What is Gynaecomastia Surgery?

Also known as Male Breast Reduction, Gynaecomastia Surgery is a surgical procedure which reduces excess male breast growth, a medical condition known as Gynaecomastia.

Gynaecomastia, sometimes spelt Gynecomastia, causes abnormal breast growth in up to 65-70% of men, most often during periods of hormonal fluctuation such as adolescence or older age (typically over 55). Gynaecomastia Surgery is a popular procedure, especially in men aged under 40, and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reports that in 2025, Gynaecomastia Surgery was in the top ten most popular procedures in the UK.

Cadogan Clinic’s team of UK-leading Consultant Plastic Surgeons are specialists in performing Gynaecomastia Surgery, providing the highest standards of patient care and results. 100% of Cadogan Clinic’s surgical patients would recommend the Clinic to their family and friends.

Excess male breast tissue can develop for a number of reasons:

  • Natural hormonal fluctuations or imbalance
  • Medical conditions and certain medications
  • Unsupervised steroid use

It is important to understand the difference between Gynaecomastia and excess chest fat, known as Pseudogynaecomastia:

  • Pseudogynaecomastia (Chest Fat): An accumulation of soft fatty tissue, which develops evenly across the chest, and changes with weight loss or gain
  • Gynaecomastia: The development of glandular breast tissue directly behind the nipple, which has a firm feel, and may result in pain or sensitivity

Both Gynaecomastia and Pseudogynaecomastia are typically treated with Liposuction to extract the excess fat and tissue. However, Gynaecomastia patients may need additional gland removal surgery, known as Webster’s Procedure, to prevent the condition from recurring.

Gynaecomastia Surgery is a procedure to address excess male breast growth, known as Gynaecomastia, caused by hormonal imbalance, medical conditions or steroid use.

What Happens After Your Gynaecomastia Surgery at Cadogan Clinic?

Straight after your Gynaecomastia Surgery has been completed in one of Cadogan Clinic’s state-of-the-art in-house operating theatres, you will be taken to our recovery ward to begin your recovery. Our specialist surgical nurses will monitor your blood pressure, temperature and heart rate to ensure you are well as you wake up from general anaesthetic.

Once you have woken up and you are comfortable, you will be transferred to our ambulatory ward. You will have your own room, where you will have something to eat and drink, and be prepared to be discharged. When you and the nurses agree that you are ready, they will talk you through your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery instructions, which you will also receive in writing, and give you any medication you require. You will be collected by a family member or friend who will stay with you for at least 24 hours, so you can continue your recovery in the comfort of your own home.

You will begin your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery in the care of Cadogan Clinic’s dedicated surgical nursing team, who will ensure you are fully prepared for your discharge following surgery.

Gynaecomastia Surgery Recovery Timeline

Every patient’s Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery time is slightly different, depending on several factors which your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will discuss during your consultation process to ensure you know what to expect:

  • Surgical Techniques: Typically, Male Breast Reduction procedures involving gland removal, as well as Liposuction, will have a longer recovery time than Liposuction alone
  • Extent: Removing a larger amount of tissue may increase the Gynaecomastia Surgery healing time
  • Personal Factors: Certain medical conditions and influences on healing may affect your overall recovery time following Gynaecomastia Surgery

There are general milestones that you can expect to reach during your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery. Your surgeon will discuss any personal factors relating to your medical history or lifestyle that may affect your recovery ahead of your procedure.

2-3 Days After Your Gynaecomastia Surgery

During your immediate recovery after Gynaecomastia Surgery:

  • Mobility: You will be mobile, and it is important to move around gently to prevent complications such as deep vein thrombosis
  • Swelling and bruising: It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising around your chest
  • Garments: Your surgeon will ask you to wear a compression vest for as many hours as possible for at least 6 weeks to control swelling and protect your incisions
  • Discomfort: It is normal to feel some slight discomfort for the first few days, which may include tightness and itching around your incisions. This is normally manageable with over-the-counter painkillers

1-2 Weeks After Your Gynaecomastia Surgery

You will have made noticeable progress within the first couple of weeks after your Gynaecomastia Surgery:

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your first follow-up appointment with our surgical nursing team, 7-10 days after your surgery, to remove your sutures, assess your progress and redress your chest
  • Swelling and bruising: It is normal to still have swelling and bruising at this stage, but it will be starting to settle down
  • Ongoing aftercare: You must continue to wear your compression garment as instructed and keep your dressings clean and dry

1 Month After Your Gynaecomastia Surgery

In most cases, people begin to feel as though they are getting back to normal 1 month after their Gynaecomastia Surgery:

  • Daily activities: Apart from strenuous activities and most exercise, you should have restarted most daily activities at this point
  • Swelling and bruising: Depending on the extent of your surgery, any swelling and bruising should be nearly resolved, or possibly even healed

6-8 Weeks After Your Gynaecomastia Surgery

6-8 weeks after your procedure, you can expect your initial Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery to be complete.

  • Follow-up appointments: You will have your second follow-up appointment, this time with your Consultant Plastic Surgeon, to discuss your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery and results
  • Exercise: Most people are able to start exercising again, although your surgeon may provide personalised guidance
  • Garments: You should be able to stop wearing your compression garment at this point in your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery timeline

3 Months After Your Gynaecomastia Surgery

3 months after your Male Breast Reduction procedure, your recovery should be almost entirely complete, and you will be enjoying your results:

  • Scarring: Gynaecomastia scarring will continue to fade over time
  • Further support: Cadogan Clinic’s specialist nurses are on-hand 24-hours a day if you have any questions throughout your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery period

Although every patient’s recovery timeline after Gynaecomastia Surgery can vary, there are several stages you can expect to navigate during your healing and recovery process.

Gynaecomastia Surgery Recovery Tips

Ahead of your Gynaecomastia Surgery, your Consultant Plastic Surgeon will provide you with comprehensive recovery and aftercare instructions to ensure you know what to anticipate. It is essential that you follow your surgeon’s advice to prevent complications and achieve your desired results.

What You Should Do During Gynaecomastia Surgery Recovery

  • Organise support: It is important to remember that you will be limited in some of the activities you are able to undertake during your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery, and that rest is crucial. Asking for help from family and friends during your recovery is crucial to ensure you recover fully and without complications
  • Wear your compression garment: Your compression garment will reduce swelling, aid healing and protect the surgical area.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water will prevent water retention around the chest area, helping to accelerate the healing process.
  • Eat a balanced diet: Prioritising nutritious foods high in protein and vitamins will aid your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery

What You Shouldn’t Do During Gynaecomastia Surgery Recovery

  • Strenuous activity: Undertaking strenuous activity or exercise too early in your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery may place strain on your incisions, which can lead to complications or delayed healing
  • Travel: Travelling too soon before you have recovered from Gynaecomastia Surgery may cause stress on your body, which may result in delayed healing
  • Eat excessive salt and sugar: When eaten in large amounts, salt and sugar can cause dehydration, which may slow your rate of recovery.

There are a range of simple steps patients can take following Gynaecomastia Surgery to prevent complications and achieve the best results.

Is Gynaecomastia Surgery Painful?

The early stages of Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery may involve some discomfort, but this is usually manageable with standard pain relief medication, which will have been prescribed by your medical team when you were discharged. It is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, tightness and itching around the surgical site, but this should resolve within the first few weeks, and any pain is rarely severe.

During your Gynaecomastia Surgery recovery, you will have access to the Cadogan Clinic’s specialist surgical 24/7 nursing phone line to ensure you can access swift support and assistance, if it is required.

The recovery following Gynaecomastia Surgery may involve some discomfort, but it is rarely long-term, and your medical team at Cadogan Clinic will ensure you have the right tools to manage this.
