Best Clinic UK - Aesthetics Awards 2024

Summary

  • Revision Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure which corrects and alters the results of a primary Rhinoplasty
  • There are several medical and aesthetic reasons that patients choose to undergo a secondary Rhinoplasty
  • Secondary Rhinoplasty can involve a range of techniques, and may be more complex than the initial procedure
  • Cadogan Clinic has brought together a team of specialist Consultant ENT and Rhinoplasty Surgeons who are experts in Revision Rhinoplasty

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

A Revision Rhinoplasty, also known as a secondary Rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure which addresses a wide range of medical and aesthetic concerns which have either arisen from or developed in the time after a previous Rhinoplasty procedure.

Cadogan Clinic, London, has brought together a team of the best Consultant Rhinoplasty Surgeons in the UK, all experts in complex Rhinoplasty revision. We regularly receive referrals from other surgical providers who require support or assistance with Rhinoplasty complications arising from surgeries that were performed elsewhere. Cadogan Clinic maintains industry-leading standards for patient safety and outcomes, overseen by our CQC-rated Outstanding leadership team.

Our award-winning clinic is highly trusted among UK surgeons as a secondary surgery centre of excellence due to our industy-leading safety data, including a 0.8% surgical revision rate (compared with a ~10% national average) and a surgical infection rate of 0.01% (compared with a 4.7% national average).

As primary Rhinoplasty is performed to address functional concerns, such as breathing difficulties and sleep disorders, unsatisfactory results are more than just aesthetically disappointing; they may also indicate a worsening of the medical condition that the initial surgery was intended to address.

Depending on the concerns to be addressed, secondary Rhinoplasty may be performed by the same surgeon who performed the initial surgery. However, there are several reasons why Revision Rhinoplasty may need to be performed by a specialist, via a referral:

  • Certain complications arising from the initial Rhinoplasty procedure may require specialist expertise to resolve
  • The initial Rhinoplasty surgery was performed outside of the UK by an unregulated provider without suitable recovery and aftercare support
  • In the years following the primary Rhinoplasty, contact has been lost with the surgeon, or they are no longer practising

Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular surgical procedures carried out in the UK. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reports that in 2025, Rhinoplasty was the third most popular facial procedure in the UK.

If you are considering Rhinoplasty surgery, it is essential to research a range of providers and find a highly experienced Consultant Surgeon who specialises in Rhinoplasty surgery. This ensures you will receive the highest standards of patient care and achieve your desired outcomes.

Revision Rhinoplasty, also known as secondary Rhinoplasty, is a follow-up surgical procedure which is carried out to correct or alter the results of an initial Rhinoplasty.

What is Involved in a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a highly intricate procedure that involves many complex surgical techniques. It is important to understand that the techniques used in a Revision Rhinoplasty may differ from those used in the initial surgery a patient underwent, depending on the concerns being addressed.

In addition to the expected alterations to a patient’s natural anatomy following initial Rhinoplasty surgery, specific concerns such as abnormal scarring, nasal valve collapse, and pollybeak deformity may require a bespoke combination of specialist plastic surgery and reconstructive techniques to resolve. This will improve nasal function, in turn enhancing overall Rhinoplasty results.

Revision Rhinoplasty is known to be an especially complex procedure, requiring dedicated expertise in the techniques required, such as the use of cartilage grafts. At Cadogan Clinic, your Consultant ENT and Rhinoplasty Surgeon will create a personalised surgical plan to specifically address your personal concerns. They will ensure you are fully informed and understand the techniques that will be used in your Revision Rhinoplasty and the results that can be achieved.

Depending on your personal concerns and desired results, the techniques used in your Revision Rhinoplasty may not directly reflect the initial procedure.

Why Do People Have a Revision Rhinoplasty?

People choose to have a Rhinoplasty revision procedure to address many functional and medical concerns, as well as to refine aesthetic results.

Functional and aesthetic concerns can have a significant effect on individual confidence and quality of life, and where these issues have arisen from a previous surgery, the impacts may be exacerbated.

Medical reasons:

  • To resolve complications arising from initial Rhinoplasty surgery such as pollybeak deformity or nasal valve collapse
  • To reduce complex internal scarring, known as nasal synechiae, which can affect breathing and cause sleep disorders
  • To correct structural issues such as the over-reduction of cartilage
  • To restore previous results in cases where injury, such as a broken nose, has occurred after a primary Rhinoplasty

Aesthetic reasons:

  • To reduce the visibility of external scarring
  • To refine aesthetic results, balancing the proportions of the face

There are several functional and aesthetic reasons patients seek a Rhinoplasty Revision to restore nasal function, confidence and quality of life.

Who is Suitable for a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Your suitability for Revision Rhinoplasty surgery will be assessed during your bespoke one-to-one consultation at Cadogan Clinic’s dedicated hospital facility by a specialist Consultant Rhinoplasty surgeon.

Revision Rhinoplasty consultations typically take 30-60 minutes and include:

  • An in-depth discussion about your previous Rhinoplasty procedure, the concerns you wish to be addressed and your desired outcomes
  • A thorough medical examination of your nose to assess the severity of your concerns
  • A pre-operative assessment to record your physical and mental medical history, and ensure you are fit and well for a general anaesthetic procedure
  • Surgical imaging through Crysalix 4D technology to show you the outcomes that may be possible
  • A discussion about your prospective surgical plan and the results that could be realistically achieved

You must be over 18 to have a Revision Rhinoplasty at Cadogan Clinic.

As Revision Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure, your surgeon may raise certain limitations of secondary surgery during your consultation. It is important to prioritise addressing the health and function of your nose and to understand that complications arising from your primary surgery may affect the results achievable in your Revision Rhinoplasty.

To develop your personal surgical plan, your Consultant Rhinoplasty Surgeon will fully discuss your concerns, desired results and medical history to decide whether you are suitable for a Revision Rhinoplasty.

What are the Benefits of a Revision Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty Revision has many benefits, and can be transformational for a patient’s confidence and wellbeing.

To ensure your procedure is optimally beneficial, your Consultant Rhinoplasty Surgeon will develop a bespoke surgical plan, designed around your personal concerns and desired outcomes.

Benefits of a Revision Rhinoplasty include:

  • Corrected functional concerns: Breathing difficulties and sleep disorders can have a dramatic effect on health and quality of life, which Revision Rhinoplasty can improve
  • Balanced facial proportions: Nose and facial proportions can be refined and balanced
  • Reduced scarring: Both external and internal scarring can be addressed
  • Increased confidence: Confidence and self-image can be significantly affected by disappointing Rhinoplasty results, which can be addressed with a revision procedure

Revision Rhinoplasty can reverse unsatisfactory results arising from a previous procedure, making it a highly beneficial procedure.

What to Expect from Revision Rhinoplasty at Cadogan Clinic

When you first contact Cadogan Clinic about Revision Rhinoplasty, you will speak with one of our specialist surgical patient advisors, who will match you with the best surgeon to meet your needs and discuss the overall process. You will be supported throughout your surgical journey by your personal surgical patient advisor, your medical team, our pre-operative team and our specialist surgical nurses.

Any patient considering Revision Rhinoplasty at Cadogan Clinic has up to two one-to-one consultations with their Consultant Rhinoplasty Surgeon to discuss their concerns, desired outcomes and personal treatment plan. All consultations usually last between 30-60 minutes and take place in our modern, purpose-built consultation rooms within our dedicated hospital facility in Chelsea, London.

To ensure you get the most from your consultations, we recommend that you write down any questions you have for your surgeon. You will also be asked to bring any information you have about your initial Rhinoplasty procedure to ensure your surgeon has a full understanding of your previous surgery and any complications that may have arisen.

Your surgeon will also take photos for your medical records and may use Crysalix 4D imaging to generate images showing the results your Revision Rhinoplasty can achieve.

After your consultation, your personal advisor will contact you to discuss your bespoke surgical plan, the pricing and available dates for your surgery. You will then have a mandatory two-week cooling-off period to consider all the information you have been given and decide whether you want to proceed with your Revision Rhinoplasty procedure. During this time, you can contact your patient advisor at any time to discuss any questions you have about the procedure or your surgical plan.

If you choose to go ahead with your Rhinoplasty Revision, you will most likely return to Cadogan Clinic on the day of your procedure.

Your surgeon will provide personalised pre-operative instructions to help you prepare for your Revision Rhinoplasty. Alongside anything specific to your personal health and requirements, surgical preparation at Cadogan Clinic usually involves:

  • Completing some short pre-operative forms to ensure your surgeon, anaesthetist and nurses have consistent information and can advise on any medical factors that didn’t come up during the consultation process
  • Stopping smoking or vaping for at least six weeks before your Revision Rhinoplasty to aid your healing and recovery. You may need to consider this when choosing a surgery date
  • Reducing your alcohol consumption to aid your healing and recovery and prevent complications
  • Not taking any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, and refraining from taking certain supplements, as these are linked to increased bleeding during surgery, which may result in complications
  • Organising a chaperone to collect you after your Revision Rhinoplasty, and providing their details in advance. They need to be a friend or family member, who can either drive you themselves or accompany you in a taxi, and who can stay with you overnight
  • Removing any jewellery, gel or acrylic nails and metal-tipped hair extensions before you arrive at the Clinic for your procedure as part of patient safety protocols
  • Following fasting instructions, including not eating any solid food or consuming any juice or milk (including in tea and coffee) in the six hours before you arrive at the Clinic. You may have small amounts of clear liquids such as water, black tea or black coffee up to two hours before you arrive at the Clinic.

It is important to remember that if you do not follow your pre-operative instructions, your Revision Rhinoplasty may not be able to go ahead. Cadogan Clinic’s pre-operative team will be available throughout your surgery preparation to support you and answer any questions.

You will be asked to arrive at the Clinic an hour before your Revision Rhinoplasty is due to start. Before you enter theatre, you will speak with your surgeon, anaesthetist, and our specialist surgical nurses about any final preparations and ensure you are ready to proceed. You will then be taken into one of Cadogan Clinic’s three state-of-the-art operating theatres where your procedure will take place.

Your Revision Rhinoplasty will be carried out under a general anaesthetic, so you are asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure. Cadogan Clinic has pioneered the use of TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia), and all surgical procedures continue to be performed using this technique, which increases patient comfort by reducing post-operative nausea and accelerating initial recovery, allowing for quicker discharge, without undermining patient safety.

Once your Revision Rhinoplasty is complete, you will be taken to our recovery ward. A specialist surgical nurse will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature, and ensure you are comfortable as you wake up.

When you are ready, you will be transferred to a private room in our ambulatory ward where you will be prepared for discharge. You will have something to eat and drink, and you will discuss any medication and recovery steps you need to be aware of once you are home. Your chaperone will be asked to come, and you will leave the hospital to continue your recovery at home.

Due to the highly personalised nature of Revision Rhinoplasty, recovery times can vary, but it is important to be aware that the recovery period may be longer than after your initial procedure. It is normal to experience some discomfort in the first few days of recovery, but this is usually managed with over-the-counter medications.

Throughout your recovery, you can contact our specialist surgical nurses via their dedicated 24-hour aftercare phone line.

Depending on the extent of your Revision Rhinoplasty, most patients find they can return to most of their usual activities within 1-2 weeks, with swelling and bruising subsiding within 4-6 weeks.

You will have an in-person appointment with our specialist surgical nurses 7-10 days after your Revision Rhinoplasty, during which they will assess your healing, remove your splint, and replace it with lighter dressings. They will also provide any information you need about further at-home aftercare.

Six weeks after your Revision Rhinoplasty, you will meet your Consultant Rhinoplasty Surgeon to discuss your results and recovery. They will also answer any questions you have about any ongoing aftercare you may require.

For most patients, the structured care plan ends after 6-8 weeks unless further care is required. You can contact our team at any time after this point if you have any questions or concerns.

Mr. Bryan Mayou

Throughout my forty-year career as a Consultant Surgeon, I have witnessed first-hand how beneficial and transformative Revision Rhinoplasty can be. Frequently Asked Questions

Cadogan Clinic’s team of expert Consultant ENT and Rhinoplasty surgeons is the best in the UK for Revision Rhinoplasty, receiving hundreds of referrals every year to address complex Rhinoplasty complications.

Cadogan Clinic is highly trusted due to our industry-leading safety standards and our CQC-rated Outstanding leadership.

In some cases, depending on the surgical techniques required, patients may experience slightly more discomfort after a Revision Rhinoplasty than after the initial procedure. However, most patients find that recovery after any Rhinoplasty is relatively painless, and any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter medication.

If you have any concerns about pain after Revision Rhinoplasty, you can discuss this with your surgeon ahead of your procedure, and with our specialist nurses at any time during your recovery through their 24-hour aftercare phone line.

For most patients, Revision Rhinoplasty can take place around 12 months after the initial procedure. It is important that your nose is completely healed from the primary surgery to ensure that it is stable and to prevent further complications.

How much Revision Rhinoplasty costs depends on the extent of the surgery and the techniques required. As Revision Rhinoplasty is often a more complex and involved procedure than the primary case, the cost may be higher. Your surgeon and personal patient advisor will discuss this with you as part of your personal treatment plan.
