Essure (Sterilisation)
Female sterilisation is a procedure that has been increasingly popular through NHS, and for the first time, the treatment is being offered privately. This means women can choose to have the quick and painless sterilisation procedure at their convenience, without the need to see their general practitioner or to join an NHS waiting list.
One of our highly skilled consultants at the Cadogan Menopause and Menstrual Clinic, gynaecologist Martin Farrugia, is now offering Essure sterilisation as a “walk in/walk out” procedure. The treatment is a permanent contraceptive solution for women who feel like their families are complete and have made a choice not to have any more children.
The Essure procedure lasts approximately 10 minutes, and it requires no incision or stiches. Because it is minimally invasive, the recommended recovery time is only 45 minutes. After that, female patients can just go home or even return to work. No further recuperation time is needed, and patients experience no post-surgical pain or discomfort.
What Are the Results of the Essure Sterilisation?
During the Essure procedure, soft and flexible micro-inserts are placed into the fallopian tubes using the body’s natural pathways (vagina, cervix and uterus). The inserts contain inner polyethylene terephthalate fibers. Once in place, these fibers induce tissue growth in and around the insert. Within three months, an occlusion or blockage in the fallopian tubes is formed, and this blockage acts as a barrier preventing sperm from reaching the egg.
According to Cadogan consultant gynaecologist Martin Farrugia, is it important that this procedure is now more accessible to women.
