Abdominal liposuction is also known as Abdominal Lipoplasty, Abdominal Liposculpture or Suction Lipectomy. This is primarily a cosmetic treatment which removes excess fat from the abdominal area by surgery. It has become one of the most common forms of body contouring and sculpting cosmetic treatments in the world. Liposuction is generally safer than most contouring operations such as tummy tucks, by avoiding skin excision and facial tightening.

Apart from the obvious cosmetic benefits of abdominal liposuction involving body aesthetics, there are also a host of other advantages to this surgery.
• Stomach lipo helps immediate removal of fat from areas previously unresponsive to dieting or localised exercises.
• Increases body confidence.
• Acts as a motivating agent for patients, to follow up the procedure with an active, healthy lifestyle.
All healthy adults with a localised fatty bulge of the abdominal wall are considered ideal for abdominal liposuction. This will include the fit athlete wanting to reveal their six pack and the plumper person with an unwanted bulge. Patients who are medically unfit, may be suitable for treatment under local anaesthesia and those with loose, skin may accept that the skin will remain loose if they know the contour will be improved. Techniques such as Smart Lipo MPX and BodyTite can be used to tighten skin. Patients with abdominal hernias will need to have their hernias repaired before the liposuction.
As with any medical procedure, it is important to maintain realistic expectations regarding results, and these will be discussed at the consultation with the consultant.
Personal trainers may suggest abdominal exercises and nutritionists advocate particular diets to remove localised fat, but these will only reduce fat overall and not target the specific bulges, which is where stomach liposuction comes in.
External radio frequency and injections such as Lipodissolve and Mesotherapy are much less effective.
There is however one new very promising non invasive way of reducing fat cells and that is LipoSonix, which is an external ultrasound technique. During the liposuction procedure, fat cells are removed to give a permanent change in shape, as they cannot be regenerated. It is as final as amputating a limb! The maximum amount of fat that can be removed without the need to transfuse is about 4kg.
Before the stomach lipo procedure: Patients are asked to sign a consent form ensuring that patients understand the scope, nature, risks involved and the potential outcomes of the stomach lipo surgery. Patients being treated under sedation or general anaesthesia must avoid food for six hours before surgery and water for two.
After abdomen liposuction: Fluid including local anaesthetic injected during surgery will leak from stab incisions for some hours afterwards and this is blood stained. The pain is not severe, being that of a bad bruise. Simple pain killers, such as Paracetamol are usually adequate. Patients may return to normal activity as they feel able. Exercise will not affect the final result.
