What is chin liposuction?

Chin liposuction, also known as double chin surgery, is a simple surgical procedure to help get rid of a stubborn double chin.

Chin lipo is intended for those with excess fat around the chin, wrinkling or a lack of a defined jawline, caused by excess skin tissue.

During this procedure, the surgeon will insert a small tube called a cannula in different locations in the chin. The tube is moved back and forth to break down the fat and the loosened fat cells are sucked out of the body. The cannula that is used is very fine, so only small incisions are needed.

As well as removing excess fat, double chin liposuction leaves the patient with a smoother, more defined, profile.

Chin lipo is a popular treatment for both men and women, but for different reasons. Whereas women are seeking this leaner profile, men generally hope to achieve a more chiseled, masculine shape. Fatty deposits in the chin are often an issue for men. Men benefit from a more simple and precise liposuction technique as their skin is thinner and not as elastic as in a woman.

Chin liposuction can be combined with other surgical and non-surgical treatments, such as a neck lift or mini face lift, which focuses on improving the lower portion of the face, for an enhanced result.

Although double chin liposuction is a great way to remove excess fat, it does not improve skin quality. You may not be a good candidate for double chin liposuction if your skin isn’t very elastic and looks loose and saggy.

If you are aged over 50 with substantial skin laxity, your consultant may recommend a neck lift instead of chin lipo. A neck lift will correct a double chin and address loose, hanging skin around the neck. Although liposuction is an invasive treatment, chin lipo is less invasive than a neck lift.

Those aged in their 40s or 50s with problematic sagging skin on the lower part of the face, including the chin, jaw, jowls and upper neck, would benefit from a mini face lift, either with or without chin liposuction.

Your surgeon will be able to discuss all the available treatment options with you at your initial consultation.

Testimonials

What to expect during your consultation at Cadogan Clinic

Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic will start with up to two consultations with one of our leading specialist plastic surgeons at our award-winning premises in Chelsea. These consultations will take between 30 and 60 minutes.

During your consultation, your surgeon will ask about your expectations for your double chin surgery and talk about what will happen during the procedure. They will also explain how the procedure will affect you.

It is important that you are open and honest about what you hope to achieve through surgery to help ensure the best possible result. Your surgeon will be happy to answer any questions you may have at this point. It may be a good idea to write your questions down before attending the consultation. Having established what you want from the surgery, and what is possible given your facial anatomy, several key measurements will be made and standard clinical photography will be taken. Your medical history will be discussed and a physical examination will be carried out.

If your surgeon feels you are a good candidate for surgery, you are then invited to consider whether you would like to proceed with your double chin liposuction or not following a two week 'cooling off' period.

If you decide to go ahead with surgery following the cooling off period, the next time you will return to the clinic is on the day of the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of chin liposuction varies, but the average cost of the procedure ranges between £2,750 and £3,500. This figure depends on how much fat is being removed and which liposuction technique is used. This cost will be higher if other procedures are being performed in combination with double chin liposuction.

All quoted costs online are guide prices only, and subject to confirmation following your in person consultation. Costs are also dependent on whether you have your liposuction under local or general anaesthetic.

Chin liposuction is not a painful procedure. The procedure is carried out with an anaesthetic, so you will not be able to feel anything while the double chin surgery is taking place.

There may be some swelling and discomfort following chin lipo. This will disappear within a few days. There is very little downtime associated with double chin surgery.

If you do experience any mild pain, this can be easily controlled with over-the-counter painkillers.

Double chin liposuction is really only suitable for patients who have sufficient elasticity in their skin. If the skin is elastic enough, chin liposuction should not leave any saggy skin behind.

Chin lipo only removes excess fat and does not have any effect on loose and sagging skin. If you already have lax skin around the chin and neck, then double chin liposuction may not be the best option for you. Other surgical alternatives include a neck lift or mini face lift.

Double chin liposuction leaves minimal scarring behind. This is because the cannula used in chin liposuction is so fine, only very small incisions are required. These incision sites measure just a few millimetres.

At the Cadogan Clinic we have many years experience with liposuction scars and are able to make these tiny scars as inconspicuous as possible.

We also use as few incisions as possible, and employ a gentle technique to avoid unnecessary trauma at the incision.

For those who naturally scar badly, such as keloid and hypertrophic scar formers, we have a comprehensive aftercare scar management programme.

Chin liposuction is carried out as a day case and you will be free to leave the clinic with a friend or family member on the same day as your procedure.

You should expect some swelling and bruising and the skin on the chin and neck may feel tight.

You will likely experience some discomfort, but you should not be in any pain following your chin lipo.

You will need to take up to two weeks off work in order to recover from your chin liposuction.

We recommend avoiding UV light for two to four weeks to aid the scarring process. Avoid getting excess amounts of water on your chin and face for several days after surgery.

We ask that you come in and see our nursing team one week after surgery to ensure your incision sites have been properly reviewed.

It is possible to perform chin liposuction alongside other procedures such as a neck lift, mini face lift or chin augmentation. You may also wish to consider whether you want liposuction on other parts of the face, such as the cheeks or neck.

Your surgeon will be able to advise which combination of treatments will best help you to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Chin liposuction is a permanent way of ridding yourself of stubborn excess fat which causes a double chin. The fat cells which have been removed will not come back.

However if you gain a large amount of weight after your chin lipo, this will have a negative impact on the chin and your face will lose definition. It is important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle so you can enjoy the results of your chin lipo for as long as possible.
