The whole body ages. Some parts are more visible and also more exposed to the sun, therefore will age faster – such as the face, hands and upper chest (décolleté).
Putting aside the internal organs, we are more concerned with the outer appearance. Muscle mass deteriorates, skin loses tone and texture and bones soften affecting the whole body. To slow this progress, we must keep our bodies strong with a good diet, regular exercise, limited sun exposure and getting enough Vitamin D.
The all-important skin needs regular maintenance. It needs to be clean and moisturised and not take too much sun, particularly if you have fair skin which burns easily.
Skin will lose tone, becoming lax. This tendency is increased dramatically by the hormones of pregnancy and weight gain and subsequent weight loss. This affects more obviously the breasts, tummy, arms and thighs.
At the Cadogan Clinic, we have non-surgical lasers, radiofrequency and ultrasound to tighten skin and reduce fat. However, often surgery is required where the need is greatest. A good example is the Mummy Makeover in which the breasts are lifted (mastopexy) and the tummy tucked (Full Abdominoplasty and Mini Brazilian Abdominoplasty). Some patients will, of course, need attention elsewhere.
