What is Vaginal Rejuvenation?

Vaginal rejuvenation is a combination of cosmetic gynaecology procedures which can effectively improve the appearance, sensation and function of your vagina and surrounding areas, including the labia and perineum. This is achieved by tightening the vaginal muscles and reducing the size of the labia.

The vagina is susceptible to many changes over the course of a woman’s life. Natural life events such as childbirth and the aging process can have a major impact on this part of the body, which may prompt a woman to feel concerned or self-conscious. There are a number of reasons for this.

A woman may feel self-conscious about the cosmetic appearance of this intimate area, particularly due to the effect of childbirth, which can cause issues like a stretched labia. The stretching of the vagina, which can happen due to childbirth and the aging process, can lead to a loss of sensation in the area, potentially impacting on a woman’s sexual satisfaction.

Other common issues include urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapse.

But vaginal rejuvenation treatment can successfully help to tackle one or all of these issues. A vaginal rejuvenation procedure may include perineal surgery, the area between the vagina and the rectum which can be damaged in childbirth, and labiaplasty, a straightforward procedure to reshape and reduce the protrusion of the labia. In less severe cases, this can include simple perineum and pelvic floor tightening

The range of treatment options will be explained in full by your surgeon during your consultation.

Whatever your personal requirements, the Cadogan Clinic provides London vaginal rejuventation surgeries for patients from across the UK, and we are proud to be trusted by countless women for these procedures.

Words from our clients:

Why do people have it?

Life changes can have a huge impact on the appearance and function of the vaginal area. A woman may choose to undergo vaginal rejuvenation surgery in London because she feels self-conscious about the appearance. Some patients opt for vaginal rejuvenation to enhance their sexual satisfaction.

Another common issue is stress incontinence, such as leaking urine when you sneeze, or urge incontinence, meaning you have to rush to the toilet at short notice.

Vaginal reconstruction is used to repair the physical trauma caused by childbirth, such as a damaged perineum. Childbirth and aging can also lead to vaginal prolapse – a bulge or heaviness in the vagina or lower abdomen area. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery will help to rectify all these issues.

Who is suitable?

Cadogan Clinic considers individuals fit for the procedure, if all of the following are true of them:

  • Physically and psychologically fit and healthy
  • Bothered by the appearance and function of their vagina, perhaps following childbirth or due to the onset of age
  • Have realistic expectations of what can be achieved by surgery

What are the options?

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is a bespoke treatment, tailored to meet the needs of the individual patient. The treatment may include one or all of the following:

This is surgery which is designed to tighten the vagina after it has become lax following childbirth or due to age. Vaginoplasty repairs the pelvic floor muscles and the perineal body at the entrance to the vagina. This helps with common problems such as urinary incontinence and a lack of sensation.

This labiaplasty procedure is more focused on the outward appearance of the genital area and involves reducing the size of the labia. This procedure is usually carried out for cosmetic purposes, but women with an overly long or large labia can find it causes pain or discomfort during sex and other activities such as a cycling or horse riding.

It is common for the perineum to tear during childbirth. Perineum and pelvic floor repair aims to improve the appearance of the perineum while simultaneously improving the muscle tone deep in the pelvic floor and vaginal muscles which may also have sustained damage.

What does it involve?

Vaginal rejuvenation is carried out here at the Cadogan Clinic under a general anaesthetic. A typical operation will take in the region of two hours, depending on how many procedures are being carried out.

If you are having vaginal tightening surgery (vaginoplasty), then the surgeon will join together the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina, therefore shortening it. This is kept in place using dissolvable stitches, before the excess vaginal lining is removed, tightening the surrounding soft tissues. When the muscles and ligaments in the vagina are tightened, they can then support the other internal structures including the bladder, bowel and womb (uterus). The perineum is often repaired as part of the treatment.

If the patient has opted for a labiaplasty to reduce the size of her labia, then the surgeon will use a scalpel or a laser to cut away skin from the labial lips to reduce their size or change their shape. The area is then stitched with dissolvable stitches.

Vaginal rejuvenation treatment is carried out as a day case, which means you will be allowed to go home with a friend or family member on the same day as your surgery.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgeons

We have invited a selection of the country's very best consultants to join us at the Cadogan Clinic so that you can be sure that whatever the nature of your treatment, you will be seeing one of the top practitioners in the country.

What to expect

Below you will find some key information to help you prepare for surgery and make necessary arrangements to ensure you have the support you need and that everything runs smoothly on the day.

Your journey with the Cadogan Clinic will start with up to two consultations with one of our leading specialist plastic surgeons at our award-winning premises in Chelsea. These consultations will take between 30 and 60 minutes.

During your consultation, your surgeon will ask about your expectations for your vaginal rejuvenation and talk about what will happen during the procedure. They will also explain how the procedure will affect you and the recovery period.

It is important that you are open and honest about what you hope to achieve through surgery to help ensure the best possible result. Your surgeon will be happy to answer any questions you may have at this point. It may be a good idea to write your questions down before attending the consultation. Having established what you want from the surgery, and what is possible given your anatomy, several key measurements will be made and standard clinical photography will be taken. Your medical history will be discussed and a physical examination will be carried out.

If your surgeon feels you are a good candidate for surgery, you are then invited to consider whether you would like to proceed with your vaginal rejuvenation or not following a two week 'cooling off' period. During this time, we recommend you consider the vaginal rejuvenation cost and downtime and whether this may affect your decision.

If you decide to go ahead with surgery, the next time you will return to the clinic is on the day of your vaginal rejuvenation. It is important that you prepare by taking the following measures ahead of surgery.

  • Stop smoking. Smoking can slow the healing process. If you smoke, your doctor will recommend that you stop smoking six weeks before surgery and during the recovery period. You should avoid smoking for at least 48 hours before your surgery.
  • Avoid taking certain medications. You should avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements in the week ahead of your surgery. Taking these can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Avoid alcohol. You should not drink any alcohol for 48 hours ahead of your surgery. This is because alcohol can hamper the healing process.
  • Arrange for help during recovery. Make plans for a friend or family member to drive you home after you leave the hospital and stay with you for at least the first night of your recovery at home.

In the six hours prior to surgery you must not consume food or any drink, other than small sips of clear fluid which will be allowed up to two hours before you are admitted to the clinic. Clear fluids include still water, black coffee and black tea.

Your vaginal rejuvenation will take place as a day case at our award-winning clinic in Chelsea. You will be given a general anaesthetic to put you to sleep for the operation. A typical vagina rejuvenation operation will take around two hours, depending on how many procedures you choose to have as part of this bespoke treatment.

If you are having a vaginoplasty then the surgeon will join together the stretched muscle at the back of the vagina, therefore shortening it. If you are having a labiaplasty to reduce the size of your labia, then the surgeon will use a scalpel or a laser to cut away skin from the labial lips to reduce their size or change their shape. Dissolvable stitches are used in our vaginal rejuvenation surgery, meaning you will not have to return to the clinic to have any sutures removed.

Following your vaginal rejuvenation surgery, you will recover in our ambulatory recovery rooms. You may feel a little drowsy but this often wears off within a few hours. Once you are able to eat and drink, and our specialist nursing team are happy that your initial recovery is complete, you will be allowed to leave the clinic with a friend or family member.

As this surgery involves a very delicate area of the body, you will likely experience some swelling, soreness and some bruising after your vaginal rejuvenation. This should settle down in a week or two. Any pain or discomfort you may experience after your vaginal rejuvenation will be controlled effectively with medication provided by your surgeon and will usually subside within a few days. You should be able to walk around comfortably within a couple of days of your vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Most people are able to return to work one to two weeks after surgery, but if your job involves heavy lifting, you may require more time off.

All exercise and sexual activity should be avoided until four to six weeks after surgery. It takes around six weeks to fully recover from vaginal rejuvenation.

Our on-call nursing service is open 24/7 during your recovery period to help with any questions or queries that you may have.

It is important that you follow all the aftercare instructions issued by your doctor. Failure to do so may impact on your recovery and the final result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vaginal Rejuvenation is a combination of surgical procedures which aim to tighten both the internal vaginal muscles and the perineum to help improve overall tone, strength and control-enhancing your sensitivity and sexual experience. In conjunction with this, it deals with the aesthetics of the external labia to neaten up and improve its appearance as this area is commonly stretched during a natural childbirth birth.

There are a number of benefits to vaginal rejuvenation surgery.

  • Improve vaginal laxity, effectively restoring the vagina to its pre-childbirth state

As mentioned before, vaginal rejuvenation is a bespoke treatment, made up of a combination of one or more different surgeries. So you will need to decide what you hope to achieve with vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Book a consultation with one of our expert surgeons to discuss your treatment and let us help you to achieve your body goals.

A vaginoplasty, otherwise known as vaginal tightening, is a single procedure which will tighten the internal cavity of the vagina, improving laxity and enhancing sexual sensation.

Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is made up of a combination of different treatments, including vaginoplasty, labiaplasty and perineum and pelvic floor repair, which together will help to improve the look and function both internally and externally.

Depending on what you hope to achieve, you may undergo some or all of these procedures as part of your vaginal rejuvenation treatment. A well-considered treatment plan can often achieve the return to a pre-childbirth state for each woman.

It is incredibly common for a woman to have concerns about the look of this area as well as its function as often a woman's vaginal muscles lose tone as part of the ageing process, or after childbirth and this can cause much embarrassment, discomfort, loss of sensitivity or friction during sexual intercourse, often resulting in frustration.

If you are bothered by the appearance and function of your vagina, due to childbirth, age or for any other reason, if you are physically and psychologically fit and healthy and have realistic expectations of what can be achieved by surgery, then you are considered a suitable candidate for vaginal rejuvenation treatment.

During your consultation your surgeon will advise you to stop smoking, drinking and/or taking aspirin or certain other medications prior to your surgery as this can affect or slow down the healing process.  Your surgeon will discuss this with you at length and guide you as to when would be suggested to resume taking these.

Any risks associated with a vaginal rejuvenation procedure are similar to that of any other surgical procedure that involves a general anaesthetic.  Apart from possible bleeding and infection which is not common, there are no specific risks to be concerned about but your surgeon will explain the vaginal rejuvenation procedure to you in detail at your consultation.

It takes six weeks to fully recover from vaginal rejuvenation, as long as you follow all the aftercare advice issued by your surgeon.

Generally there will be swelling, soreness and some bruising in your intimate area after surgery. This should subside in a week or two. After a couple of days you should be able to walk around comfortably.

Strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided until four to six weeks after surgery. Do not try and rush into these activities before your body has had a chance to fully heal.

Your final result may take a couple of months to fully settle.

Patients will undergo this procedure under general anaesthetic so you will feel no pain during surgery.  After your procedure is complete, any pain or discomfort you may experience will be controlled effectively with medication provided by your surgeon and will usually subside within a few days.

You may experience some mild discomfort, swelling and some bruising, but this will usually disappear completely after 1-2 weeks.   Most stitches will be dissolvable so you won't experience any discomfort – any to be removed will be done so at your 1 week post operative wound care appointment with a specialist nurse.  Many of our patients return to work after one week but you will be advised that you may require two weeks.  You must refrain from exercise and sexual intercourse until fully healed (around 6 weeks).
