Concerns about the way your vagina looks or feels are surprisingly common, especially as natural life events such as childbirth and ageing can fundamentally change the appearance of the vagina in an adverse fashion.
The good news is that surgery can improve the appearance, sensation and function of your vagina, providing safe and effective relief from the symptoms and worry that these conditions can cause.
Typical issues raised include a general lack of confidence or satisfaction due to the cosmetic look of the vaginal area, a loss of sensation/satisfaction during intercourse, stress incontinence (such as leaking urine when you sneeze) or urge incontinence (having to rush to the toilet at short notice), and vaginal prolapse – a bulge or heaviness in the vagina or lower abdomen.
Surgical solutions vary from full Vaginal Rejuvenation in which patients choose to combine this procedure with perineal surgery (correcting the area between the vagina and the rectum) and labiaplasty (reshaping and reducing the protrusion of the labia), to a simple perineum and pelvic floor tightening in less severe cases. The range of treatment options will be explained in full by your surgeon during your consultation.

What is a vaginal rejuvenation?
Vaginal Rejuvenation is a combination of surgical procedures which aim to tighten both the internal vaginal muscles and the perineum to help improve overall tone, strength and control-enhancing your sensitivity and sexual experience. In conjunction with this, it deals with the aesthetics of the external labia to neaten up and improve its appearance as this area is commonly stretched during a natural childbirth birth.
What is the difference between Vaginal Rejuvenation and Vaginoplasty?
Whilst a vaginoplasty will tighten the internal cavity of the vagina, a vaginal rejuvenation procedure will improve various factors both internally and externally through a well considered treatment plan often to achieve a pre pregnancy state for each woman.
Am I a suitable candidate for vaginal rejuvenation surgery?
It is incredibly common for a woman to have concerns about the look of this area as well as its function as often a woman's vaginal muscles lose tone as part of the ageing process, or after childbirth and this can cause much embarrassment, discomfort, loss of sensitivity or friction during sexual intercourse and can affect sexual satisfaction and often cause frustration for both yourself and your partner.
What happens during the vaginal rejuvenation procedure?
Once put to sleep usually under a general anaesthetic, your surgeon will begin your surgery. A vaginal rejuvenation operation typically takes about 2 hours (depending on the procedures to be incorporated.) It is treated on a day case basis, meaning that you are discharged to go home a few hours after your surgery.
The procedure is designed to tighten the vagina and is done by joining together the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina and therefore shortening it, using dissolvable stitches, and then removing excess vaginal lining and tightening the surrounding soft tissues. The resulting decrease in the size of the vaginal cavity creates more friction during sexual intercourse, often described as giving a woman back the vagina she had before children. When the muscles and ligaments in the vagina are tightened, they can then support the other internal structures including the bladder, bowel and womb (uterus). The perineum is often repaired as part of the treatment and the external labia can be reduced in size to improve overall comfort & appearance.
How should I prepare for the vaginal rejuvenation surgery?
During your consultation your surgeon will advise you to stop smoking, drinking and/or taking aspirin or certain other medications prior to your surgery as this can affect or slow down the healing process. Your surgeon will discuss this with you at length and guide you as to when would be suggested to resume taking these.
What risks are associated with vaginal rejuvenation surgery?
Any risks associated with a vaginal rejuvenation procedure are similar to that of any other surgical procedure that involves a general anaesthetic. Apart from possible bleeding and infection which is not common, there are no specific risks to be concerned about but your surgeon will explain the vaginal rejuvenation procedure to you in detail at your consultation.
How long does it take to recover after vaginal rejuvenation?
Generally there will be swelling, soreness and some bruising after surgery which should subside in a week or two. After a couple of days you should be able to walk around comfortably. Your final result may be a couple of months following surgery, but you are usually able to resume sexual activity within 4-6 weeks.
Is vaginal rejuvenation painful? What downtime can I expect?
Patients will undergo this procedure under general anaesthetic so you will feel no pain during surgery. After your procedure is complete, any pain or discomfort you may experience will be controlled effectively with medication provided by your surgeon and will usually subside within a few days.
You may experience some mild discomfort, swelling and some bruising, but this will usually disappear completely after 1-2 weeks. Most stitches will be dissolvable so you won't experience any discomfort – any to be removed will be done so at your 1 week post operative wound care appointment with a specialist nurse. Many of our patients return to work after one week but you will be advised that you may require two weeks. You must refrain from exercise and sexual intercourse until fully healed (around 6 weeks).
How much does vaginal rejuvenation cost?
Vaginal rejuvenation can combine various treatments including vaginal tightening and perineum repair (starting from £6000) and can include a labiaplasty (starting from £4000) , however often treatments can be bespoke and combined to suit your particular case. This can only be determined during a consultation with your surgeon, and following that an accurate price can be quoted.
