Breast Reduction, also known as a Mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure which reduces the volume and weight of the breasts.
During a Breast Reduction, your Consultant Breast Surgeon will make incisions in the crease under the breast (the inframammary fold) and vertically towards the nipple, to make an anchor shape. This allows them to evenly remove excess breast tissue to achieve a balanced, proportionate result.
Cadogan Clinic’s team of expert Consultant Breast Surgeons are specialists in Breast Reduction procedures, having performed thousands of them throughout their careers. 100% of Cadogan Clinic’s surgical patients would recommend the Clinic to their family and friends, and the Clinic’s leadership has been rated Outstanding by the CQC.
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reports that in 2025, Breast Reduction was the second most popular procedure among women, with a 2% increase in the number of Breast Reduction procedures performed compared with the year before.
Breast size can be impacted by several factors, including:
Having overly large breasts can significantly affect confidence and quality of life, making many daily activities and exercise challenging and uncomfortable. Breast Reduction is the most effective option to reduce breast size, increasing comfort and improving confidence.
A surgical Breast Reduction is the most effective treatment to address overly large breasts, which are causing discomfort, self-consciousness and limiting daily activities.
The extent of the reduction which can be achieved during a Breast Reduction procedure will depend on the natural size of the patient’s breasts and their desired results.
There are several factors which can impact the final breast size achieved from a Breast Reduction:
The key consideration when determining how much breast volume can be reduced during a Breast Reduction is the amount of breast tissue required to support nipple function. If too much breast tissue is removed, the blood supply throughout the breast and to the nipple may be compromised, resulting in complications, including possible tissue death.
Although there are no definite rules, in most cases, the optimal decrease in breast size from a Breast Reduction is up to 3 full cup sizes. However, larger Breast Reductions involving a decrease of up to 6 full cup sizes are possible, if a patient’s anatomy allows.
In order to perform a larger Breast Reduction, your Consultant Breast Surgeon may recommend removing the nipples and regrafting them to allow the blood supply to be restored.
Although weight loss is not usually the primary goal of a Breast Reduction, it is a useful illustration of the amount of breast tissue that may be removed.
As cup sizes vary between bra manufacturers and also depend on bodily proportions, they aren’t always the best way to describe the size reduction achieved through a Breast Reduction.
It is important to remember that although these are the quantities of tissue that may be removed, this does not necessarily translate directly into weight loss after Breast Reduction surgery.
Although the exact reduction in cup sizes following a Breast Reduction can vary from patient to patient, most procedures involve a reduction of around 3 cup sizes, while more significant procedures may achieve a reduction of up to 6 cup sizes.
It isn’t possible to perfectly predict the final size a patient may achieve before a Breast Reduction is carried out, as factors such as breast tissue density will affect how the amount of tissue removal correlates with the size reduction. However, using the chart below may provide an approximate idea of the final breast size that may be achieved.
During your consultation, your Consultant Breast Surgeon will examine your breasts to determine the amount of breast tissue that may be removed and will give you an estimate of the post-surgery size that you could achieve.
The final size achieved during a Breast Reduction is based on several personal factors, including breast density and blood flow; however, patients can understand the approximate post-operative size to expect using the Breast Reduction size chart above.
There isn’t a specific minimum size for Breast Reduction. Breast Reduction eligibility criteria are typically based on the impact of breast size on a patient, both physically and emotionally.
Instead of considering breast size alone, your Consultant Breast Surgeon will take into account signs and symptoms, including:
Having disproportionately large breasts affects patients in different ways. While one person may find that their breast size has very little impact on their quality of life, another person may find that the same size has a significant impact on their comfort.
In the UK, there isn’t a minimum size for Breast Reduction, and a Consultant Breast Surgeon will consider several signs and symptoms when deciding whether a patient is suitable for Breast Reduction.
In most cases, the final size after Breast Reduction will be apparent a few weeks after the procedure.
Although your surgeon will discuss your expected final size during your consultation, it is likely that your breasts will feel slightly bigger than this straight after your surgery due to swelling. In cases where a patient has had a small Breast Reduction, the swelling may make the breasts feel slightly larger than they were pre-surgery.
Swelling following a Breast Reduction is a normal part of the recovery process and, depending on the extent of the surgery, may take up to 4 weeks to resolve. During your recovery, you will be asked to wear a surgical bra, which will help the swelling to reduce, as well as supporting your breasts.
Once the swelling has settled within the first few weeks of your recovery, the final size of your breasts will be visible. Your surgeon may remind you to be patient straight after your procedure to allow your recovery to conclude and your final results to develop.
Straight after Breast Reduction surgery, swelling may distort the final result. Most patients will find that they can see the final size they have achieved between 4-6 weeks after surgery.
Following Breast Reduction, it is possible for the breasts to become larger again; however, it is rare for breasts to return to their original size.
There are a number of causes which can lead to the breasts regrowing after Breast Reduction, which your surgeon will make you aware of during your consultation:
Depending on your personal circumstances, your Consultant Breast Surgeon may recommend completing your family before you proceed with a Breast Reduction to prevent your breasts from regrowing after surgery. However, depending on your age and the impact your breast size is having, this isn’t always possible, and surgery may be required sooner.
Breast size can increase again after Breast Reduction surgery; however, your surgeon will assess your personal risk during your consultation and make any adjustments or recommendations which may address this.
Mr. Bryan Mayou
If you are considering a Breast Reduction, it is important to understand the possible results and the final size that may be achieved. Although it isn’t necessarily possible for patients to request a specific size for their Breast Reduction, an experienced and qualified Consultant Breast Surgeon will balance the optimal size reduction with other factors such as aesthetics and future breastfeeding.Mr. Bryan Mayou
How to reduce breast size without surgery?
Breast Reduction surgery is the only way to permanently reduce breast size significantly. Although methods such as compression bras can temporarily make the breasts look smaller, they do not reduce the weight, and will have minimal impact on the physical and emotional effects.
Some patients may also find that weight loss reduces breast size without surgery; however, this typically isn’t significant and can also take a long time. It is also important to consider that for many patients with overly large breasts, exercise is challenging and uncomfortable, which may also limit weight loss efforts.
How big do breasts have to be for a reduction?
There is no minimum size for Breast Reduction in the UK. Instead, Consultant Breast Surgeons will consider the physical and emotional impact that breast size is causing when determining whether Breast Reduction is an appropriate procedure.
Effects such as back and shoulder pain, limited mobility and loss of confidence are all important in assessing the impact that breast size is having on a patient when deciding whether they are suitable for Breast Reduction.
How to decide Breast Reduction size?
Your surgeon will discuss the size that can be achieved with a Breast Reduction during your consultation. This will be determined by assessing various factors, including:
In most cases, a reduction of around 3 cup sizes is optimal during Breast Reduction surgery, but up to 6 sizes can often be achieved depending on the needs of the patient.
