Skin Cancer and Mole Screening Questions and Answers

Skin cancer screening should be a regular part of your yearly calendar and can be vital to your health. Find out everything you need to know about mole screenings and cancer thanks to the experts at Cadogan Clinic.

How Common is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK, with 75.000 cases reported each year. The main risk factor for skin cancer is increased exposure to ultraviolet radiation – harsh sunlight. There are three main types of skin cancer, melanoma (the most serious, malignant type), squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma and in all three, early detection is essential.

What is Mole Mapping?

The Cadogan Clinic offers a range of skin cancer prevention programs including mole mapping, a technique whereby your moles are catalogued or ‘mapped’. Images are created are used as a sort of ‘skin cancer surveillance program’, with regular comparisons of images used to look for changes in mole sizes and shapes – an early indication of a problem.

Mole screening and mapping provides a full set of 14 to 16 standardised baseline high-resolution medical photographs of the entire skin surface. These identify the location and condition of every mole on the body. Through regular comparisons both you and the doctor can spot changes in existing moles and locate new moles that may develop. This assists in the earlier diagnosis of malignant melanoma – and could even save your life.

Who is Suitable for Mole Screening and Mapping?

Mole mapping is particularly relevant for people with many, diverse moles. Mole mapping and mole screening for cancer is not a diagnostic tool but an assessment tool used to diagnose. You can use these photographs for follow-up appointments to check for any mole changes or new moles that may develop.

How Long Does the Mole Screening and Mapping Procedure Take?

Patients will have a half hour appointment with the consultant for the mole screening and photographs to be taken.

What is Dermascopy?

One of the diagnostic techniques Dr. Bowling will be making use of is dermascopy, where specialised devices (dermatoscopes) are used to illuminate and magnify structures within the skin. These structures would otherwise be invisible to the naked eye and include the blood vessels seen in certain skin and mole cancers. Screenings using dermascopy has been proven to improve accuracy when diagnosing melanoma, allowing earlier detection skin cancers and a reduction in unnecessary skin excisions.

Who is Suitable For Mole Cancer Screening via Dermascopy?

Anyone with concerns about a mole or other skin blemish can now have it seen by a Dermatologist, biopsied and tested, the lab results returned for diagnosis by the Doctor and if necessary treatment started - all within one day. This used to be a process that took an agonising week or more, but now Cadogan Clinic, home to 20 of the world’s top surgeons and clinicians, offers a same-day skin cancer screening service.  Cadogan Clinic houses an on-site laboratory, which enables Doctors to offer this same-day service, instead of sending skin samples away to be tested, which is fraught with inevitable delays and extra worry for patients.
