What is a Revision Tummy Tuck?

A Revision Tummy Tuck, also known as a Revision Abdominoplasty, is a secondary surgical procedure that alters or corrects the results of an initial Tummy Tuck.

Cadogan Clinic is an award-winning clinic, based in Chelsea, London, which has been delivering world-class tertiary care for over 20 years. Our team of the UK’s best Consultant Plastic Surgeons regularly accept referrals from other providers to correct complex Abdominoplasty surgery performed elsewhere. Cadogan Clinic’s leadership has been rated Outstanding by the CQC, and 100% of our surgical patients would recommend the clinic to their family and friends.

With an industry-leading revision rate of 0.8% (compared with a national average of ~10%) for all primary surgical procedures, Cadogan Clinic is the most trusted surgical centre of excellence for revisions among UK surgeons. We are known for delivering the highest standards of patient care and outcomes.

Many patients undergo Abdominoplasty surgery to correct functional muscular concerns, such as Diastasis Recti, following pregnancy and childbirth. Disappointing results are more than just aesthetically disheartening; they may also extend or worsen the discomfort the surgery was supposed to address.

In some cases, concerns following primary Tummy Tuck can be resolved by the same surgeon who performed the initial surgery. However, for other patients, a referral to a Revision Tummy Tuck specialist may be required for several reasons:

  • Certain complications have developed from the initial Abdominoplasty surgery which require specialist expertise to correct
  • The primary Tummy Tuck procedure was performed by an unregulated surgeon, outside of the UK, without comprehensive recovery and aftercare support
  • Contact with the initial surgeon has been lost in the years following the primary Tummy Tuck procedure

Revision Tummy Tuck surgery is often more involved than the initial procedure and may require a specialist level of surgical expertise due to changes in the natural anatomy arising from the primary surgery.

Abdominoplasty is a highly popular procedure in the UK. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported that in 2025, Abdominoplasty was the fourth most popular surgical procedure in the UK, and that the number of Male Abdominoplasty procedures had increased by 7% compared with the previous year.

When considering any surgical body contouring procedure, it is crucial to prioritise finding a highly experienced, specialist Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon who can achieve your desired outcomes, whilst maintaining the highest standards of patient care and safety.

Also known as a secondary Abdominoplasty, a Revision Tummy Tuck is a follow-up surgical procedure, performed to alter or correct the results of an initial Tummy Tuck.

What is Involved in a Revision Tummy Tuck?

There are several types of Tummy Tuck surgery, depending on a patient’s initial concerns and desired results. However, the techniques used in a Revision Tummy Tuck may not directly reflect the type of surgery a patient initially underwent, depending on the concerns being addressed during the Tummy Tuck revision.

Issues such as unpredictable scar tissue, skin puckering around the incisions (known as dog ears) and damage to the abdominal muscles may require a combination of specialist plastic surgery techniques to reconstruct and repair the area, improving abdominal health and function, which will also improve the overall Tummy Tuck results.

It is important to remember that even in cases where the concerns arising from the primary Abdominoplasty are obvious and mostly surface-level, the revision procedure will usually be more complex due to changes in the anatomy, which will occur even during a standard, successful procedure, such as scar tissue formation.

Your Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon will develop a bespoke surgical plan based on your personal concerns and desired outcomes and will discuss the required techniques during your consultation to ensure you are fully informed about your procedure.

The specialist reconstructive techniques typically used in a Revision Tummy Tuck may not be reflective of the original procedure you underwent, depending on the concerns arising from the initial surgery and your desired results.

Why Do People Have a Revision Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck Revision procedures are carried out to address a wide range of functional and medical concerns, as well as to achieve aesthetic refinements.

Both medical and aesthetic concerns can have a dramatic impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing. In cases where these concerns have arisen from a previous surgery, the effects can be exacerbated.

Medical reasons:

  • To correct complications arising from a primary Abdominoplasty procedure such as tissue injury
  • To address complex scarring which may be affecting comfort and mobility
  • To revise dog ears and skin puckering which can cause skin irritation, impacting exercise and mobility
  • To refine functional muscle repair, addressing concerns such as Diastasis Recti
  • To restore previous results, such as Tummy Tuck Revision after pregnancy

Aesthetic reasons:

There are several medical and aesthetic reasons patients choose to undergo a Tummy Tuck Revision to restore muscular function and confidence.

Who is Suitable for a Revision Tummy Tuck?

Your suitability for a Revision Tummy Tuck will be assessed by one of Cadogan Clinic’s Consultant Body Contouring Surgeons during a one-to-one consultation at our Chelsea-based clinic.

Consultations for Tummy Tuck Revision usually take up to 60 minutes and involve:

  • A comprehensive discussion about your concerns, what was involved in your previous procedure, and your expectations from a Tummy Tuck Revision
  • An expert examination of your abdomen and the areas that were operated on as part of your initial Tummy Tuck
  • An assessment of your overall physical and mental health to ensure you are fit to undergo a general anaesthetic procedure
  • A discussion about any possible surgical plan, and the results that could be realistically achieved

You must be over 18 to have a Revision Tummy Tuck at Cadogan Clinic.

It is important to understand the additional complexity of a Revision Tummy Tuck compared with the initial surgery. Depending on the concerns and complications you are hoping to address with a Tummy Tuck Revision, your surgeon may raise certain limitations of secondary surgery. It is also important to reflect on the results you were hoping to achieve from your primary Abdominoplasty procedure to establish realistic expectations from your revision treatment. The priority of a Revision Tummy Tuck should always be to restore the health and function of the abdominal area, and it is important to be aware of how any complications arising from the primary procedure may affect the results of your secondary surgery.

As part of developing your personalised surgical plan, your Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon will thoroughly assess your concerns, desired results and overall health to determine whether you are suitable for Revision Tummy Tuck surgery.

What are the Benefits of a Revision Facelift?

Tummy Tuck Revision can be a transformative procedure with many benefits for a patient’s health and quality of life.

Your Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon will develop a bespoke surgical treatment plan involving the most advanced surgical techniques to ensure you achieve the best results possible.

Revision Tummy Tuck benefits include:

  • Corrected scarring and dog ears: Comfort and mobility which has been impaired by raised or hardened scarring or dog ears can be improved
  • Toned abdominal skin: Any residual loose skin which has not been effectively addressed can be skilfully removed
  • Repaired muscle function: Concerns such as Diastasis Recti which may have arisen since or not fully corrected during the initial procedure can be resolved
  • Balanced bodily proportions: Overall bodily proportions can be refined and balanced
  • Increased confidence: Self-image and quality of life can be dramatically affected by unsatisfactory Tummy Tuck results, which a secondary procedure can address

It is widely acknowledged that Revision Tummy Tuck is a highly beneficial procedure which can turn around unsatisfactory results from an initial procedure to restore health and confidence.

What to Expect from a Revision Tummy Tuck at Cadogan Clinic

Your personal surgical patient advisor will discuss your Cadogan Clinic surgical journey ahead of your consultation, and your Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon will also discuss what you can expect. You will receive support at every stage of your procedure from your personal surgical advisor, our pre-operative team and our specialist surgical nurses.

Every potential Revision Tummy Tuck patient at Cadogan Clinic, London has up to two consultations with their Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon to discuss their concerns, desired results and their bespoke surgical plan. All consultations usually last between 30-60 minutes, and take place in our modern, purpose-built consultation rooms within our dedicated hospital facility, based in Chelsea, London.

To help you to prepare and ensure you get the most from your consultations, your personal surgical advisor will recommend that you write down any questions you have for your surgeon. You will also be asked to bring any information you have about your initial Abdominoplasty procedure, so your surgeon has a complete picture of what was involved and how any concerns or complications that may have occurred since have developed or arisen.

Your surgeon will also take photos of your abdomen for your medical records, and will discuss your physical and mental medical history, including any underlying conditions, to ensure you are suitable for a general anaesthetic surgery.

If your surgeon decides that a Revision Abdominoplasty is the best option to address your concerns, they will create a bespoke treatment plan, which your patient advisor will discuss with you, along with the pricing and dates for your surgery. This is followed by a mandatory two-week cooling-off period to give you time to consider all of the information you have been given and whether you want to proceed with your Revision Tummy Tuck. During this time, you can contact your patient advisor at any time to discuss any questions you have about the procedure or your personal plan.

If you choose to go ahead with your Tummy Tuck Revision, you will next come back to Cadogan Clinic on the day of your surgery.

Your surgeon will provide personalised pre-operative instructions so you can prepare ahead of your surgery. Alongside anything specific to your personal health and requirements, surgical preparation typically includes:

  • You will need to complete some short pre-operative forms to ensure your surgeon, anaesthetist and nurses have consistent information and can advise on any concerns that didn’t come up during the consultation process
  • You must stop smoking or vaping for at least six weeks before your Revision Tummy Tuck to aid your healing and recovery. You may need to consider this when choosing a surgery date
  • You will also be asked to reduce your alcohol consumption to aid your healing and recovery and prevent complications
  • You shouldn’t take any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, and you may need to refrain from taking certain supplements, as these are linked to increased bleeding during surgery, which may result in complications
  • You must organise a chaperone to collect you after your Revision Tummy Tuck, and provide their details in advance. They need to be a friend or family member, who can either drive you themselves or accompany you in a taxi, and who can stay with you overnight
  • You will be asked to remove any jewellery, gel or acrylic nails and metal-tipped hair extensions before you arrive at the Clinic for your Revision Tummy Tuck as part of patient safety protocols
  • You will need to adhere to fasting instructions, including not eating any solid food or consuming any juice or milk (including in tea and coffee) in the six hours before you arrive at the Clinic. You may have small amounts of clear liquids such as water, black tea or black coffee up to two hours before you arrive at the Clinic.

It is important to remember that if you do not follow your pre-operative instructions, your Tummy Tuck Revision may not be able to go ahead. Cadogan Clinic’s pre-operative team will be available throughout your surgery preparation to support you and answer any questions.

You will be asked to arrive at the Clinic an hour before your Revision Tummy Tuck is due to start. You will speak with your surgeon, anaesthetist, and our specialist surgical nurses to review your final preparations and ensure you are ready to proceed. You will then be taken into one of Cadogan Clinic’s three state-of-the-art operating theatres where your procedure will take place.

Your Revision Tummy Tuck will be carried out under a general anaesthetic, so you are asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure. Cadogan Clinic pioneered the use of TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia), and all surgical procedures continue to be performed using this technique, which increases patient comfort by reducing post-operative nausea and accelerating initial recovery, allowing for quicker discharge, without undermining patient safety.

Once your Revision Tummy Tuck has been completed, your surgeon will place you in a compression garment, and you will be taken to our recovery ward. A specialist surgical nurse will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature, and ensure you are comfortable as you wake up.

When you are ready, you will be transferred to a private room in our ambulatory ward. Here, our team of specialist surgical nurses will prepare you for discharge. You will have something to eat and drink, and you will discuss any medication and recovery steps you need to be aware of once you are home. Your chaperone will be asked to come, and you will leave the hospital to continue your recovery at home.

Due to the highly personalised nature of Revision Tummy Tuck, recovery times can vary. It is normal to experience some discomfort in the first few days of recovery, but this is usually managed with over-the-counter medications.

Throughout your recovery, you can contact our specialist surgical nurses via their dedicated 24-hour aftercare phone line.

Depending on the extent of your Revision Tummy Tuck, most patients find they can return to most of their usual activities within 2-3 weeks, with swelling and bruising subsiding within 4 weeks.

You will have an in-person appointment with our specialist surgical nurses 7-10 days after your Revision Tummy Tuck, where they will assess your healing and check your dressings. They will also provide any information you need about further at-home aftercare.

Six weeks after your Revision Tummy Tuck, you will meet your Consultant Body Contouring Surgeon to discuss your results and recovery. They will also answer any questions you have about any ongoing aftercare you may require.

For most patients, structured care ends after 6-8 weeks unless further care is required. You can contact our team at any time after this point if you have any questions or concerns.
