Consultant Plastic Surgeon Mr Tunc Tiryaki shared his insight into receding hairlines with Men’s Health, talking about the latest regenerative treatments to help restore hair growth. The article explores everything from the causes of hair loss, haircuts, styling, vitamins, medication and surgical treatments. Below, Mr Tiryaki shares his wisdom on male hair loss.
The average person has around 100,000 hairs on the scalp which grow from follicles. Eventually, these hairs fall out (it can be dozens each day) and are replaced by new hairs. When the hair follicle becomes damaged or decreases in size, the growth cycle is hindered and the hair stops growing.
A receding hairline in men is often genetic, the hair follicles may become too sensitive to male hormones and growth is slowed and eventually stopped. It is often the first stage of balding.
Whilst age is one of the biggest factors for a receding hairline, it can affect young men also. Hair loss is also a natural part of ageing.

Certain medications and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy can accelerate hair loss. Severe stress, anxiety and illness can also cause hair loss, however, in this instance, it will normally grow back.
There is evidence to suggest that diet can also impact hair loss and affect the integrity of the hair follicle. Protein, iron and vitamin B are important nutrients to support healthy hair. Smoking and drug usage may also play a role in hair loss.
Vitamins and minerals are important for a healthy body and healthy hair follicles. A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, protein and antioxidants is important for supporting cell and body function. The following vitamins have been found to help support healthy hair growth, which can be incorporated as part of a healthy diet:
The latest and most powerful innovation in regenerative medicine is a procedure that harnesses the body’s powerful regenerative mechanism which delivers natural, effective results.
The procedure uses only the patient’s own cells and the results are natural, effective, relatively painless and long-lasting. The procedure takes approximately 90 minutes and results are evident after a month, continuing to develop as the cells repair over time.
