Ian Franklin

Speciality

Mr. Ian Franklin is a vascular surgeon and a leading specialist in vascular and endovascular surgery. He has performed the highest volume of VNUS Closure® procedures in the UK (over 650) and is the Lead UK Trainer for this procedure. Learn more about VNUS Closure® and Mr. Ian Franklin.

Mr. Franklin holds an academic post at the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer and is active in research. He has published numerous scientific papers, book chapters and books. He is a dedicated teacher and trainer within medical school and in post-graduate training programmes.

Due to the inherent complexity of the many vascular disorders, there may be more than one way of managing a particular condition. For this reason, when planning a procedure, Mr. Franklin will discuss all the treatment options in a multidisciplinary team meeting, which includes vascular surgeons, radiologists, neurologists, anaesthetists, cardiologists, vascular technologists and specialist vascular nurses. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that that all perspectives are considered before recommending a course of action to a patient.

For the patient, this means Mr. Ian Franklin will recommend the right treatment and the right sequence of treatments, drawing on a wide repertoire of procedures including:

  • Keyhole treatment of varicose veins.
  • Local anaesthetic treatment of varicose veins.
  • Thread veins treatment (the highest volume of experience in the UK).
  • Carotid surgery (100 procedures).
  • Endovascular surgery.
  • Open aneurysm surgery.

What Mr. Franklin's Patients Say

After surgery, many patients are happy to share their thoughts about their experience under Mr. Franklin’s care. With permission, a short selection of these comments have been reproduced here:

I had confidence in you the first time we met but I never expected to enjoy having an operation, even if minor! The whole procedure was fascinating and what with being hung upside down to watch the 6 o’clock news – highly entertaining. I felt very little discomfort while you did the op, and have had none since. Apart from the extremely unsexy aspect of wearing the surgical stocking, I have to say I am very impressed, and thank you very much indeed for fitting me in. I will see you in 6 weeks, and hopefully wearing some pretty socks!

This morning I received the copy of your progress report on my leg ulcer, which you very kindly sent me. Thank you for this detail, and also thank you so much for the courtesy and consideration you have shown during our meetings. My thanks also to your staff for their kindness and help.

If I may, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for the wonderful job you did on my fathers carotid endarterectomy. We, as a family, were very impressed with the high standard shown by you and your team. I'm very glad that I emailed you that day, I don't believe we could have asked for a better surgeon. Thank you.
