What is Vaser Liposuction?

Vaser liposuction is liposuction that uses ultrasound waves to break up and liquify fat cells, in order to make them easier to extract from the body. VASER is an acronym for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance. This ultrasound technology uses powerful waves to disrupt the bonds between fat cells, melting down deep layers of stubborn fat. A cannula is then used to suck out the unwanted fat. This can be done without causing damage to the underlying tissues, blood vessels and nerves. This has given vaser liposuction a good reputation for body sculpting. It also claims to be less painful than traditional liposuction.

Vaser liposuction is a quick and very precise procedure for people who are trying to spot-treat fat deposits and reveal muscle tone underneath. Unlike other types of liposuction, vaser is minimally invasive and offers a shorter downtime.

Vaser can be used to treat one or several areas of the body at the same time. Downtime will depend on which parts of the body and how many parts of the body are treated in one session.

Why do people have it?

Why do people have it & Who is suittable

The ultimate goal of vaser liposuction is to sculpt the body. Vaser lipo is not used as a method of weight loss, but used to treat stubborn pockets of fat which cannot be lost through diet and exercise alone. A person who is considering vaser lipo may be experiencing one or more of the following:

  • Saddlebags (fat pockets on the outer thighs)
  • Bingo wings (fat in the arms)
  • Male breasts/man boobs (excess chest fat in men)
  • Muffin top or love handles (excess fat around the waist)
  • Bra fat (excess fat in the back)
  • Unwanted fat anywhere else on the body or face

Even people who are slender and a healthy weight can experience stubborn fatty deposits. This can make people feel self-conscious about their body which may trigger anxiety and depression. These self-conscious feelings may cause them to avoid certain situations, such as swimming and communal changing rooms. The presence of this unwanted fat may also affect clothing choices as it can affect the fit of particular items of clothing (for example, bingo wings can make it difficult to wear certain styles of top).

Vaser liposuction can sculpt the body as desired by removing stubborn fat pockets, restoring self-confidence, allowing you the freedom to do and wear what you want.

Who is suitable?

Cadogan Clinic considers individuals fit for vaser liposuction if all of the following are true of them:

  • Physically and psychologically fit and healthy
  • Desire for a more contoured body
  • Have realistic expectations of what can be achieved by surgery
  • Committed to a healthy lifestyle to maintain results
  • Do not have any heart, kidney or blood disorders

It is important to bear in mind that vaser lipo is only intended to sculpt the body, and should not be viewed as a weight loss tool. An ideal candidate for the procedure should have good skin elasticity and be a healthy weight.

How does the procedure work?

Vaser liposuction works by disrupting the connection between the patient’s fatty tissue and the muscles underneath without hurting the underlying healthy tissue. It is considered to be a more gentle and precise form of liposuction, but can be a highly effective method if carried out by a highly-skilled practitioner.

A saline solution or tumescent fluid mixed with a local anaesthetic will be injected into the treatment area or areas, numbing it and leaving you unable to feel any pain in the area. A series of microcannulas are then inserted through a series of tiny incisions in the skin. Ultrasound waves are delivered to the area of fat via these cannulas, gently melting down this stubborn fat. This fat is then removed via a cannula. The cannulas are removed and the incisions are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Vaser liposuction is carried out as a day case, meaning that you can go home on the same day as the procedure. After the treatment, you will be moved into a room to recover before you are allowed home accompanied by a friend or family member.

You will have to wear absorbable pads or compression garments, depending on which areas have been treated, during the recovery period. Swelling and soreness is to be expected after vaser liposuction, but this should settle within seven to ten days after the procedure.

Compared to traditional liposuction , vaser lipo has a shorter downtime and you may be back to work within two weeks, depending on the amount of treatment that you have had.

The end result of your liposuction should start to become apparent at around three to four months after the procedure, but sometimes it may take up to eight months to see the final result. This varies from patient to patient and also depends on which areas of the body that have been treated. As well as resulting in a more contoured, pleasing body shape, vaser liposuction can also have the effect of tightening the skin in the treatment area. However it is important that a patient has a good degree of skin elasticity before going ahead with treatment.

What areas can be treated with Vaser Liposuction?

There are a number of different parts of the body and face that can be successfully treated with vaser liposuction.

  • Abdomen: Vaser lipo can treat the upper and lower portions of the stomach, together or separately, including a stubborn muffin top, where body fat extends over the waistline of trousers or skirts.
  • Face: Chin and neck fat can all be tackled with vaser liposuction.
  • Hips and waist: Vaser lipo on the waist and hips is a popular choice among women who are looking to achieve an hourglass shape, as well as being an effective way to shift stubborn ‘love handles’.
  • Thighs: Vaser liposuction is used to eliminate ‘saddlebags’, which is the result of stubborn fatty deposits stored on the outer thigh.
  • Knees and ankles: Fat accumulates in the inner knee and in the ankle area.
  • Back: Vaser lipo can treat excess back fat which spills out from around the bra straps in women.
  • Buttocks: Treatment will help to sculpt the buttocks and bring prominent buttocks back into proportion with the rest of the body.
  • Arms: Vaser liposuction is a popular treatment for ‘bingo wings’, caused by fat deposits in the upper arms.
  • Breast reduction: Vaser lipo is a popular choice among men who are seeking breast reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vaser liposuction is a far more gentle method of liposuction and results in a quicker recovery time than traditional liposuction. Those who have had the procedure say the recovery process is less painful than traditional liposuction. Vaser lipo allows for a more precise targeting of fatty deposits. However the procedure itself takes longer than traditional liposuction and vaser lipo is not as effective as removing larger areas of fat.

Vaser liposuction is a similar procedure to traditional liposuction, though there are some important differences. The biggest difference is that vaser liposuction allows for more precision in the fat removal process. It isn’t a tool to remove large fat deposits.

However vaser lipo is not as effective as traditional liposuction. Traditional lipo is capable of removing more fat cells and produces more noticeable results.

Vaser lipo is a less invasive procedure than traditional liposuction.

Vaser liposuction prices in the UK start from the few thousand pound mark and can go up to £10,000. This depends on how many different parts of the body are being treated and which areas of the anatomy.

Results from vaser liposuction can be permanent. But the way a person’s body looks after recovery is partially dependent on the lifestyle choices they make. After getting vaser liposuction, you will need to keep up a healthy diet and exercise routine so that the body doesn’t regain the fat lost.

It is important to note that your body will continue to age and this natural process will change the way your body looks over time.

Around three to five litres of fat can be safely removed from the body in one session of vaser liposuction. Alternatively fat removal should be no more than four to five percent of your body weight. If too much fat is removed in one go, this can cause serious health problems and leave you with unnatural contouring, which may be permanent.

If you want more fat removed, then this can be done at a follow up session five or six weeks later. If you want a larger amount of fat removed, speak to your surgeon about the best liposuction method for you.

If you have decided to undergo vaser liposuction, it is important that you have good skin elasticity. This means that once the fat has been removed, the skin will retract, meaning large amounts of loose skin will not be left behind.

However if you have poor skin elasticity, then the surgeon may recommend vaser liposuction and abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, to remove any excess skin. This will result in a longer recovery period. You can discuss this with your surgeon at your initial consultation at the Cadogan Clinic.
