What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a temporary facial injectable used to add volume to areas of the face and body to create a soft, natural, more youthful recontouring of the face.

Sculptra® works by stimulating collagen production over a period of time, with results lasting for up to 2 years, however with annual upkeep, you can maintain excellent results for 5-10 years.

Collagen continues to build throughout treatment, meaning that your natural store of collagen is maintained - and even increased - as you age and your store of collagen would otherwise naturally deplete.

Results are achieved by injecting Sculptra® into targeted areas of the face to create an overall volumizing and rejuvenating effect. Sculptra® can also be used to help contour the body.

Words from our clients:

Why do people have it?

Why do people have it & Who is suittable

This is an ideal treatment for anyone looking for a more youthful look that develops over time, with longer-lasting results and less frequent maintenance.

Even women as young as their 30's can benefit from having Sculptra treatments as it gives you the foundation for keeping your collagen strong in the long term. Because of the way it encourages your body's cells to create new collagen, it can dramatically improve your skin health, which gives your skin a nice dewy look, sometimes referred to as the 'Sculptra Glow'.

As with all injectable fillers and treatments, the technique is essential to achieving the best possible results. At Cadogan Clinic, our dermatologists and surgeons have extensive experience and use the most advanced techniques for the greatest outcome.

The benefits of a Sculptra are both cosmetic and psychological, and include:

  • Rejuvenated facial appearance
  • Smoother, tightened surface skin
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles
  • Restored volume and facial proportions
  • Boost collagen levels in the skin
  • Improved sense of emotional wellbeing

What does Sculptra Treatment involve?

Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic and biocompatible gel comprised of the same lactic acid that occurs naturally in the body - a very similar material to dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants.

Once injected, it works to generate collagen production that is significant enough to fill out facial contours, grooves, and hollows, and add a lifted effect to cheeks.

Results are not immediate but are first visible around 6 weeks after treatment, and then continue to reveal themselves slowly for up to 2 years following treatment.

What areas of the face are suitable for Sculptra Treatment?

Sculptra can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and add volume in all areas of the face impacted by the ageing process. The overall effect is to deliver a refreshed, rejuvenated facial appearance.

Common areas for treatment include the upper, mid and lower face:

  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Crow’s Feet
  • Forehead
  • Jawline
  • Mesolabial folds (mouth to chin lines)
  • Mouth
  • Nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines)
  • Temples

We can also inject Sculptra into the body in areas such as the buttocks, thighs and arms to improve body contouring.

Frequently Asked Questions

You are suitable for Sculptra facial fillers if you are seeking to restore facial volume and correct contour defects for longer periods of time than can be achieved by a typical dermal filler.

Sculptra seeks to:

  • Replace lost volume caused by ageing
  • Correct deep folds, wrinkles and contour defects
  • Increase dermal thickness
  • Deliver long-lasting natural appearance with results lasting for over 3 years

Sculptra can be used to add volume to all areas of the upper, mid and lower face, and support contouring efforts in all areas of the body.

We only offer consultant-led filler treatments, performed by highly trained cosmetic dermatologists or plastic surgeons.

Dermal filler treatments in the UK are currently unregulated meaning any aesthetic practitioner can perform them. This has led to the proliferation of low quality 'high street' providers, and filler treatments even being made available in non-medical environments such as gyms.

At the Cadogan Clinic, we believe such practices are extremely risky and highly correlated with unsafe and poor aesthetic outcomes.

Sculptra treatment typically takes 15 – 20 minutes, and no longer than 30 minutes. You may need more than one session to deliver optimal results at the outset.

Results are not immediate following Sculptra treatment. Results should first start to be visible after about 6 weeks. Best results will be visible 6 months after treatment.

Yes, the results of Sculptra last longer than alternative dermal filler treatment. Your results will last between 2 – 3 years, some time longer than dermal filler.

While results aren't permanent, they also can't be undone if you don't like the results or have a complication; you'll have to wait for them to fade over time.

As with all injectable treatments, you will be able to feel a little discomfort during Sculptra treatment as the injections are made.

Unlike surgical procedures, dermal fillers require no cuts, incisions or stitches to be made. Patients describe the sensation as feeling like a tiny scratch as the needle goes in, with a slight stinging sensation like the snap of an elastic band as the filler is applied.

For those feeling anxious, we can use a local anaesthetic to numb the area completely.

Sculptra injections are very safe. Possible side effects include temporary bruising, asymmetry, and the development of nodules under the skin.

Possible side effects include temporary bruising, asymmetry, and the development of nodules under the skin.

These small knots under the skin can occur immediately following injection, usually just as the result of swelling. If they're still there more than a month after treatment, you would need to get in touch with us.

Sculptra side effects also include keloid formation and hypertrophic scarring. Sculptra is not recommended for people with a history of keloids and hypertrophic scarring (which is similarly caused by excess collagen production).

Downtime is very minimal, and most patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately after their treatment.

It's common to see a temporary plumping effect right away, and additional volume around the injection site may linger for several days before fading.

You'll also probably experience some swelling and bruising in the same area. You should be able to cover any bruising with makeup.
