What is a Lip Lift?

Lip Lift surgery is a popular procedure which adjusts the shape and proportions of the lips and mouth and is often performed as an alternative to Lip Filler treatment for patients who wish to achieve permanent results.

Cadogan Clinic is a UK-leading surgical centre of excellence based in Chelsea, London. Our specialist Consultant Facial Surgeons are experts in performing Lip Lift surgery, and 100% of Cadogan Clinic’s surgical patients would recommend the Clinic to their family and friends.

There are several types of Lip Lift surgery to address different concerns and achieve different results:

  • Bullhorn Lip Lift: The most popular type of Lip Lift, a Bullhorn Lip Lift involves removing a small amount of skin from between the upper lip and the nose, increasing the visible height of the upper lip
  • Corner Lip Lift: By removing small amounts of skin from above the outer lip corners, downturned lips are corrected, giving the face a more open and friendly expression
  • Lower Lip Lift: For patients concerned about the shape or proportions of their lower lip, a Lower Lip Lift involves removing small amounts of skin from beneath the lower lip to improve volume and visibility

Many patients choose to combine a Lip Lift with other facial procedures, such as Facelift or Neck Lift to enhance the final results.

Lip Augmentation procedures are increasingly popular, mainly thanks to their transformative impact on overall facial appearance, without being an especially arduous procedure. In 2025, the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS) reported that Lip Enhancements were the tenth most popular procedures globally. In 2022, the global Lip Augmentation market was valued at $6.4 billion, and was projected to increase to $11.61 billion by 2030.

If you are considering Lip Lift surgery, Cadogan Clinic’s team of specialist surgical advisors are on hand to discuss your questions and match you with the best Consultant Facial Surgeon to perform your procedure.

Lip Lift is a surgical procedure which enhances the shape and proportions of the lips and mouth to address a range of concerns, including expression, injury and the natural effects of ageing.

Lip Lift Recovery Timeline

There are several factors that influence the healing time for Lip Lift, and your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss anything that may impact your personal recovery during your consultation.

  • Type of Lip Lift: Lip surgery recovery time may vary depending on the surgical techniques involved
  • Scope of surgery: More dramatic Lip Lift procedures may require a longer recovery period
  • Personal factors: Underlying medical conditions and various health and lifestyle factors can affect Lip Lift recovery times

Although your Consultant Facial surgeon won’t be able to predict your exact Lip Lift recovery day by day, ahead of your procedure, there are several predictable healing stages that you can expect as part of your Lip Lift healing timeline. To prepare you for your Lip Lift recovery, your surgeon will assess and discuss any factors that may affect your timeline during your consultation.

2-3 Days After Your Lip Lift

During your early, initial Lip Lift recovery:

  • Mobility: You should be able to move around normally following a Lip Lift, but it is important to be cautious and avoid sudden head and neck movements
  • Swelling and bruising: It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising around your mouth following a Lip Lift
  • Discomfort: You should expect to feel some slight discomfort in the first few days after Lip Lift surgery. This may include tightness, numbness, tingling and itching, which, if necessary, your medical team will prescribe medication to manage

1-2 Weeks After Your Lip Lift

In the couple of weeks after Lip Lift surgery, most patients begin to feel normal again:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your first follow-up appointment 7-10 days after your Lip Lift surgery with Cadogan Clinic’s specialist nursing team. They will remove your sutures and discuss how to take care of your dressings going forward
  • Returning to work: Following a Lip Lift, most patients are able to return to work within 7-10 days. If you have an especially physical or strenuous job, this may be extended slightly
  • Swelling and bruising: Lip Lift swelling will have peaked, and will be starting to improve
  • Scarring: After 1 week, your Lip Lift scar will still be visible. Your surgeon will provide aftercare instructions to improve its appearance and visibility

1 Month After Your Lip Lift

For most patients, their Lip Lift recovery is close to complete after around 1 month:

  • Exercise and activity: Depending on your personal circumstances and your surgeon’s instructions, you may be able to resume gentle exercise around 1 month after your Lip Lift. However, it is still important to avoid anything overly strenuous
  • Swelling and bruising: You should expect your Lip Lift swelling to be almost, if not completely, healed
  • Scarring: At this stage, your Lip Lift scar may still be visible; however, it will continue to improve over time

6-8 Weeks After Your Lip Lift

Your initial Lip Lift recovery should be complete by 6-8 weeks, and you will be enjoying your results:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your second follow-up appointment at Cadogan Clinic, with your Consultant Facial Surgeon to discuss your Lip Lift results and recovery
  • Exercise and activity: Most patients will be able to resume exercise and activity at this stage after Lip Lift surgery, unless your surgeon has provided specific advice
  • Continued recovery and aftercare: Depending on how your Lip Lift scarring has developed, your surgeon may provide ongoing advice to ensure it continues to heal successfully

3 Months After Your Lip Lift

3 months after Lip Lift surgery, you should be entirely healed and recovered:

  • Scarring: Your Lip Lift scarring will continue to improve and fade over time
  • Ongoing aftercare support: Cadogan Clinic’s specialist nursing phone line is open 24 hours a day, offering you assistance for up to 2 years after your Lip Lift procedure

The Lip Lift healing process includes several stages and milestones which can be anticipated ahead of your surgery. Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will prepare you for any specific personal aspects of your recovery to bear in mind.

Lip Lift Recovery Tips

One of the most important aspects of Lip Lift recovery, to prevent complications and ensure you achieve the best results, is to closely follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions.

Your Consultant Facial Surgeon will discuss what you should expect during your Lip Lift recovery at your consultation, but you will also receive support from your personal surgical advisor and the pre-operative team to make sure you are fully prepared.

What You Should Do During Lip Lift Recovery

  • Sleeping position: It is important to sleep on your back, with your head slightly elevated to aid Lip Lift healing and reduce swelling
  • Eating soft foods: Especially during your early Lip Lift recovery, you should prioritise eating soft foods to protect your incisions and reduce strain around your mouth
  • Cold compresses: Holding a cold compress on the surgical area a few times a day can help to reduce swelling
  • Wound care: As the mouth is an area which can easily become contaminated with food, it is essential to keep your incisions and dressings clean and dry to prevent complications

What You Shouldn’t Do During Lip Lift Recovery

  • Strenuous exercise and activity: Strenuous exercise and activity, such as heavy lifting, can place strain on the incisions, which may result in complications and slow healing
  • Tanning: The skin is especially fragile during healing, and exposure to UV light from the sun or tanning beds may result in Lip Lift scarring becoming darker and more visible. As the mouth and lips are hard to keep covered, it is essential to wear sunscreen and reapply regularly
  • Travel: Long-distance travel should be avoided as it can be tiring, reducing the body’s natural healing capacities, and slowing recovery
  • Eating excessive salt and sugar: High levels of salt and sugar in food are dehydrating and may affect healing time and the quality of the final result

Your Consultant Facial Surgeon and Cadogan Clinic’s expert surgical nurses are on hand throughout your Lip Lift journey to provide support and Lip Lift recovery tips to ensure you achieve the best results.

Is Lip Lift Painful?

Following Lip Lift surgery, it is normal to experience slight discomfort in the first few days of recovery. Most patients find that this can be controlled with standard pain relief medication. Common sensations during this stage of recovery include:

  • Tightness
  • Numbness
  • Itching
  • Tingling

It is also normal for there to be some swelling and bruising around the mouth and lips following during the early stages of Lip Augmentation recovery. This can take 2-3 weeks to fully resolve, and your surgeon may recommend cold compresses to help accelerate the healing process.

Although some slight discomfort is normal after a Lip Lift, if you have any concerns or spot any unusual signs, you should contact the Clinic for further assessment.

Any slight discomfort after Lip Lift surgery is normal and should resolve within the first few days of recovery. You will receive full aftercare support from your medical team at Cadogan Clinic to ensure your recovery is smooth and successful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients find that Lip Augmentation recovery time is around 4-6 weeks. However, this can vary depending on the type of Lip Lift surgery being performed and various personal medical and lifestyle factors.

More involved Lip Lift surgery may require a recovery period of up to 8 weeks. Your surgeon will discuss this with you during your consultation to ensure you are prepared and understand what is involved.

To minimise your Lip Lift recovery time, it is important to follow your surgeon’s recovery and aftercare advice to prevent complications.

Swelling after Lip Lift surgery usually lasts 2-3 weeks.  As with any surgical procedure, it is normal to experience some swelling following a Lip Lift. This will be located around the lips but may extend towards the nose and onto the chin, depending on which areas have been operated on.

To reduce your Lip Lift swelling, your surgeon will recommend sleeping with your head slightly elevated, and they may also suggest using a cold compress at regular intervals, daily.

It is normal for Lip Lift surgery to leave a scar, but this will improve and fade over time.

Due to the visibility of the surgical area, many patients are concerned about Lip Lift scarring. Unlike other areas, it isn’t possible to conceal a Lip Lift scar, so it is essential to find a surgeon who is highly experienced in performing Lip Lift surgery, as their experience will ensure they are highly precise, which helps to reduce Lip Lift scarring.

However, it is also important to remember that scarring can be influenced by a number of personal medical factors. If you have experienced concerns with scarring previously, it is essential to discuss this with your surgeon during your consultation so they can ensure the appropriate support and treatments, such as silicone dressings, are available as soon as they are required.
