Breast Implant Surgery Questions and Answers

To set your mind at ease about choosing breast implant surgery, we’ve included the answers to your most frequently asked questions about breast augmentation.

Who Usually has Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation is increasingly carried out to redress the effects of breast-feeding and pregnancy on a woman’s shape. Ptosis is the medical term for the condition, which involves skin laxity and nipple descent after pregnancy, and is directly treated through surgical procedures at many of the major cosmetic surgery clinics, including Cadogan Clinic. The insertion of implants for breast augmentation is also sometimes combined with breast lift operations, which reshape the breast following a loss of suppleness and firmness with age.

What is Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation or breast enlargement surgery involves inserting implants behind the breast. Breast implants are made of elastic silicone and are usually filled with silicone gel, salt water or soya bean oil.

Your consultant will discuss with you what type, shape and size of implant will best suit you. Some implants are round and others are shaped more like a natural breast. Either can give excellent results. The general life expectancy of breast implants is 10 years, though some implants can stay in much longer without problems.

What Does Breast Enlargement Surgery Involve?

The consultant will make cuts in the crease under your breasts and possibly around your nipples. The implants are then inserted under the breast tissue or under the chest muscle. Occasionally a small tube may be inserted in either one or in both breasts to drain any excess fluid and then removed within 24 to 48 hours of the surgery. The cuts are closed with absorbable sutures and compression dressings are applied along with a sports bra.

How Long Does the Breast Augmentation Procedure Take?

You are required to come in one hour prior to your breast implant surgery procedure. The procedure lasts between one and a half and two hours. Recovery after the operation is generally three hours.

What Type of Anaesthetic is Used in the Breast Enhancement Procedure?

The procedure is conducted under general anaesthetic. The anaesthetist will put you to sleep before the procedure and will remain during the procedure to give you analgesia so that when you wake up you experience minimal discomfort.

What Happens on the Day of Breast Augmentation Surgery?

You will be asked to come into the clinic one hour prior to surgery where the nurses will welcome you and check and complete your admission assessment. You will have the opportunity to talk to your surgeon and ask him/her any questions that you may have.
The anaesthetist will also assess you before you go into surgery. After the procedure you will rest in the recovery area where the anaesthetist and the recovery nurse will look after you.

When you’re ready, you will be transferred to the ambulatory care unit, where you will be offered refreshments and a light lunch. The nurse in the ambulatory care unit will look after you. The consultant will also see you and explain the follow-up checks you should expect.

Once you feel well enough you will be able to go home. Someone will need to pick you up and you are also advised to have someone at home with you for at least 24 hours following your breast enlargement surgery to look after you.

What Will the Breast Enlargement Surgery Result Look Like?

A degree of swelling and bruising is normal following breast enlargement surgery. Your breasts will take several weeks to settle and adapt a more natural position and feel. Wearing a soft supportive bra without underwire such as a sports bra can help to relieve any bruising and discomfort by supporting the breast.

What Patients Say

"My experience at the Cadogan clinic as a whole has been nothing but short of wonderful.  The service I received from Rosa Guthrie has been excellent and as she was my first point of contact at the clinic it was an important factor in my decision too.  I would recommend Dr Jian Farhadi without a second thought.  His advice has been invaluable and really has helped me make the right decision when I was faced with a range of options which quite frankly I found a little daunting at first! He helped me clarify and prioritise my thoughts on what to expect from the surgery.  He is honest and sets your expectations from early on and to top these qualities he is extremely personable and easy to get along with.  After extensive online research I planned to visit a number of surgeons to get different opinions but never pursued that plan as I didn't feel it was necessary.  Mr Farhadi in my opinion is as good a surgeon you will find for breast augmentation surgeries.  His team are equally as friendly and professional and although I was anxious before the operation I felt I was in really good hands and any worries evaporated the morning I walked into the clinic!

The operation itself went very well and the whole recovery process has been painless (although this may be subjective) and much easier than I would have ever anticipated.  I felt that sticking to the post-operative advice really helped.  As a whole my experience has been fantastic, I am extremely happy with the results.  My breasts look amazing and I love them.  If I were to consider another enlargement operation I would only consider going back to Mr Farhadi.
