Chin Liposuction vs Neck Lift

Both Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction are surgical procedures which address concerns affecting the neck and jawline contours.

The neck and jawline are often affected by weight loss, ageing, and other lifestyle factors. These concerns can lead to both functional and aesthetic issues that may affect confidence and quality of life.

Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction each have their own distinct applications and outcomes. When choosing a procedure, it is important to understand how your concerns can be treated with each option, and its pros and cons.

Cadogan Clinic has brought together a team of specialist Consultant Facial Surgeons who are all highly experienced in treating neck and jawline contour concerns.

What is a Neck Lift?

Neck Lift, also known as Platysmaplasty, is a surgical procedure which removes excess skin, toning and sculpting the neck to achieve a slender, elegant neck contour.

During a Neck Lift, incisions are made under the chin and behind the ears before excess skin is removed. The underlying tissue and muscle are tightened, and the skin is replaced in its new, toned placement.

It is popular to combine a Neck Lift with other facial procedures, such as Facelift, Blepharoplasty, Lip Lift, and Brow Lift, to enhance the final result.

Neck Lift is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes 2-3 hours to complete.

What is Chin Liposuction?

Chin Liposuction, sometimes abbreviated to Chin Lipo, is a surgical procedure that addresses excess fat under the chin and jawline, often referred to as a double chin.

Small incisions are made under the jawline before a specialist cannula is inserted, and the excess fat is extracted. Although Traditional Liposuction is often used, there are various types of Liposuction which work well for treating the chin and jawline, including Laser and Vaser Liposuction, which also tighten the skin.

Chin Liposuction is a popular standalone procedure, but can also be combined with other facial sculpting procedures, such as Buccal Fat Removal, Dimpleplasty, or Facelift, to achieve complete lower facial rejuvenation.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, Chin Liposuction can be performed under local or general anaesthetic and typically takes up to 90 minutes to complete as a standalone surgery.

Can You Combine Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction?

Both Chin Lipo or Neck Lift are regularly combined with other facial contouring surgeries, including each other.

During a combined Chin Lipo and Neck Lift procedure, Liposuction is first performed to remove excess fat from under the chin and jawline, before excess skin is removed and the underlying tissues tightened.

Due to the slightly more involved nature of the surgery, combined Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction takes up to 3 hours to complete, and is performed under general anaesthetic.

Concerns Treated with Neck Lift

A standalone Neck Lift is suited to patients who wish to address the tone and contour of their neck.

Concerns addressed with Neck Lift include:

  • Loose skin – Sometimes known as turkey neck, excess skin can hang down the neck, resulting in skin irritation
  • JowlsExcess skin and fat hanging down from the jawline is a common concern people wish to treat
  • Loss of muscle tone – Loosened facial muscles can cause weakness and discomfort and laxity across the neck and jawline
  • Lines and wrinkles – Vertical and horizontal lines can affect the appearance of the neck

As the skin on the neck is thinner than other parts of the face, concerns can appear sooner and may worsen more quickly. The neck is often affected by weight loss, ageing and health and lifestyle factors which impact the quality of the skin.

Concerns Treated with Chin Liposuction

Chin Liposuction is most appropriate for patients who wish to address concerns affecting the area under the chin and jawline.

Common concerns treated with Chin Liposuction include:

  • Double Chin – The accumulation of excess fat under the chin, which can affect anyone regardless of overall weight
  • Post Weight Loss Contouring – Fat under the chin is often stubborn, even after dramatic weight loss, and may require additional intervention
  • Jawline definition – Softness or heaviness in the jawline can affect the contours of the face and neck or give the appearance of a weak chin

Although Chin Liposuction targets very specific concerns affecting a small area, it can have a transformative effect on the jawline and surrounding areas.

Concerns Treated with Combined Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction

When combined, Chin Lipo and Neck Lift can tackle the concerns listed above, but are primarily beneficial for patients who are concerned about a combination of excess fat and loose skin.

This often arises in cases of dramatic weight loss, where stubborn fat may remain while the skin has become loose from being stretched over time.

The combination of excess skin and stubborn fat can occur after weight loss by any method, but is particularly associated with the use of weight loss medication, a phenomenon sometimes known as Ozempic Face.

Chin Liposuction vs Neck Lift: Differences in Results

Although both Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction address the contours of the neck and jawline, they achieve different results, thanks to the various concerns they address.

Your surgeon will discuss the results you can expect from each procedure during your consultation, to help you decide on which is the right option for you.

Neck Lift Results

Neck Lift primarily addresses structural concerns affecting the skin and muscle in the neck and jawline.

Neck Lift results include:

  • Reduced loose skin to treat a turkey neck
  • A toned and sculpted neck with tightened muscles
  • Smoothed neck lines and wrinkles
  • The appearance of a longer neck
  • Balanced neck and facial proportions

Chin Liposuction Results

Chin Liposuction addresses volume concerns caused by excess fat under the chin and jawline.

Chin Liposuction results include:

  • Reduced excess fat under the chin to treat the appearance of a double chin
  • Sculpted under-chin area with reduced heaviness
  • A sharper and more toned jawline
  • Proportionate and balanced chin and jawline in comparison with the rest of the face and neck

Chin Liposuction vs Neck Lift: Differences in Recovery

Chin Liposuction and Neck Lift recovery times depend on the specific procedure performed. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss your recovery time to allow you to prepare thoroughly in advance.

Following your surgeon’s recovery and aftercare instructions is crucial following any neck and jawline surgery to ensure your results are protected and you don’t experience any complications.

All surgical packages at Cadogan Clinic include comprehensive recovery and aftercare to support you throughout your journey:

Neck Lift Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising – It is normal to experience swelling and bruising after a Neck Lift, which should resolve within 2-3 weeks
  • Sleeping position – Following a Neck Lift, it is essential to sleep on your back for at least 2 weeks to protect your incisions

  • Exercise – You should avoid any strenuous activity, including exercise and heavy lifting, for at least 6 weeks after Neck Lifting procedures

When Should I Get Chin Liposuction or a Neck Lift?

Both Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction address common concerns affecting the neck and jawline. However, it is important to understand when one is more suitable than the other:

  • If excess fat under the chin and jawline is the primary concern, Chin Liposuction is the best option
  • To address loose skin, jowls or lines and banding, Neck Lift is the most suitable procedure
  • In cases where both structure and volume are a concern, Neck Lift and Chin Liposuction can be combined to provide a comprehensive procedure

Cadogan Clinic’s specialist surgical patient advisors are on hand to discuss neck and jawline procedures, and match you with one of our expert Consultant Facial Surgeons for a one to one consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Neck Lift and Facelift are often performed in the same procedure as they complement each other well, and address many shared concerns. However, for patients whose concerns are focused on the neck and who do not require a Facelift as well, Neck Lift can be performed as a standalone procedure.

Jowls are loose skin around the jawline which result in a softened and undefined appearance to the lower face and chin. They are often caused by ageing or dramatic weight loss.

Neck Lift can be a highly effective treatment for jowls as the excess skin is removed from the neck and the underlying tissue is tightened to smooth and define the jawline. In cases of more severe jowls, a Facelift may also be required for optimal results.

Although a Neck Lift will remove excess skin from under the chin and jawline which may be exacerbating the appearance of a double chin, it does not remove the excess fat which is the primary cause of a double chin.

The best way to treat a double chin is with Chin Liposuction, which specifically addresses the pocket of excess fat under the chin and jawline and causes the rounded soft appearance.

To enhance double chin neck surgery, Chin Liposuction can be combined with Neck Lift to remove loose skin and excess fat, addressing a wider range of concerns.
