How to Cover Spots

How to Cover Spots

Wednesday, August 12, 2020

Dr Amelie Seghers shares her expert advice with Popsugar on how to effectively cover spots with makeup. With around 95% of people suffering from acne at some point in their lives, many choose to conceal these blemishes with makeup and concealer, but some spots are easier to cover than others and some makeup products may exacerbate acne.

Before undertaking any skincare routine or makeup application, Dr Seghers stresses the importance of ensuring hands are thoroughly washed and dried beforehand in order to avoid the spread of bacteria, which could cause a secondary infection and aggravate the acne.  She also highlights the necessity to effectively remove makeup in the evening, regardless of whether makeup has been applied, as well as cleansing in the morning to help promote healthy skin. The skin should be cleansed gently, avoiding any harsh exfoliants.

When selecting skin care products for acne-prone skin, Dr Seghers urges to avoid greasy and oily products as these may clog the pores and suggests selecting non-comedogenic products, which will prevent the pores from getting blocked.  She also advises using mineral-based foundations which are often powder-based and are oil-free. Products which are fragranced can cause irritation, so should be avoided.

It’s important to keep an eye on the expiry date and avoid using old products. There is an image on the packaging which will highlight how long the product should be used after opening e.g. 3M, 6M, 9M, 12M. Also, be mindful of using organic products as the preservatives used (if any) will not be as powerful and the products are likely to expire faster.
