recovery
  • Returning to work: Depending on their job, most people return to work after a Brow Lift within around 7-10 days
  • Swelling and bruising: Your Brow Lift swelling and bruising will have peaked, and may have started to resolve
  • Scarring: Your Brow Lift scar will still be very fresh, and you may still have dressings covering it. Your personal medical team will provide aftercare instructions to improve its visibility

1 Month After Your Brow Lift

In most cases, Brow Lift recovery is almost complete around 1 month after surgery:

  • Exercise: Depending on your surgeon’s instructions, and any personal recovery factors, you may be able to resume gentle exercise at this point, but it is still important to avoid anything overly strenuous
  • Swelling and bruising: At this point, you should expect your Brow Lift swelling to be almost entirely resolved
  • Scarring: Your Brow Lift scars will be continuing to heal and fade

6-8 Weeks After Your Brow Lift

Your Brow Lift recovery should be largely complete 6-8 weeks after your surgery, and you will be enjoying your results:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your second post-operative appointment at Cadogan Clinic, with your Consultant Facial Surgeon to discuss your Brow Lift recovery and results
  • Exercise: Unless your surgeon has provided personalised advice to the contrary, you should be able to resume most exercise and activity at this point
  • Continued recovery and aftercare: Your surgeon will continue to provide advice and support on your Brow Lift aftercare

3 Months After Your Brow Lift

3 months after your Brow Lift surgery, you should be entirely healed and recovered:

  • Scarring: Your Brow Lift scar will continue to fade over time
  • Ongoing aftercare support: Cadogan Clinic’s specialist surgical nurses provide Brow Lift aftercare support via their 24-hour phone line for up to 2 years after your procedure

There are several stages and milestones throughout the Brow Lift healing process which you should prepare for ahead of your surgery. Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss any personal aspects of your recovery which you need to bear in mind during your consultation.

Brow Lift Recovery Tips

During recovery from Brow Lift surgery, it is essential to follow your surgeon’s recovery and aftercare instructions to prevent complications and achieve your desired results.

Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss what you should expect during your Brow Lift recovery, during your consultation, but you will also receive wrap-around support from your personal surgical advisor and pre-operative team to ensure you feel fully prepared.

What You Should Do During Brow Lift Recovery

  • Sleeping position: Your surgeon will ask you to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated for around the first 2 weeks after your Brow Lift
  • Cold compresses: Applying a cold compress to the upper face, being careful to avoid your incisions can help to reduce bruising and swelling after Brow Lift surgery
  • Take prescribed medication: Take any medication your medical team has prescribed to manage discomfort and aid healing
  • Be communicative: Your Consultant Facial Surgeon, and Cadogan Clinic’s expert surgical nurses are on hand to support you throughout your Brow Lift recovery. It is important to stay in touch with them, especially if you have any questions

What You Shouldn’t Do During Brow Lift Recovery

  • Strenuous activity and exercise: Avoid any exercise or strenuous activities, such as heavy lifting, to prevent strain from being placed on your incisions
  • Sunlight and heat: Protect your incisions from direct sunlight and avoid hot showers and saunas to help your Brow Lift scar to fade
  • Cosmetic products: Avoid applying makeup or skincare around the incision sites until cleared by your surgeon
  • Eating a high salt and sugar diet: Excessive salt and sugar may impact healing time and the quality of the final result due to dehydration and collagen breakdown

Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will provide you with comprehensive Brow Lift aftercare advice ahead of your procedure to allow you to fully prepare and ensure your recovery is smooth.

Is a Brow Lift Painful?

It is normal to experience some discomfort during the early stages of Brow Lift recovery, but most patients find that this can be managed with standard pain relief medication.

Sensations that patients experience during the Brow Lift healing process include tightness, numbness, itching and tingling. In the vast majority of cases, these will be short-term, resolving within a couple of weeks, and if you are concerned about any long-term side effects, it is important to speak with your surgeon and nurses.

Bruising and swelling after Brow Lift around the upper face are normal during the early stages of recovery and healing. This can take 2-3 weeks to fully resolve and your surgeon may recommend techniques such as a cold compress to accelerate healing.

Some discomfort after any surgical procedure is normal, but if you notice any concerning signs, or are worried you can contact the Clinic at any time for further Brow Lift aftercare support.

Any slight discomfort after a Brow Lift is normal and usually easily managed. Your personal medical team at Cadogan Clinic will be on hand to assist you throughout your Brow Lift recovery to ensure you achieve your desired results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full Brow Lift recovery time typically takes 4-6 weeks. This can vary depending on personal medical and lifestyle factors, the type of Brow Lift surgery, and the extent of the procedure.

In cases of more extensive surgery or certain techniques, recovery time for Brow Lift may be up to 8 weeks, but your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation, so you know what to expect and can prepare in advance.

During your recovery from Brow Lift surgery, it is essential to follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions to prevent complications and ensure you achieve the best results.

Swelling after Brow Lift surgery is a normal part of the healing process and visible swelling typically lasts around 2 weeks. In some cases, patients may experience mild, residual swelling in the deeper layers of tissue for 3-6 months, but your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss whether you should expect this ahead of your Brow Lift surgery.

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated, avoiding salty foods and applying a cool compress (in line with your surgeon’s recovery instructions) can help to reduce any Brow Lift swelling, but it is also important to remember that every patient will heal at a different rate.

The location of your Brow Lift scars will depend on the type of Brow Lift you have undergone:

  • Endoscopic Brow Lift: Scarring is concealed within the hairline
  • Coronal Brow Lift: Incisions and scars are concealed behind the hairline across the top of the head
  • Hairline Brow Lift: Scars are located at the top of the forehead
  • Temporal Brow Lift: Scarring is concealed in the temples within the hairline

The type of Brow Lift your surgeon recommends will depend on your concerns and desired results, including the best placement for any scarring. Cadogan Clinic’s expert Consultant Facial Surgeons provide comprehensive aftercare support to ensure your Brow Lift scars fade fully to hide any signs of surgery.

After a Brow Lift, you will be asked to sleep on your side, with your head slightly elevated, for around 2-3 weeks. After this point, as long as your incisions are healing well you should be able to return to sleeping on your side. It is important to use a pillowcase made from soft breathable fabric to reduce friction on the area which may slow the Brow Lift healing process.
