What is a Mons Lift?

A Mons Lift, also known as Mons Pubis Reduction surgery, or a Monsplasty is a surgical procedure which removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the pad sitting on top of the pubic bone - known as the mons pubis. This results in a flatter, firmer mons pubis which may increase self-esteem and make wearing certain clothing easier and more comfortable.

Mons Lift can use various surgical techniques according to your individual concerns. If excess skin is your concern, your surgeon will cut this away - known as an excision. On the other hand, if fat accumulation is your issue, Liposuction will be carried out, followed by skin excision if required.

If mons pubis Liposuction is required as part of your lift, skin excision isn’t always necessary afterwards. If you have only been carrying excess weight for a short period of time and you are young, then the skin should have enough elasticity to return to its original shape. If you are having a lot of weight removed, or if you are older with reduced skin elasticity, then you will find that excess sagging skin may be left behind after your mons pubis Liposuction.

It is common for Mons Lift to be combined with other procedures such as a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty). The Tummy Tuck will tighten the skin on the abdomen, therefore making any excess fat in the mons pubis area appear more prominent.

Why do people have a Mons Lift?

For many people undergoing Mons Lift (sometimes referred to as mons pubis reduction), their main goal is to improve the appearance of the area. However, Mons Lift can also be carried out for functional reasons. If excess skin is causing the mons pubis to drop down in front of the urethra and vulva, this can interfere with urination and make sexual intercourse difficult or painful. People with an enlarged mons pubis may find it difficult to maintain a good level of personal hygiene, particularly in the genital area. A lapse in personal hygiene in this area may lead to further health problems.

Excess skin and fat in the mons pubis area is caused by pregnancy, weight changes, hormonal fluctuations and previous surgeries in the lower abdominal area.

Mons pubis reduction surgery London can also help to improve mental wellbeing and boost self-esteem, making it more comfortable to wear certain clothing and take part in activities such as sport. Mons lift before and after cases can therefore procure lifestyle-enhancing results, not just physical or aesthetic.

Who is suitable for a monsplasty?

Your specialist consultant surgeon will assess whether you are suitable for a Mons Lift in your one-to-one consultation.

They will examine your Mons Pubis area and discuss your concerns surrounding excess fat or skin. They will discuss your expectations of surgery and ensure you understand the individual results that are possible for you from Mons Pubis Reduction. They will also assess your overall physical and mental health to make sure you are suitable for a general anaesthetic procedure, this may include your weight, and any medical conditions you have. You must be over 18 to have this procedure.

What is involved in a Mons Lift?

A Mons Lift works by improving the shape and size of the Mons Pubis - making it appear less prominent and improving the contours of the lower abdomen.

If you have excess fat stored around the mons pubis, Liposuction will be carried out as part of your London Mons Lift. Liposuction removes stubborn fat cells which are not responding to diet and exercise. A cannula is inserted into the treatment area and these fat cells are broken up using vibrations or high-pressure water jets the fat is removed from the body.

Although Liposuction removes any excess fat, it is not able to address excess skin. If you have poor skin elasticity, then you will need any loose or sagging excess skin to be surgically removed.

If you have lost a large amount of weight, it is common for loose, excess skin to be left behind. This is because the expanded fat cells stretch the skin, and when these fat cells have shrunk, there is often not enough elasticity present for the skin to return to the skin’s original position.

If loose skin only is the problem, then the surgeon will carry out your Mons Lift by cutting away the excess skin. The mons pubis will be sculpted by tightening the underlying tissues and muscle before being secured into place using sutures.

Mons Lift Procedure

When you opt for Mons Lift at Cadogan Clinic - what can you expect and how should you prepare?

You will meet your surgeon for up to two consultations at our award-winning Chelsea based clinic to discuss Mons Lift surgery and your desired results. Consultations are usually up to 60 minutes and your surgeon will examine your mons pubis area and explain the best approach for you.

To get the most from your consultation, we recommend writing down any questions you have for your surgeon ahead of time, so you feel fully prepared. Your surgeon will also conduct a general health and wellness check, including your height, weight and blood pressure and take clinical photos.

Your surgeon will then send your surgical plan through to your patient advisor. This may include a few options for treatments or procedures that will address your concerns. If the surgeon has recommended Mons Lift for you, your advisor will explain the plan, pricing and offer available surgical dates to you, before giving you a mandatory two week cooling off period to allow you to consider whether you wish to proceed with your surgery.

If you decide to go ahead with your Mons Lift, you will next visit the clinic on the day of your surgery. You will be asked to prepare for your procedure in the following way:

  • You will need to complete your pre-operative paperwork to allow your surgical team (surgeon, anaesthetist and nurses) to review all of your medical and psychological information and advise on any changes you need to make in the run up to your surgery.
  • If you smoke or vape, your surgeon will ask you to stop for six weeks before surgery can take place. This is vital to ensure your recovery is smooth and you heal fully and properly.
  • You will also be asked to cut down on drinking alcohol as excessive alcohol consumption can also impact the healing and recovery process.
  • In the week before your procedure, avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin, and any herbal supplements as these can increase the risk of bleeding
  • You will need to organise a chaperone to come and collect you after the surgery. This should be a family member or friend who can either drive you or accompany you in a taxi and stay with you for the first night
  • In the 6 hours before you arrive at the clinic, you mustn’t eat any solid food or consume any juice or milk (including tea or coffee). You can have sips of clear liquids (water, or black tea and coffee) up to 2 hours before you arrive at the clinic

On your surgery day, you will be asked to arrive at the clinic an hour before your scheduled surgery time. You will speak with your surgeon, anaesthetist and the nurses to ask any final questions, and to be prepared for surgery with any marking the surgeon may need to do.

You will then be taken into theatre, where your anaesthetist will administer your general anaesthetic, so you are asleep and unaware of your surgery. All procedures at Cadogan Clinic are performed using TIVA (Total Intravenous Anaesthesia) which minimises post-operative sickness and nausea and allows for a faster initial recovery.

Your surgeon will then carry out your Mons Lift. After the procedure is complete, you will be taken to our recovery ward, where you will wake up from the anaesthetic and a nurse will monitor your vital health signs. Once you are comfortable, you will be taken into our ambulatory ward where you will have something to eat and drink and a nurse will talk you through any medication and aftercare you need to understand once you leave. When you are ready, the nurses will ask your chaperone to come and collect you and you will be discharged.

The first few days following surgery may be slightly uncomfortable. Most patients are up and moving within a day and able to bathe normally in three days.

You should expect some swelling and bruising in the surgical area which should heal within the first couple of weeks following surgery. You must avoid strenuous activity for four to six weeks following your Mons Lift.

One week after your surgery you will have an appointment with our nurses. They will assess your incisions, remove any stitches and make sure you are healing well. They will answer any questions you have at this stage and explain how to look after your dressings.

Six weeks after your procedure you will meet with your surgeon so they can discuss your recovery and results. After six weeks, if you have any questions or concerns, you will still be able to contact the team and speak with one of our specialist nurses.

Frequently Asked Questions

The mons pubis is a mounded area of fatty tissue that covers the pubic bone. Although both sexes have mons pubis, it is far more prominent in women.

The mons pubis is shaped like an inverted triangle and stretches from the top of the natural pubic hair line down to just above the clitoris. The mons pubis is naturally covered in pubic hair. Inside the mons pubis there are glands which secrete pheromones, which are responsible for sexual attraction. The mons pubis also acts as a protective ‘cushion’ during sexual intercourse.

There are a number of reasons why someone may have an oversized mons pubis.

If you gain weight, excess fat tends to accumulate in the mons pubis, causing it to bulge and enlarge and stretch the covering skin. When this weight is lost, without enough elasticity, the excess skin doesn’t return to its normal size and sags. Sometimes this tendency to accumulate fat in the area is inherited from your parents.

Women who have previously undergone a C-section may find themselves left with a bulging mons pubis. This is because after a C-section the skin around the scar may stay right against the tissues, but this is not the same for the skin below it.

Oestrogen can cause increased fat deposition in your mons pubis, hence the mons pubis is naturally more prominent in women.

Mons pubis reduction can be carried out as a stand alone procedure or in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures. It is common to have mons reduction alongside a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or it may be a component of mummy makeover surgery. A mummy makeover is tailored to meet the needs of the individual patient and typically involves procedures that target the breasts, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs and vagina.

You could also combine mons surgery with gynaecological procedures, such as vaginoplasty, labiaplasty or vaginal rejuvenation.

Mons lift surgery is commonly performed in conjunction with a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

When a person has lost large amounts of weight, a lot of loose, sagging skin is quite often left behind. A tummy tuck removes this excess skin and the muscles and fascia of the abdominal wall are tightened to achieve a tighter, flatter-looking stomach. Mons reduction is often carried out at the same time as an enlarged mons pubis is more noticeable once the abdomen has been tightened and sculpted. Our expert surgeon will be able to discuss this combination of treatments with you at your consultation.

It takes six weeks to make a full recovery from mons pubis reduction surgery.

In the immediate aftermath of mons surgery, you may experience some discomfort and bruising or swelling which may last for up to three weeks. You should be reasonably mobile within a day or two of surgery. You can return to work after one week, although you may need an extended period off work if your job is physically demanding or involves heavy lifting. Exercise, including going to the gym, can be resumed between four to six weeks.

It may take longer to recover if you are combining your mons reduction combined with other surgeries or treatments.

Although mons reduction is a safe and low-risk surgery, there are risks associated with liposuction carried out on any area of the body. Common side effects include bruising, swelling, temporary numbness, inflammation and fluid coming from incisions. Very rarely, liposuction can cause; lumpy or uneven results, bleeding under the skin, persistent numbness that can last for months, changes in skin colour, build-up of fluid in the lungs, a blood clot in the lungs or damage to the internal organs.

Any type of operation also carries a risk of excessive bleeding, developing a blood clot in a vein,

infection or an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic. However the risk of any of these happening during your treatment is small.

If you have mons pubis liposuction, then this leaves minimal scarring behind. For skin excision, a small cut will be made across the bikini line, which will result in a small scar. However this scar will be hidden by clothing. If there is a large amount of excess skin to remove, then a vertical cut may be necessary.

We also recommend meeting one of our aestheticians to discuss ongoing treatment to support the healing process if required.

You should refrain from pentrative sexual activity for one month after your mons reduction surgery. This is because the mons pubis acts as a ‘cushion’ during sexual intercourse and any friction can exaccerbate discomfort, bruising and swelling in the area. You should only return to sexual activity when you feel ready to do so. If you find that sexual intercourse causes pain or discomfort of the mons pubis, stop and try again after more time has passed.

The Risks of a Mons Lift

Before undergoing a Mons Lift, it is vital to be aware of the potential risks and complications. Your surgeon will discuss all of these with you in your consultation and will make sure you understand how they may impact your surgery and any steps you need to take to reduce your personal risks.

  • Hematoma - This is the build-up of blood beneath the skin and will require treatment from your surgeon
  • Poor wound healing - Healing complications or infection can affect the incision sites
  • Asymmetry - Occasionally, the mons pubis may uneven
  • Seroma - This is the formation of a lump under the skin caused by build up of fluid around the incision sites. This will require treatment from your surgeon.

In the event of a complication or less than optimal outcome, a secondary surgery may be required. The need for a revision surgery can arise due to factors beyond the surgeon’s control. Our skilled consultant surgeons are qualified professionals who have performed Mons Lift numerous times. The need for a secondary surgery is not a reflection of your surgeon’s skill or qualifications.

It is also important to acknowledge that any surgical procedure carries a slight risk of:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Allergic reaction to general anaesthetic
  • Infection at the surgical site
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in a vein)
