The Cadogan Clinic is a world centre for liposuction. Bryan Mayou, the pioneering London surgeon, credited with introducing liposuction to the UK and Bryan has worked in both the US and Britain.
He is renowned for his measured approach, which avoids fashionable, “trendy” procedures in favour of well-researched techniques. Currently, Bryan uses the BodyJet technique of liposuction, where a tube delivers a mixture of anaesthetic and saline, which loosens the fat before it is sucked out.
We constantly evaluate techniques to provide our patients with the newest and best, and tried and tested.
We are aware that new does not necessarily mean better. We have discarded numerous techniques still promoted elsewhere. The most important part of the procedure is always the cosmetic surgeon and each knows what works best for him in each circumstance.
We’ve included the answers to your most frequently asked questions about liposuction surgery:
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture or suction assisted lipectomy, is a technique to remove unwanted fat deposits. The Cadogan Clinic makes use of the Smartlipo MPX laser system to treat patients presenting for liposuction due to unwanted cosmetic fat.
Fat Removal (Liposuction) surgery can be used on the:
Indications for SmartLipo MPX laser treatment are removal of unwanted subcutaneous fat from neck, knees, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, abdomen, waist and back area of the upper arm.
The procedure is done under a local anaesthetic.
Redness of the treated area after treatment is common and will subside in 48-72 hours. Pain, swelling, discomfort or irritation may be present for 10-14 days. After treatment you are advised to wear a compression garment for 4-5 days.
Sometimes call liposculpture. This is the basic technique that Bryan Mayou introduced the United Kingdom from France in 1982. Local anaesthetic with adrenaline is introduced into the area to be treated and the fat is aspirated through a hollow tube or cannulae. Beautiful results can be achieved with the use of fine cannulae and meticulous technique. When large quantities of saline are used to splint floppy tissues, the technique is called Tumescent Liposuction SLA.
BodyJet liposuction is an intriguing new technique, developed in Germany by Dr Harmut Meyer. The local anaesthesia, adrenaline and saline are pumped ahead of the cannulae, loosening the fat and providing the anaesthesia at the same time. In many situations this makes the procedure more effective and less traumatic for the patient. It is often carried out under local anaesthesia.
The technique has the risk of burning the skin and causing unevenness. Internal ultrasound applied through the suction cannulae. Bryan Mayou developed this technique early in the United Kingdom and it was later taken on in a big way in the United States, however, this time Bryan Mayou had come to the conclusion, which he still holds, that it does not offer anything that other techniques do not offer but it does increase the risk of local burns and tethering of the skin.
There are various techniques to apply External Ultrasound to destroy the fat beneath the skin without the need for any skin excision. Bryan Mayou again developed the technique in its early stages in the UK, this time introduced from the United States, and concluded that it did not produce an unnecessary expensive technique, which produced little results. There were no advantages in using the technique over conventional methods, but there were significant risks, particularly of burning or damaging the skin.
