After being conferred his PhD with distinction from Cardiff University UK, he proceeded to become an accomplished researcher, rapidly developing key opinion leadership in his chosen field. He is an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group) and has published in world-leading journals including the Lancet, the British Journal of Surgery and speciality-leading journals.

This background informs his clinical practice with a depth of knowledge and he grounds it in current best evidence. His research ethos is inclusive and interdisciplinary. Dr Azzopardi firmly believes in the principle of life-long learning and teaching as key to nurturing the next generation of leaders in the field.
