Love Handles

Love handles are the localized deposits of fat of the loins or flanks. They overlie the iliac crest, which is the top of the hip bone to which the flank muscles of the abdominal wall are attached.

In the lean toned individual, this muscle forms an attractive bulge leading around towards the groin.

A little extra fat may add to the appearance, but bigger deposits form unnatural swellings brimming over the waistband. This is the bugbear of the otherwise fit person wearing jeans or shorts. These swellings can reach large proportions and considerable deformity. They are a single area but are often associated with other fatty deposits of the hips and back.

These are all inherited conditions, which can to some extent be minimized by keeping slim. However, a slim, fit body with a moderate love handles do appear an obvious flaw. Swimsuits, sportswear and fitted dresses become a terrible trial. Naturally, patients do seek improvement at an early stage.

Fortunately, treatment is very effective. For those who are seeking a moderate improvement SculpSure, a non-surgical treatment, may be the easy answer. Most have a couple of treatments a few weeks apart. We, at the Cadogan Clini,c prefer the Sculpsure laser  to fat freezing (CoolSculpt), as it works well and avoids the occasional complications of lumpy tender fat and paradoxical fat overgrowth.

 Maximal fat removal will require liposuction. This is generally no more painful and simply performed . You would be fit for the beach within 3 weeks, when the bruising has subsided.  As middle age approaches and the back becomes involved,  liposuction sculpturing of the whole area, can give dramatic improvements. The associated flat bottom may be contoured by replacing some of the fat removed into the upper part of the buttocks.
