Breast Reduction

The way a woman feels about her breasts is very personal. It can be difficult to have to deal with constant attention focussed on your chest area and never being comfortable in a bra, tight top or even a social situation. Medically, oversized breasts or breasts that differ in size or shape from one another can cause a woman backache or skin rashes beneath the breasts. Breast reduction surgery is more than a cosmetic procedure; it can finally make a woman feel comfortable, both medically and emotionally.

Breast Reduction Procedure Questions and Answers

To help you make up your mind about undergoing a breast reduction procedure, we’ve included the answers to your most frequently asked questions about this kind of surgery.

Who Qualifies for a Breast Reduction Procedure?

Most women who ask for breast reduction surgery are those who have fully developed breasts. A breast reduction procedure is also warranted in some younger women who have overwhelming problems with the size of their breasts.

What Does Breast Reduction Surgery Involve?

In breast reduction surgery, the consultant removes excess skin, fat and breast tissue giving them a smaller and firmer appearance.

What Should You Know About Breast Reduction Surgery Aftercare?

Breast Feeding and Pregnancy

Most patients who have had a breast lift will not be able to breast feed after the procedure. Whether you can or not will mainly depend on the number of milk ducts left intact after surgery and whether your nipple is still connected to them.

Age and Changes in Body Weight

Because skin loses its elasticity with age, your breasts may become droopy as you age. If you gain weight after the procedure, your breasts will also change in size and weight.

Mammography

While breast reduction surgery has no effect on your risk of developing breast cancer, you should inform your radiographer that you have had breast lift surgery prior to a mammography.

Sensation

Temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation are reported by about 15% of women after having breast reduction surgery.

Scars

Your surgeon will aim to leave as little scar tissue on your skin as possible, however, any scar tissue that is created from the breast lift procedure is permanent. You should have a discussion in regards to scar placement with your surgeon prior to the operation so that your results meet your expectations.
