The skin of the abdominal wall naturally becomes stretched when a person puts on weight or falls pregnant. Unfortunately for some this skin will not retract after pregnancy or when this extra weight is lost, necessitating tummy tuck surgery.

Deciding on tummy tuck surgery or even a mini tummy tuck is a big decision. Make sure that you are fully informed before deciding by reading through the most common questions and answers surrounding tummy tuck liposuction.
A mini-abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck consists of tightening the skin of the lower half of the abdominal wall just below the umbilicus. Liposuction is also sometimes used where necessary to thin out the rest of the abdominal wall and plication or tightening of the fascia that covers the recti muscles. These muscles tend to become stretched and pulled apart by increased tension from inside the abdominal cavity which is usually caused by pregnancy.
In a full abdominoplasty or abdominal reduction, the skin of the whole of the abdominal wall is tightened including all the skin between the umbilicus and the eventual low abdominal scar. In full tummy tuck surgery, the remaining skin is pulled down and stitched at the lower level with the old umbilicus of the tummy button brought through this skin flap at the appropriate level.
It is mostly possible to remove surplus skin leaving only a low scar across the lower part of the abdomen and pubic area. This scar may turn upwards at the ends in order to tighten the skin of the waist. Patients who undergo full tummy tuck surgery end up, not only with a low abdominal scar turning up towards the lateral ends, but also with a scar around the umbilicus.
