Abdominoplasty vs. Apronectomy

Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy are both types of abdominal surgery which address common concerns affecting the contours and function of the abdomen.

While Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic and functional procedure that reshapes and tightens the abdomen, an Apronectomy is a functional procedure that specifically addresses a hanging apron of skin, known as a pannus, usually for medical reasons.

The abdomen is a prominent feature of the body, and its contours and function can be affected by pregnancy, weight fluctuations and ageing.

Concerns affecting the abdomen can impact:

  • Confidence and quality of life
  • Mobility
  • Physical comfort
  • How an individual presents themselves, including the clothes they feel comfortable in

Although Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy are similar procedures in many ways, they serve distinct purposes and results. If you are considering abdominal surgery, it is important to understand the differences between the two procedures to determine which is suitable to address your concerns and achieve your desired results.

Cadogan Clinic’s team of leading Consultant Body Surgeons are experts in performing all types of abdominal surgery. They offer comprehensive consultation and treatment at our surgical centre of excellence, based in Chelsea, London.

What is an Abdominoplasty?

An Abdominoplasty, also known as a Tummy Tuck, is a surgical procedure which reshapes and tightens the abdominal skin and muscle.

There are several types of Abdominoplasty depending on the patient’s concerns and desired results:

  • Standard Abdominoplasty – Addresses the lower and mid-abdomen via a horizontal incision at the bottom of the abdomen
  • Extended AbdominoplastyA longer horizontal incision is made to address the abdomen, hips and lower back
  • Fleur-de-Lis Abdominoplasty – Both a horizontal incision along the bottom of the abdomen, and a vertical incision up the centre of the abdomen are made to address the upper and lower abdomen
  • Brazilian Abdominoplasty – Also known as a Lipoabdominoplasty, this technique combines Liposuction with Abdominoplasty

During an Abdominoplasty, excess skin is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and the navel is repositioned to create a toned, flat abdomen.

Abdominoplasty is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes up to 4 hours, depending on the technique used.

What is an Apronectomy?

Also known as a Panniculectomy, an Apronectomy is a functional abdominal surgery which specifically addresses a hanging apron of abdominal skin, fat and tissue, known as a pannus or apron stomach. It is often performed as a post weight loss procedure.

During an Apronectomy, incisions are made across the lower abdomen, under the apron stomach, before the excess skin is removed. The incision is then closed, leaving a smooth lower abdomen with no excess skin.

Depending on the patient's desired results, other body contouring procedures, such as BodyTite, can be performed concurrently to enhance the final results. In some cases, patients may wish to have an Abdominoplasty as a follow-up procedure to address other concerns.

Apronectomy surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, and takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Which Abdominal Surgery is Right For Me?

If you are considering abdominal surgery, it is essential to understand what each procedure can offer and whether it is suitable for addressing your concerns.

The best way to determine the right abdomen surgery for you is to speak with a qualified Consultant Body Surgeon who can assess your concerns and develop a bespoke treatment plan.

Concerns Treated with Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a comprehensive surgical procedure which addresses a wide range of abdominal concerns:

Concerns Treated with Apronectomy

Apronectomy is an abdominal surgery which addresses specific concerns:

  • Excess skin – An apron of loose skin hanging over the front of the abdomen can occur due to dramatic weight loss or pregnancy
  • Skin irritation – Rashes and chafing can develop due to the skin rubbing, causing physical discomfort
  • Hygiene challenges – Deep folds of skin can trap moisture and bacteria, making hygiene challenging
  • Mobility – A large pannus can reduce mobility, making it hard to exercise and affecting quality of life

A qualified surgeon can examine and assess your concerns to determine which is the best treatment option for you.

Abdominoplasty vs Apronectomy: Differences in Results

Although both Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy address concerns affecting the shape and function of the abdomen, their primary purposes lead to different results.

During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the differences in results and show you a range of before and after images to demonstrate what each procedure can realistically achieve for you.

Abdominoplasty Results

Abdominoplasty addresses a wide range of common abdominal concerns affecting the skin, fat and muscle.

Abdominoplasty results typically include:

  • Reduced skin laxity – Excess skin is removed to streamline the contours of the abdomen and address skin irritation concerns
  • Strengthened abdominal muscles – Repairing the abdominal muscles tones the abdomen, improving strength and mobility
  • Improved body proportions – By addressing any bulging or imbalance in the abdominal tissue, the body has a more balanced overall appearance
  • Enhanced navel Reshaping and repositioning the navel improves the appearance and comfort of the midriff area

Apronectomy Results

Apronectomy specifically addresses the apron of skin hanging over the abdomen, which can develop due to weight loss or pregnancy.

Apronectomy results typically include:

  • Reduced loose skin – Excess skin hanging over the abdomen is removed to improve overall comfort and aesthetics
  • Improved mobility – Removing the pannus allows for more comfortable and easier movement
  • Remedied skin irritation – Chronic skin irritation and rashes are treated and easier to manage
  • Restored hygiene – Reducing deep folds of skin makes hygiene easier to maintain
  • Enhanced body proportions – The proportions of the abdomen and the rest of the body are brought back into balance

Understanding the potential results of both Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy is crucial to determining the right abdominal surgery to successfully address your concerns.

Abdominoplasty vs Apronectomy: Differences in Recovery

Although there are several similarities between Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy, their recovery periods differ slightly due to the concerns and areas they address.

Whereas Abdominoplasty involves operating on deeper areas, including the muscle, Apronectomy focuses on the skin, which is a less involved surgery.

Your surgeon will discuss your expected healing time for abdominal surgery during your initial consultation to ensure you know what to expect and you can thoroughly prepare ahead of your procedure.

Following your surgeon’s recovery and aftercare guidance is essential to prevent complications and ensure you achieve the best possible results.

Cadogan Clinic provides a comprehensive recovery and aftercare package as part of every Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy procedure:

  • Follow-up appointments – All Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy patients will have at least two follow-up appointments, both with our dedicated surgical nursing team and their surgeon, to monitor their recovery and assess their results
  • Round-the-clock support – Our specialist surgical nurses are available by phone 24-hours a day to assist you with any questions or concerns
  • Post-operative garments and medication – Your dedicated medical team will provide these ahead of your discharge

Abdominoplasty Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising – It is normal to experience swelling and bruising around the abdomen, which will resolve within 2-3 weeks
  • Sleeping position – Your surgeon will advise on the best sleep positions after abdominal surgery, but typically, you will need to sleep on your back for at least 3 weeks to protect your incisions
  • Garments – You will be asked to wear an abdominal compression garment for at least 6 weeks after surgery to prevent complications and protect the abdominal area
  • Exercise – You should avoid any strenuous exercise or activity, including heavy lifting, for 6-8 weeks after surgery to allow complete healing
  • Full recoveryFull recovery after an Abdominoplasty typically takes 6-8 weeks

Apronectomy Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising – The lower abdomen will likely have some swelling and bruising, which will usually heal within 14 days
  • Sleeping position – You should sleep on your back for around 2 weeks after surgery to protect your incisions and prevent irritation
  • Garments – You may be asked to wear a compression garment covering the lower abdomen to protect the surgical area and prevent complications for 4-6 weeks
  • Exercise – You should avoid strenuous activity, exercise and heavy lifting for at least 4 weeks to prevent complications
  • Full recovery – You can expect to be fully recovered after an Apronectomy within 6 weeks

When Should I Get an Abdominoplasty or Apronectomy

Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy are both types of abdominal surgery which can address the common concern of loose belly skin.

However, they have distinct purposes and can address different concerns, depending on cause, severity and the patient’s desired results.

It is important to understand these differences to ensure you make the right decision about which procedure is best for you:

  • For a comprehensive abdominal surgery, addressing loose skin, muscle damage and excess fat, Abdominoplasty is usually the most appropriate procedure
  • To specifically address functional concerns around an overhanging apron stomach (known as a pannus) Apronectomy is the most suitable option

Cadogan Clinic’s team of dedicated patient advisors are on hand to discuss your concerns and match you with the best surgeon to achieve your desired results.

Frequently Asked Questions

The abdomen is one of the areas most commonly affected by excess skin. This is because it is an area which can be easily stretched due to pregnancy, weight loss, and ageing.

Although in some minor cases, excess belly skin will resolve on its own, for most people surgical procedures are the most effective treatment option with the best long-term results.

Depending on a patient's specific concerns, the most effective surgical procedures to reduce loose belly skin are:

  • Abdominoplasty – Also known as a Tummy Tuck, this is a comprehensive surgical procedure which addresses loose skin, abdominal muscle damage and excess fat
  • Apronectomy – Also known as Panniculectomy, this surgical procedure specifically removes the apron of hanging loose skin over the abdomen, known as the pannus, to improve comfort and address post-weight loss functional concerns

Abdomen surgery is any surgical procedure which addresses the contours, appearance and function of the abdomen. This includes the skin, muscle and fat which makes up the abdomen.

Key types of abdominal surgery include Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy. These vary depending on a patient's concerns and desired results. Abdominoplasty is a more comprehensive procedure, but Apronectomy addresses specific post-weight loss concerns.

Although both Abdominoplasty and Apronectomy address the common concern of loose abdominal skin, they have slightly different approaches.

While an Apronectomy removes the loose apron of skin which can result from weight loss and pregnancy, it doesn’t typically tighten the skin, and doesn’t repair the muscle, which achieves further tightening. However, Abdominoplasty removes loose skin, tightens the remaining skin, and repairs the muscle.

Although both Panniculectomy and Tummy Tuck are types of abdominal surgery, they are distinct procedures which aren’t usually performed together.

When considering Panniculectomy vs. Tummy Tuck, it is important to understand what each procedure can address and achieve to determine which is the best option for your needs:

  • Panniculectomy removes the loose hanging apron of skin over the lower abdomen, which can occur due to weight loss or pregnancy, but doesn’t tighten or repair the abdominal muscles
  • Tummy Tuck is a comprehensive procedure which removes loose abdominal skin, tightens the abdominal muscles and can remove excess fat.
