Exciting young artist to showcase work at Chelsea’s Cadogan Clinic Gallery

2009/12/15 19h49 GMT

A highly regarded young artist, George Butler, is to showcase a range of works of Afghanistan, Azerbaijan and London in the public spaces at Chelsea day hospital, The Cadogan Clinic on Sloane Street from this month.

George Butler, 24, a recent graduate in illustration from Kingston University, has already built up a high quality and in-demand portfolio of reportage work from Azerbaijan, Marrakech, London and New York. In 2006

Butler travelled to Afghanistan at the invitation of the British Army, drawing 16 Brigade and their preparations for war through Kabul, Helmand, Kandahar and Camp Souter. Some of the images from this moving and intense trip are included in the Cadogan Clinic show.

Butler works in pen and ink, producing sparse but engaging works that often centre on people and everyday activities. His work has been seen at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and a number of other galleries and he has completed private commissions for the Royal Exchange and Eton College among others.

On 23rd November George will be heading off on a six month, 8500km trip overland from London to Libreville, Gabon, during which the pictures he produces will be showcased by The Times and on his website, georgebutler.org/inafrica  from January 2010.

George says that most of the works on display at Cadogan Clinic are typical of his reportage style:

“Where the camera can be insensitive and misunderstood, the reporting artist can be subtle and unimposing. It is far easier to learn about your subject (human or landscape) during the period it takes to create the image rather than over the snap of the shutter, and so the reportage illustrator still survives over the snap of the shutter.

“Reportage has to empathise with the situation and at the same time document and describe this environment to the audience.”

The exhibition is the second for the Cadogan Clinic, which opened its doors in early 2008 and has already established its reputation as London’s top cosmetic and medical day hospital, offering a wide range of treatments and procedures from vein treatments and skin cancer testing to liposuction and
cosmetic dermatology. Full details of treatments available can be found at www.cadoganclinic.com

George Butler was invited to exhibit at the clinic after drawing founder surgeon Bryan Mayou’s work treating children with birthmarks.

“I’ve always found George’s style exciting and engaging,” says Bryan Mayou,“so I wanted a chance to share it with visitors, patients and staff. It’s lovely having great visual work on the walls as it helps to make people feel
comfortable and relaxed. I’m looking forward to hearing their response to George’s pictures.”

George’s pictures are on show at Cadogan Clinic, 120 Sloane Street, London SW1X 9BW from November 1st. Visitors are welcome during clinic hours (9am – 6pm) or by appointment on 020 7901 8500. All George’s works are for sale, with prices from £90.
