What Is the Difference Between Surgical and Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty?

We offer both surgical and non-surgical Rhinoplasty (nose jobs) at Cadogan Clinic.

A non-surgical rhinoplasty is a non-invasive alternative to traditional Rhinoplasty, involving injectable fillers altering and shaping a person's nose without surgery.

This is a highly effective option for anyone who is concerned with the shape of their nose rather than the size. This procedure is great for correcting several nose issues, including smoothing bumps, straightening hooked or crooked noses and correcting nasal tip droops. The results are immediate and will last for up to a year.

Rhinoplasty surgery is generally a better option for those looking to make more significant, and permanent, changes to the size, shape and function of their nose. While this procedure is usually carried out for cosmetic reasons, a nose job can also help correct breathing issues and help alleviate the symptoms of sleep apnea and snoring. The procedure also helps to correct noses that have been damaged through sports, accident or injury.

Rhinoplasty surgery usually takes between one and three hours, but it takes just 15-30 minutes to carry out a non-surgical nose job. Naturally the surgical option has a longer downtime, with a full recovery taking between 6 and 8 weeks. With a non-surgical rhinoplasty, a patient will be able to return to work and their daily routine straightaway, although it is normal to experience some swelling and bruising for a few days following the procedure. Your surgeon will discuss a variety of nose job types with you to help you make a final decision.

What Are the Different Types of Nose Surgery?

There are five different types of nose jobs that we offer here at the Cadogan Clinic. These include four surgical procedures - closed rhinoplasty, open rhinoplasty, septo-rhinoplasty and rhino-tip surgery - plus the quick, temporary non-surgical rhinoplasty. The type of surgery which is carried out will depend upon the patient’s desired outcome. Here we will look at these in more depth.

Closed Rhinoplasty involves no external scars, as all incisions are done inside the nose. The soft tissues are lifted slightly upward, allowing access to the bone and cartilage. Closed Rhinoplasty involves reduced nasal tissue irritation, less detectable scarring, shorter operating times and faster recovery. Your surgeon will discuss open vs closed rhinoplasty with you to explain which option is best to achieve your desired results.

This is a more invasive procedure widely used for patients who need more extensive nose contouring or nose reduction Your surgeon will make incisions in the columella, which is the skin between your nostrils beneath your nose. Following the incisions, the skin is lifted allowing access inside the nasal cavity for your surgeon to perform reshaping. After the surgery is complete, the columella is sutured, and the nose will be secured in place with tape and a splint to keep the nose in place. The splint will keep the nose in place during the healing process and normally will be removed after one week. Open rhinoplasty is excellent for patients with issues such as genetic or structural deformities, trauma to the nose requiring grafting and unsatisfactory results from a previous nose job. This procedure is often combined with a septo-rhinoplasty.

A Septo-Rhinoplasty is commonly done to improve the functionality of the nose rather than it’s appearance - correcting breathing issues for example. This is often done for patients who suffer from a deviated septum. The septum is the cartilage and bone inside your nose that divides the nostrils. Your surgeon will make an incision in the mucosa (the lining inside your nose) and lift it off the bone and cartilage to remove any parts that are bent, putting them into a straight position allowing for clear breathing. This procedure will improve the way you breathe, and the appearance of your nose can be adjusted as well by combining it with an open rhinoplasty.

Rhino-Tip surgery is done to change the shape of the nose by modifying the structure of the underlying cartilage. Most alterations are done from inside the nose to minimize any scarring. Your surgeon can create the perfect tip for your nose structure. Typical conditions include a big or crooked nose tip, flared nostrils or a hooked tip.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty is non-surgical and non-invasive and involves an injectable filler being used to correct very minor imperfections. This is a popular choice for clients who need minimal changes to the shape of their nose. Keep in mind that over time the filler will begin to dissolve, and you may need further treatments. Some patients also use a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty to get an idea of how the results of a Surgical Rhinoplasty may look.

Surgical Rhinoplasty vs Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty: How to Choose the Best Option for You

With so many different options available for nose surgery, it can be difficult to decide exactly which procedure you want to discuss with your surgeon. Fortunately, they will discuss your concerns with you and explain which the best options are to achieve your desired results.

A surgical nose job is the best option if you are looking for permanent changes to the size and shape of your nose. Depending on your requirements, your surgeon can make your nose smaller (nose reduction), make your nose larger (nose augmentation) change the shape of your nose (including the nostrils) or change the angle between the nose and top lip.

If the appearance of your nose is causing you mental distress or having a major impact on your self-confidence, then a surgical rhinoplasty could help.

From a health point of view, if you are looking to correct any breathing issues then a surgical nose job is your only option. To view a selection of surgical nose job before and afters click here.

On the other hand, if your concerns are purely about the appearance of your nose and you are happy with more subtle results, non-surgical rhinoplasty may be the right option for you. It is worth remembering that the non-surgical rhinoplasty is not permanent, and you will need to have follow-up sessions with your surgeon every 6-12 months to maintain the results. The non-surgical rhinoplasty is also a good option to consider if you don’t want to undergo a 6–8-week recovery period as you will need to with a surgical rhinoplasty.
