What are female surgeons called in the UK?
As all surgeons hold the same level of qualification, there are no distinguishing titles, based on gender. However, in the UK, consultant surgeons may choose to use personal titles such as Mr., Ms., or Mrs., which may indicate their gender. Alternatively, some surgeons prefer to retain the title Dr., as this is gender-neutral.
How many female surgeons are there?
There has always been a disparity in the number of male and female surgeons; however, this gap has been narrowing in recent years. In 1991, only 3% of surgical consultants were women, but this had increased to 17% overall in 2024. The percentage of female plastic surgeons is slightly higher at 25%.
Cadogan Clinic prides itself on providing opportunities for female surgeons, encouraging more women in training to consider a career in surgery.
Who was the first female surgeon?
The first qualified female surgeon and physician in the UK, was Elizabeth Garrett Anderson in 1865. Despite opposition from the medical establishment, and multiple admission refusals from medical schools, she initially trained as a nurse, before undertaking private medical tuition with various surgeons in London hospitals.
In 1865, she was allowed to take her medical exams and obtain her license from the Society of Apothecaries, which could not exclude her on account of her gender, due to a condition in their charter. She scored the highest marks in her cohort, and The Society of Apothecaries went on to change its rules, preventing other women from following the same path. In 1876 The Medical Act was passed which allowed all qualified applicants to be licensed, regardless of gender.
